Calling People "Bitter" Means You're An Elitist?

Don't know if this has been discussed here, but all this bullshit about Obama calling small-towners "bitter" is truly ridiculous.

Then to have Hillary and McCain chime in claiming "otherwise" show just how different White America sees things. McCain says it was an eliticst comment. WTF? How is that eliticst? Obama merely mentioned how some voters DO vote based off frustration and bitter towards "The system," especially in the Black community.

Then Hillary's dumb ass creates "I am not bitter" stickers to hand out to her fans. Wow. Get a fucking grip, Hil. It's not that deep - Watch out for that sniper fire though!

Any working class person who isn't at least a little bitter about the current state of affairs hasn't been paying attention. I can imagine that more than a few people did express that to him.

I wouldn't call him elitist. He's smooth on the outside but a total geeky nerd on the inside and it's damn hard for those type of folks not to sound condesending at times. He himself has admitted that he used a poor choice of words. It's not unlike his "typical white person" comment.

Seriously though, when you have to do as much yapping as all three of them have to do on a daily basis I expect any one of them to say something stupid at any given time. The only solution would be to think more and talk less but all of them are desperate to keep their name out there so that's not an option. Besides ya gotta give the talking heads who depend on this stuff for their livelihood something to chew on.

She had those printed already! They've been hinting for days that they had something on Obama that would turn this campaign on it's ear. If this foolishness was the best she could do, her "kitchen sink" so to speak. Obama can start concentrating on McCain now!

I wouldn't say it makes him elitist, but it's definitely not a smart thing to say in a country that's largely made up of small towns.

I come from a small town and small towners have good reason to be bitter. Most politicians could give two shits about what someone outside of a major city wants, needs, or feels. Most of the time the small town folks are exploited by people like Hillary when it's politically expedient, only to have them do nothing once they finally get into office.

Obama is the same old thing dressed up in a different suit. Better than Hillary and McCain, but still the same old thing. confused

Not all small towners are bitter, but I'm saying, they have reason to be if they are. Hell, there are people in the city who are bitter lol All I'm saying is that small towns are usually just used for exploitative "look at me, I'm one of the people" purposes by politicians. They rarely get much play outside of that.

1. I don't understand the reference to blacks in the original post; his comments were referencing small town Pennsylvanians, mostly white.

2. It's not the bitter comment that really needles folks, it's the insinuation that they use religion and guns and old mentalities as crutches -- all true nonetheless.

3. Yes, he does refer to the small towners as bitter angry and clinging to guns and religion, as well as prejudice against people who look unlike them (as a last resort because their government failed them).

Is it elitist? lol ... umm...yeah... But you know what it's truth. And they need to progress to a higher way of thinking. But people have been overwhelmingly allergic to truth this election, which is why Hillary is staying far from it.

I really wish he'd chosen his words differently. But I totally agree with him.

This way of insightful truth-thinking is why Barack does well on college campuses and among highly educated people. But others are too sensitive to hear the truth, whether it's from Wright or Barack, so he really shouldn't say stuff like this.

Highly intelligent people (and small towners don't normally fit this characterization) are probably less likely to 'cling' to crutches like religion and the old Good Ole Boy values.

But it is something you say in private company so as not to offend the clingers. razz

As a political candidate he was foolish to make these comments ... even in all the way in Cali at private affair. I mean, in this digital age, nothing is private when said beyond family and friends.

4. I think most are missing the fact that he wasn't trying to bash. His comments continued because he explained the government needs to improve conditions and opportunities in those small towns so such people can be more progressive.

To suggest that small town folks cling to religion and guns out of bitterness is a totally offensive and sweeping generalization!

It's too bad an individual with a higher education an the intention of attaining the Commander In Chief title of the most awe-inspiring nation is such a fool.

At this point, Hillary will do whatever it takes to win the nomination. She's desperate. It seems to me that some Americans just can't deal with an outspoken candidate like Obama, who basically says, what most people want to say, but are afraid to say it. He's the only candidate that is at least willing to take a risk and do that. It's unfortunate though, that many in this country feels he should tiptoe around the truth rather than expressing his true feelings on issues on in this country. In my opinion, many Americans are more comfortable living with false truths than hearing it stated out in the open. For too long politicians have been stuck doing business as usual, and Hillary's thinking seems to be along those lines as well. She seems to hold back what she really wants to say in fear of losing the nomination. It also seems to me that she is more focused on carrying the title of being "The first female President" moreso than being "The President", but that's just my humble opinion.. shrug

Just to add, Mutha, if McCain was so concerned about the religious values of Americans, then he should have showed up at the Compassion Forum held on CNN last night where they had many religious leaders and residents of many faiths there, so much for "elitism".

what is offensive about it?

It degrades the sanctity of religion, it degrades the virtuousness of those who dedicate their lives to their religion, it degrades the intent in which those disciples practice their religion, it attempts to categorize such a holy institution that is religion, it attempts to neutralize a group of humanity by making a sweeping generalization, it's insulting and irresponsibly deductive and for the truly religious just a plain bald faced lie.

The truth is people practice religion and their constitutional right to bear arms because they believe it is the truth and because they hunt/seek security. Bitterness has nothing to do with it.

The cynical and indifferent know not what they miss. For their mistake is an impediment not only to our progress as a civilization but to their happiness as individuals.

well, ya know pixies, people wouldn't need religion if government did its job. and they wouldn't be have anti-illegal immigrant sentiments, and anti-trade positions (oh how rich!) if only the government would give the people all the things it could with obama holding the reins. why else wouldn't small town PA vote for obama?! he's brilliant and offering so much! i mean damn, isn't it obvious?
