Hey Black folk...Here's an honest question!

The debate about racism is as wide as the space between the Earth and The Sun and in that debate things can get confusing, heated, lost, repeated a thousand times and just plain forgotten.
Racism affects us all and everyone can be a victim of racism as well. My question is not meant to be one-sided or display any hints of 'white guilt' (if there is such a thing?) or its not meant to bash white people as white people can do these days.

So for the sake of clarity (this is only a test run anyway cuz everyone will have their own personal opinions and answers) my question is:

What do you want? What do black people want in 2008 as far as the issue of racism is concerned?

That's a very interesting question, though no 1, 2, or thousand people can reply to it and have it totally inclusive of all requests. Can you imagine an open-ended question like that posed to some people these days? lol

Seriously, speaking for me only, I think that one thing that is wanted is the entire abolishing of racism in EVERY form completely wiped from existence. We both know that will not happen in this lifetime, but it's wishful thinking. Remember that it comes in many forms that other races may never see, even understand, or agree with the disagreement of the treatment. The response I've always heard and still hear is that people are playing the "race card". Well, I can say that Blacks didn't start the game, but are only playing the cards dealt, sometimes having to pull one from up the sleeve just to stay in the game, much less "win" it.

Indeed nod

This is no joke Milty. DeNiro is a dangerous man.

First the regular around the way girls. Now he's got the models.

It won't be long before he gets to Oprah and Tyra and Patti LaBelle.

Me, Maxwell, Tank, and Ginuwine are doing everything we can to fight the forces of Bobby DeNiro, but it just isn't enough.

You have to help us.

psst.... Hate to rain on your thread, Milty, but racism is more than a black versus white issue. Couldn't treating it as such to the exclusion of other races be a form of racism in itself? The problem's not going to be solved if we pretend the only racists are white and the only ones (really) affected by racism are black.

We had a history long before the jerks that took our ancestors from their homeland, and brought them here. Our history didn't start from slavery as some would like us to believe.Just know that it's not what we want in 2008, it's what we have a God-given right to be 365 days a year, to be "Human", and we don't need to ask any other human being's permission to "be" one, but many outside our race need to recognize that. We have always had the right to be afforded as many opportunities as the next human being, because the human being standing before, to the sides or in back of us is no better or less than we are. When you block opportunities that were at one time, only afforded to specific races, then you block someone's hope, dream and future.

I also would like the masses to know that when Black people do not agree about particular situations, and we stand up and fight against any social ills like racism, that we are not "thugs", "gangs" etc., or have some hidden agenda to commit the same atrocities to white people that was done to our ancestors. It seems many get their "ignorant" education from the news media, which is apparent on this forum, especially the same "stereotypical"terms I've seen constantly used here, and outside these forums, that's used in the news media.

We're not asking for anything special or any special treatment
, just to let American citizens know that we too, are Human Beings and always have been.

We know by now the American government has absolutely no intentions of apologizing to us, but we'll leave that to a higher power for them to deal with. We'll be fine. If we survived the "hate" in this country this long, we'll survive anything, because we are a strong people. All the sh*t that my people have gone through haven't killed us yet. What does that tell you? That we are one strong people. I guess we inherited that strength from our ancestors.

And so to answer the thread.....

What I think we all need to be guaranteed is truly equal access to education and employment opportunities, and an eradication of institutionalized inequality, privilege, and racism on all levels.

Issues of class need to be addressed in conjunction with race IMO, but that's veering a little so I'll leave that for now.

Well, I hate to rain on YOUR parade but this particular thread was specifically for the Blacks to answer on what THEY want in 2008, hence the title and the question.

Now, if anyone has an issue with this, please see the "Native American" thread to where this all began. So, people, please stay on topic - "What Blacks want in 2008". Thanks. thumbs up!

Yes the disease is global and affects all groups of people, but it also seems as though there is a push to silence black people regarding this issue.

People will often cite the struggles of various groups racial and not, and promote this "people of color" idea in order to minimize black people and further themselves.

Every person needs to address their needs and they don't have to pull others in or snuff them in order to do so. JMHO

rolleyes

People are being jackasses on both threads, if you ask me. On most threads on race in here, for that matter. It's not all about your race and your experience anymore than it's all about my race and my experience, no matter the topic. Race and racism as experienced by different groups do not exist in voids seperate from each other, and treating the matter as if it did does nothing but put up walls. No one group is going to solve the problem of racism on their own, so as long as we keep pretending the issues are seperate we're just going to end up screwing ourselves.

I don't know if you're under the impression I was among those bitching on the Native thread, but if you care to go back and re-read the thing, you'll see I'm not. So I'd appreciate if you cut this flippant shit out, thanks. thumbs up!

So I'm supposed to pretend racism only affects one group? Or for that matter, that one group has been affected more harshly across the board? Sorry. Can't do that. I'm not trying to silence black people, though I've seen enough examples of others trying to do so to know your assertion's pretty well-founded.

But coming from my perspective, what I see more often than not, here and in the real world, is issues of racism and inequality as it pertains to black people given more attention than anyone else. Even in my mostly black-free city (last stats had the black population at about 300 people) discussions of race largely focus around black people to the exclusion of other racial and ethnic groups that suffer racism and deserve attention for it.
