Tiger Woods noose/lynching commentator/magazine controvery

This may be old news, I don't know. I just heard about it last night and thought it was interesting.

Woods calls 'lynch' comment 'unfortunate,' says the matter is over

Published: January 21, 2008

ANAHEIM, California (AP) — Tiger Woods says Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman meant no harm when she used the term "lynch" during television commentary about him, and he regards the issue closed as he returns to work this week.

"It was unfortunate," Woods said on Monday in his first public comments since Tilghman was suspended for two weeks. "Kelly and I did speak. There was no ill intent. She regrets saying it. In my eyes, it's all said and done."

Toward the end of the second round at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, Tilghman and analyst Nick Faldo were discussing possible challengers to Woods when Faldo suggested the players gang up on Woods.

"Lynch him in a back alley," Tilghman said, laughing.

Woods' agent had issued a statement before Tilghman was suspended, noting Woods and Tilghman were friends and he considered the matter over. Under increasing pressure, however, Golf Channel suspended the anchor for two weeks.

The topic was cranked up a notch last week when Golfweek magazine put a noose on the cover of its Jan. 19 issue, which drew more criticism and an unusually sharp rebuke from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.

Golfweek last week fired Dave Seanor, the editor responsible for the cover.

Woods said he never felt pressure to speak out on the use of "lynch," which stirs graphic reminders of the American South in which 3,466 blacks were lynched from 1882 to 1968.

"It was more media-driven than anything else," Woods said.

I can't decide precisely how I feel about this. I think the comment was very naive and insensitive, and the magazine cover was just sheer stupidity for fanning the flames, but I also see other issues here. Do you think it's at all pertinent that lynching or hanging was common practice for executing people of all ethnicities in great numbers, long before the 19th century? Do we accept that 'lynching' or 'hanging' is just a no-go area now in reference to anybody not deemed white and any intelligent person should be fully aware of that? Is it precisely about that? Would a lynching reference about a white golfer receive this attention? Is it relevant at all that Tiger Woods if pushed considers him Asian more so than African American? Or do these things not matter and what the commentator said is inexcusable? Were the media right to jump on this or did they make it worse? I'd be really interested to have your thoughts.

Ah, I see there's already been a thread (and locked at that lol ) that did touch on this, but that was more about Tiger's ancestry. Can this thread survive, I wonder?

That all depends on the intentions and actions of those that choose to post on it

Yeah, I took a look through the last few pages of the forum (only after I started this thread dunce ) and saw there'd been some trouble. Yesterday I planned to come back to this and say forget about it and have it deleted but we had a power cut.

Shoulda linked it to Vida Guerra's ass in some way anyway. doh!

That's my problem. My number 1 news source is 3 months old Entertainment Tonight. woot!

A p&r photowhore thread. I like it. It's very GD, but people would argue of course. I wonder what they'd argue about. "I disagree with your face"?

If I knew who Ron Paul was I'd be cracking up right now, I just know it! smile

sigh I'll leave the politics and religion to the intellectuals. I know I know a lot about tea and my mommy loves me.

It's only me. I'm dragging DOOM down. lol I'm handy with chopsticks though, can sleep for days even if I've consumed a lot of coffee, know lots of swear words in Thai, and I can eat lemons. It's not like I don't bring anything to the table.
