I love Europe and I love many Europeans, but I couldn't give a fuck what they think about us. We're the most powerful and the most supportive country in the world. And after 9/11 we have an outlook on life that many people will never understand. Maybe when Europe contributes as much to to the world as we do or fights terrorism as much as we do, then maybe I'll consider giving a rats ass what they think.

Good article by the way. It's a disgusting and hypocritical article that illustrates everything that is wrong with the US these days. Europe contributes far more to the world than the US does. And while the US 'fights' against terrorism a lot more, it could be argued that Europe 'wins' against terrorism a lot more. "It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

No, it illustrates the fact that many Europeans are a bunch of judgemental, pompous assholes who talk a lot of shit. Europe contributes far more to the world than the US does. Maybe combined it might seem that way, but no other country in the world gives as much as we do. Ok, i cant resist, for the fun of it, the most ridiculous quotes:
many of the Muslims on your own continent...make one nasty crack about them and you're likely to get six bullets pumped into your head and a knife plunged into your chest
religion should remain at the center of life
One of the best for a Bushie: that the rule of law cannot be set aside when it becomes inconvenient.
We recognize that other people see things differently, and we are tolerant of their views.
the beliefs that powered Western Europe - you - from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance, on to the Enlightenment, and forward into the modern world. They are the beliefs that made Europe itself the glory of Western civilization
Euhm...what is it he wants? Religion at the center of life, or Enlightenment? You have ceased to be a Judeo-Christian culture, and have become instead a secular culture. And a secular culture quickly goes from being "un-religious" to anti-religious. Indeed, your hostility to the basic concepts of Judaism and Christianity has literally been written into your new European Union constitution, despite the Pope's heroic efforts to the contrary.
"Your rate of marriage is at an all-time low, and the number of abortions in Europe is at an all-time high. Indeed, your birth rates are so far below replacement levels that in 30 years or so there will be 70 million fewer Europeans alive than are alive today. Europe is literally dying. And of the children you do manage to produce, all too few will be raised in stable, two-parent households.
Oh common, some random numbers: Divorce rates (1999, per 1000): Europe: 2 US: 4 Teen pregnancies (per 1000) Europe: <20 US: 48 Abortion rates (number of abortion per woman): Europe: 0.5 US: 0.69 Incarceration rate (per 100K): Europe: 60 US: 666 Homicide rate (per 100K): Europe: 2.5 US: 8.2 "Your economy is stagnant because your government regulators make it just about impossible for your entrepreneurs to succeed - except by fleeing to the United States, where we welcome them and celebrate their success.
yeah, your economy is doing just great lately. Not to mention Europe's social security and general well-being index beats that of the US "And your armed forces are a joke. With the notable exception of Great Britain, you no longer have the military strength to defend yourselves. Alas, you no longer have the will to defend yourselves.
American military has been pretty funny themselves, from Iraq to their Star Wars failures. "It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

"Forgive me for being so blunt, but your reaction to our reelection of President Bush has been so outrageous that I'm wondering if you have quite literally lost your minds. One of Britain's largest newspapers ran a headline asking "How Can 59 Million Americans Be So Dumb?", and commentators in France all seemed to use the same word - bizarre -- to explain the election's outcome to their readers. In Germany the editors of Die Tageszeitung responded to our vote by writing that "Bush belongs at a war tribunal - not in the White House." And on a London radio talk show last week one Jeremy Hardy described our President and those of us who voted for him as "stupid, crazy, ignorant, bellicose Christian fundamentalists." "Of course, you are entitled to whatever views about us that you care to hold. (And lucky for you we Americans aren't like so many of the Muslims on your own continent; as the late Dutch film maker Theo van Gogh just discovered, make one nasty crack about them and you're likely to get six bullets pumped into your head and a knife plunged into your chest). We recognize that other people see things differently, and we are tolerant of their views. But we believe that our country is worth defending, and if anyone decides that killing us is an okay thing to do we will go after them with everything we've got. "If these beliefs seem strange to you, they shouldn't. For these are precisely the beliefs that powered Western Europe—you—from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance, on to the Enlightenment, and forward into the modern world. They are the beliefs that made Europe itself the glory of Western civilization and - not coincidentally - ignited the greatest outpouring of art, literature, music and scientific discovery the world has ever known including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Shakespeare, Bach, Isaac Newton and Descartes. "It is your abandonment of these beliefs that has created the gap between Europe and the United States. You have ceased to be a Judeo-Christian culture, and have become instead a secular culture. It's worrisome because, to tell you the truth, we need each other. Western Civilization today is under siege, from radical Islam on the outside and from our own selfish hedonism within. It's going to take all of our effort, our talent, our creativity and, above all, our will to pull through. So take a good, hard look at yourselves and see what your own future will be if you don't change course. And please, stop sneering at America long enough to understand it. After all, Western Civilization was your gift to us, and you ought to be proud of what we Americans have made of it." Speaking as a Brit, I think this article makes quite a few fair and valid points. Divorce rated and abortion rates are way higher in the US. I agree the baby-boom generation dying will be a problem in Europe, but that will also be the case in the US. So whatever problems Europeans have, Americans have it also, or worse. Hardly a reason to put us down. "Your economy is stagnant because your government regulators make it just about impossible for your entrepreneurs to succeed - except by fleeing to the United States, where we welcome them and celebrate their success.
This is true. It's only part of the story though. Europeans value other things over economic growth: better social security, less working hours, less poverty, ... And compared to the US economy in recent years, we aren't doing that bad. But i'll admit there is room for improvement. "And your armed forces are a joke. With the notable exception of Great Britain, you no longer have the military strength to defend yourselves. Alas, you no longer have the will to defend yourselves".
What is it? The will or the strength? We are bringing democracy to many eastern-European countries. Turkey is changing radically to become part of the European Union. We resolved our internal differences from the last century. We fought in Afghanistan alongside the US against the Taliban after 9/11. I think we're doing just fine. You are bringing democracy to many eastern-european contries are the US did. Who defeated the Soviet Union in the cold war? Wasn't it the US? And didn't that open the door for all this reform? If the Soviet Union was still around there would be no hope for democracy in these easter-euorpean contries, right or wrong? "Always blessings, never losses......"

Now who is blowing smoke out of their ass????? It's not any particualar generation dying out, it's birth rates that determine population. And you can find no proof anywhere that the US birth rates are going down or are below US death rates. "Always blessings, never losses......"

Are you sure you are not American!? The article became a joke to me when the writer hoped to play on the typical ignorance of the general American public. 25 of top 30 universities in the world!?!?! 5 of the six best symphonies!?! As for the wine!?!?!?!?!?!?! Anyone want to argue!?!?!?! It goes on. But the best bit? We should be grateful for what the US has done with "western civilisation (which they spelt wrong)? Tell that to the larger world. Its just the usual story. The Americans can't take critisism. This writer simply tried to puff up the chest of his readers and get them to agreee with his article throught simple ignorant patriotism. Funny thing is, it works wonders. . | |
