Captain Marvel

Given that the movie is not out yet and I personally feel that people who give away spoilers for movies are among the worst scum of the earth, I'll avoid any spoilers for now.

Captain Marvel is a good movie. Going in, I had no idea what to expect because I don't know the character and, for some reason, haven't been following the marketing for it. Like, I never even bothered watching the trailer. Which is unlike me. Especially for a "big event" movie like a Marvel movie. But I think that's actually worked to my advantage here because without any preconceived notions of whether I was going to like it or not, I was able to go in fresh. And like I said, it is pretty good. In fact, there's nothing that I can point to and criticise. Brie Larson is on form despite the internet's criticism of her in the trailers, the action is well done, Samuel L Jackson is Samuel L Jackson, which is always a treat. Which brings me to my number one positive about the movie. Seeing as the movie takes place in the 90s, they've used the de-aging CG technique they love so much to make Samuel L Jackson look 25 years younger. Now, this is something they've used in these movies before with Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr and Kurt Russell all appearing far younger than their years. And I've always thought it looked pretty good. And it's only gotten better with each movie. And now, with Sam Jackson, it's fucking perfect. So perfect that we were halfway through the movie before I realised that the man in his mid 40s on the screen is actually being played by a 70 year old. It didn't even occur to me that his face was CG. And that is special effects done right.

HOWEVER, despite my finding it difficult to find fault with the movie, it's not going to appeal to anyone who doesn't already like the other MCU movies. If you don't like Civil War, Winter Soldier or Infinity War, you won't like this.

Post Credits.

There are two post credits scenes. The first one, which technically comes during the credits, is worth staying for. Especially if you plan to see a certain other MCU movie which releases next month. The second scene, which comes after the credits, is kind of pointless. So if you leave after the first post credits scene, you won't have missed anything important.

Overall, I'd give it a solid 3 and a half out of 5. Some great special effects, good action, decent humour and no obvious flaws but probably ranks about midway in the whole MCU leaderboard.

Welp, I'll love. Not going to see any of the trailers if i can help it. This should be fun.

Hey. I won't tolerate any badmouthing of Michael Douglas. The man is a god should be revered as such.

I hope I never hear his voice again. It's actually painful to listen to and that makes me sad, because I think he's a good actor.

i'm very much looking forward to this too. if i remember correctly, you were a big fan of lowery's a ghost story, which is one of my favourite films of the century so far for sure.

funnily enough, i was re-watching upstream color earlier this week & noticed that lowery edited that film with shane caruth. it almost made me wonder if lowery was the secret weapon that made upstream color so hypnotic. while i liked caruth's earlier film primer, i think upstream color was a big step up in quality. it's almost like the cinematic equivalent of brian eno's music for airports. 4/5 for upstream color.

mind game (2004) 4/5 a hopeless failure has a trippy adventure when he meets a member of the japanese mafia while trying to win over his old high school crush. wonderfully trippy animated film that would have been perfect in my eyes if its momentum hadn't slightly stalled somewhere around the 55 minute mark & if it had been just a little bit sleazier. still, it's a terrific mind bending exercise that is also very visually exciting & dynamic, moving from photo-realistic to almost amateurishly crude at times. a great surprise & a really terrific & unexpected find.

Captain Marvel- a very generous 5/10

I went into this movie with a bit of appreciation because the trailers were so bad, but i tried to have an open mind.
It doesn’t feel like a Marvel movie. At first I had to ask myself why it looked so cheap and who the heck was responsible for the atrocious score. I actually couldn’t wait to see the end credits just to see who was responsible for the lamest music in a movie that stood out so much for all the wrong reasons. The name is Pinar Toprak. Never heard of him.

After a while I figured out why the movie looked so cheap and why they had to hire the absolute worst composer to do the score of a major motion picture. Samuel L Jackson. I’m sure he costs a pretty penny by himself, but it must have cost a fortune for all that CGI they put in his face. That’s where all the money went.

But the main fault has to go to the directors. It just looks amateurish from start to finish. Brie Larson was also terrible as the captain. Samuel L Jackson and his CGI face was the glue that kept this mess together. He has the charm that has been able to hold Marvel movies together. A charm that Brie Larson just doesn’t have.

I honestly don’t know Marvel with all their resources could let something like this be released. It’s pretty bad for a marvel film.

I like how you speak as if your opinion is fact. "How could Marvel let something like this be released?". Given that the vast majority of reviews have been positive, much more positive than my own review, it must be said, I think it's clear how Marvel could allow it to be released.

Oh, and Pinar Toprak is a woman by the way. She worked on the Justice League with Danny Elfman as well as the Krypton TV series.

Pretty good movie but suffers from coming out a couple of years prior to Jackie Chan exploding in popularity and changing the genre forever. My Young Auntie is typical Shaw Brothers stuff. Watched through modern eyes, it's very old fashioned in just about every sense of the word.

Bit of trivia, the director, Lau Kar-Leung went on to direct Drunken Master 2 with Jackie Chan, which is a genuine classic of the genre.

Extra bonus bit of trivia, the director's brother, Lau Kar-Wing, appears in several "Three Brothers" movies and even directed the Sammo Hung movie Skinny Tiger Fatty Dragon. If you're in any way interested in top class martial arts movies, then check out some of the Three Brothers movies. My Lucky Stars is probably the best but they're all great.

I clicked on a few reviews on my feed, and most felt basically the way I did. Some were walking on eggshells trying not to sound misogynistic about not liking it because of current culture things going on, but for me a good movie is a good movie and a bad movie is a bad movie. I wanted to be pleasantly surprised, but sadly that wasn’t the case.

yeah, 'a ghost story' is one of the best pieces of american cinema in a long time. bonnie prince billy's soliloquy midway through interrupted my thrall a bit, but it wouldn't be the same movie without it. i haven't seen 'pete's dragon', but the fact that robert redford wanted to work with lowery again after making it bodes well...i might check that out. i look forward to anything from david lowery from this point forward.

i hadn't heard of 'upstream color' or shane caruth, but i'm intrigued after looking them up...

anyhow, the current count is 1025 library patrons get to enjoy 'the old man and the gun' before me.

as far as the last movie i watched....

'black panther'...meh. i mean, it was good, but it wasn't all that. one of the better marvel movies i've seen; but they really aren't my favorite types of movie, anyhow. seemed kinda fast and loose to me.

3.5/5

'highlander'. rewatched after many years while cleaning records the other afternoon. i'd forgotten, or never realized in my youth, how great this movie is. independent of the sequels or tv series, this movie really gets your imaginative juices flowing. maybe a little low-budget, but they did a pretty good job with this one.

Do you like all the movies you post to the same degree? There's nothing wrong with others letting the org know they were disappointed in a film. I find that helpful if I planned on seeing the same movie.

And trolling would be posting movies in a "rate the last movie you watched" thread and refusing to rate any of them.

Maggie's performance was to her usual excellence. The story is haunting. The last line, "I have a poem, I have a poem" was so visceral as the boy is being attended to as the victim of a kidnap and the audience knows under the circumstances of the child's environment, his gift may never come to fruition.

What's the best viewing experience to see Captain Marvel in?

I would assume Dolby, but that gets a little too comfortable and I'm going tonight so I don't wanna risk falling asleep, so there's IMAX, Real 3D or just regular movie.

Captain Marvel (2019) A kick ass film, with a great soundtack and cast, especially Annette Benning as Dr Wendy Lawson/Supreme Intelligence worship and "Goose" The Cat cat who steals the film. There is a nice tribute to Stan Lee RIP touched and watch out for the the mid and end credit scenes. I give it a 4 out of 5 popcorn

Captain Marvel 3.3/5 I liked it, a good origin story that held my attention throughout, i don't feel it was given as much muscle or wow factor as the other movies, it felt very much like a piece to an even bigger puzzle not a stand alone movie. Did the 3D, definitely noticed it thru the entire movie which is rare for me which caused my dilemma, a bit distracting in the beginning, they seemed so tiny like I was watching antman, then felt larger than life at the end. I wonder if that was intended or just an effect of the 3D. Loved the Stan Lee tribute in the opening much applause in the theater and the cameo, her acknowledging smile was a nice personal touch.

Another nice touch regarding that Stan Lee cameo was that he was rehearsing his lines for Mallrats, which came out the year this movie is set.

His Girl Friday (1940) a perfect 10/10

This movie has aged so well. The comedy, situations, politics, even some of the fashion are timeless.

How they made a smart and funny movie about the media and politics and gender relations so much fun is beyond me.
Last year I went back and watched a lot of older Hitchcock movies and boy did they age badly, but this version Directed by Howard Hawks with the amazing Rosalind Russell and Carey Grant simply genius.

Modern movie directors and writers can learn a lot about film making from just this one movie.

It's streaming on Amazon Prime Video right now and with so many bad movies being released, (Captain Marvel) instead of wasting money on amateurish "new" movies, just stay home and stream a really good one at home. This is one of my favorite films of all time.

This was on Showtime last night so I deccided to watch again.

Whoa... it was particularly relevent in lieu of the current fuss circulating about 'Leaving Neverland' and the continuing woes of the Catholic Chruch with regard to the seemingly never-ending string of abusive priests.

I love movies about investigative journalism - for me, this ranks up there with "All The President's Men" and "The Insider" "Good Night and Good Luck," among others.
