Mother F@%*! Record cold temperatures heading my way.

I am definitely chilling where I live. The temperature barely rose above zero in northern Illinois today and is expected to drop to 25 degrees below zero tonight, rise all the way to -16 degrees to tomorrow, and drop to near 30 degrees below zero before rising to just below zero by Thursday afternoon and rising to a balmy mid-teens above zero by Friday. I'm stuck in a drafty old apartment building, and while I have been cranking up the heat and weatherproofing my windows, my floor is ice cold. I had to wear two pairs of socks and my winter boots to keep my feet warm. omfg

Ironically, if I can make it through the next few days, it's supposed to rise above freezing by the weekend.

C'mon Spring!!

I have to laugh at my city (Kansas City) it's only going to get to like 5 below tomorrow and they've cancelled schools, and the MAIL.

You guys in MN are supposed to be what 50 below? Now that I could understand cancellations.

Temperatures sink to minus-40, wind chills to minus-65 in Midwest

The coldest air in at least 25 years is pouring into the Midwest on Wednesday, promising to topple records and prompting officials to warn of “life-threatening” temperatures.

Park Rapids, Minn., is the coldest location in the Lower 48 so far Wednesday, after temperatures dropped to minus-42 degrees for three hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., Central Time. The wind chill wavered between minus-64 and 65 during that period with a 7 to 8 mph wind out of the northwest.

-40ºF - That's crazy. So crazy, it's the same in ºC.

What do people do in temps like that? What temp does gas freeze at? Does a car even start?

Go to the gym, I guess. The temp was -7 below zero when I went to the gym this evening and the place was packed!

One of our local forcasters talked about this yesterday. He said the temperatue would have to be -200 below zero F for it to be too cold to snow. And that hasn't happened yet. biggrin

I hear some regions will be getting a 70 to 100 degree shift in a couple of days. Passing the frozen baton to other regions.

I live in DC and thought last night was tough...but then I heard about Chicago. It's negative 25 there. And soon they'll see more than 70 degrees of temperature change when this cold-quake is over. Climate's just absolutely f-ed up. Feel terrible about the homeless.

It dropped to -31 degrees in my hometown of Rockford, Illinois which is about 75 miles northwest of Chicago. That's an all-time record low. I'm still freezing in my apartment, yet the temperature is supposed to rise overnight and be in the upper teens above zero tomorrow. We're supposed to be in the mid 30's on Saturday, but it may rain, and that could cause the streets to ice over due to the record cold air.

After working at home on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because of the weather (snow and frigid temperatures/windchills), I was totally stir crazy yesterday morning. So I got in my car around 9:00 (thinking I'd make my 10:00 meeting) and headed for the office. About 5 miles from home (the office is 40 miles away through open country), I hit freezing fog and the temperature on my car thermometer dropped to -33º F. I said to myself, "This is one of the dumbest and most dangerous things you've ever done. Go home."

About five minutes after I got back home, BOTH of the meetings I had yesterday were cancelled. And one of my co-workers who made it in yesterday took an hour-and-a-half to get home last night because it started snowing again and ice melt doesn't work in subzero temperatures.

It's been absolutely nuts.

Cool freakin' room smile. Doesn't look nearly as cold as it was outside. My hound lasted no more than two minutes out there. 'Twas brutally dangerous...gonna be 50 out by Monday? What tha?!!

I made sloppy joes.

OMG, guys. The freezing temps was not the worst part for me. This is my kitchen flood Friday afternoon when the valve on the hot water burst off under the sink during the thaw.

It was scalding hot and made the fog. I called the fire department, and they came to turn it off. Everyone is okay. It burst about an hour after I got home late that afternoon, and I sudder when I think it could have burst just after I left home that morning. It would have been flooding for hours. eek
