The LAST Org Fitness Thread of 2018!

JUST LESS THAN THIRTY DAYS UNTIL THIS YEAR IS OVER.

DO IT NOW.

*************************************************************************

Yes, do it now! Work out, exercise, eat right. Do it for the next three weeks and then EAT YOUR HEART OUT FOR THE LAST WEEK OF THE YEAR!

That's my plan, anyway.

*************************************************************************

Even though there has been no Org Fitness Thread to inspire me these last 60 days, I've been hitting it pretty hard. I hope you have, too.

How has this year worked out for you, fitness-wise?

I've had a cracking 2018. I've lost 46 pounds in weight and started allsorts of fitness stuff that I never thought I'd be doing. Sadly I didn't get a place in next year's London Marathon but the fact I even entered is something. Gives me an extra year to train for 2020 too biggrin

I'd like to join a gym (but definitely not in Jan) and join a yoga class. Watch this space in 2019. And thanks Rodeo, the fitness threads have been an inspiration to me.

Let hte one and only ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER inspire you!

https://www.cnn.com/2018/...index.html

(CNN)More than 50 years ago, I lifted my first Mr. Universe trophy on the stage of the Victoria Palace Theater in London, and I have been on a fitness crusade ever since.

But lifting trophies was never enough for me -- I wanted to lift the entire fitness industry, and inspire people all over the world to learn and embrace the benefits of training with weights, eating well and living a healthy lifestyle.

Today, we all know those benefits. But 50 years ago, it was an uphill battle. Gyms were scarce, and the ones that existed were often inhospitable dungeons. Doctors warned against lifting weights, telling people it was bad for their health. I knew some movie stars who had discovered the benefits of building their bodies lied and said they were naturally muscular. Even some professional athletes avoided the gym, because of myths that lifting weights would make them musclebound and less mobile.

We have come a long way -- more than 60 million Americans are members of health clubs, according to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, and there are almost as many gyms as there are grocery stores in our country, according to FoodIndustry.com. I love that there are now more accessible places to exercise, whether it's a boxing gym or yoga studio.

But we can do so much more. Despite the constantly rising interest in health and wellness, we are plagued by an obesity epidemic; 67% of gym members never actually visit their gym, according to USA Today; and 80% of us will fail our New Year's resolutions by February, according to US News and World Report.

We have more information available, more health products on the market, and more gyms than ever before, so why aren't we healthier and fitter than ever before?

As someone who has been involved in the fitness industry for five decades, I've spent a lot of time trying to answer that question, and I've only come up with one answer. The current health and wellness industry is failing us.

Hard work and sound science has been replaced by fads, false promises, and magic pills.
When you're promised something like "rock hard abs in 28 days," told one special tea is all you need to lose those last 10 pounds or bombarded with flashy advertisements passed off as legitimate information, it's easy to see why so many people just throw up their hands and give up.

It's time for the fitness industry to be honest with people. A healthier, fitter America starts with you. There is no gimmick. There is no shortcut. There is no magic pill. Everyone's fitness journey will be unique, but a healthy lifestyle takes commitment, patience and motivation.
I can already hear you saying, "Easy for you to say, Arnold. Fitness has always been your life and you've always been in top shape."

But I had to work my way back from the bottom this year, and I learned a lot along the way. After I underwent open-heart surgery this spring, I had to use a walker. I had to do breathing exercises five times a day to retrain my lungs. I was frustrated and angry, and in my worst moments, I couldn't see the way back to my old self.

How Ruth Bader Ginsburg stays in shape

How Ruth Bader Ginsburg stays in shape 01:07

Three months later, I returned to a film set to star in a new Terminator movie, and you probably know that there is no such thing as a weak Terminator. I'd love to tell you it was because of a certain product or workout or diet, but it wasn't. I just kept walking. I kept breathing. I kept trying. I was lucky; I had a huge team around me supporting me the whole way. Eventually, I got into the gym and went through the motions without weights at first. I upgraded from walks around my backyard to bike rides. I didn't worry about six-packs or bench pressing 500 pounds. My only goal was improving a little bit every single day, and eventually, all of those small improvements and all of that support brought me back to a strong, healthy place.

Going through that process showed me that many people put too much faith in big moments, believing they'll suddenly flip a switch and be healthier. There's no such thing. A healthier future is every tiny step we take, or every little rep, that ultimately leads us to our goal. We all think we can do it alone, but no one does anything alone. As I always say, no one is self-made. We all need support -- even Terminators.
|
So here's my challenge to you: Don't wait for New Year's Resolutions. Don't wait for your own heart surgery or emergency. Start right now. And ask a friend to join you.

I'm not asking you to reject all the delicious food you'll see this holiday season, because I would never do that either. I'm simply asking you to be better tomorrow than you were today, every day, and to inspire someone you care about to join you. It's a simple resolution and it's not as sexy as having a six-pack, but it's the key to fulfilling the unfulfilled promise of our fitness crusade and repairing this broken industry.

Don't chase the next big thing. Be better. Today. That's all. If you and your training partner walked 5,000 steps yesterday, walk 5,001 today. If you ate one vegetable yesterday, eat two tomorrow. If you did a pushup for the first time today, do two tomorrow, PurpleJedi!

For more opinion...

Join us on Twitter and Facebook

If you can join me in celebrating the small wins and supporting each other, we'll create a healthier America, and our fitness crusade will be a success. And in January, when everybody else is scrambling, we'll already be well on our way.

Let's do this. Be better together. Today.

For some reason known only to God, I decided to walk the stairs just now.

Our building is 18 stories. The first floor is actually 1.5 stories/has three stair segments, so walking from the bottom to the top is technically 17.5 stories.

It went the same way it's always gone:

FLOOR 1 - 2: This is easy but remember - slow and steady or you'll hit a wall

FLOOR 3 - This feels good, especially on my knees

FLOOR 4 - I climbed slowly but hit a wall anyway

FLOOR 5 - WHY DID I DO THIS WEARING MY DRESS SHOES?!?

FLOOR 6 - ??? - I don't know what floor I'm on. My head is hanging and I can't lift it. But at least i'm still going up

FLOOR ??? - ??? - My chest, shoulders and biceps are incredibly pumped. I don't know why. i'm not moving any of those body parts. Must be from all the air I'm huffing and puffing

FLOOR 10 - Hey, I'm at floor 10! I'm more than halfway to the top! I think I'll make it!

FLOOR 12 - They STILL haven't cleaned whatever it was that someone spilled here? Man, I hope that wasn't blood

FLOOR 15 - I forgot to look at floors 13 and 14 because I was thinking about blood. But look! Floor 15! My floor is the next floor!

FLOOR 16 - My floor, but I'm not stopping! To the top we go! Only 2 more floors!

FLOOR 17 - Man, I hope that dude who sometimes smokes on the landing on floor 18 isn't there anymore. I felt bad about ratting him out to his employer, but not THAT bad

FLOOR 17.5 - I wonder if he ever found out it was me that ratted him out? I am totally screwed if he did, because I can't lift a finger. Even a smoker might be able to take me right now

FLOOR 17.6275 - Nope. No WAY a smoker will EVER be able to take me. Bring it on, I'm ready!

FLOOR 17.75 - I don't smell smoke or hear anything, but it could be that all my senses have left me. Except for pain. I still feel pain

FLOOR 18 - I did it! Even better, I remembered to hit my stopwatch! A time of 6:17! I can't remember if that's good or not but who cares? I made it to the top!

HALLWAY - Heck YES I am taking the elevator down two floors to my office. I am DONE with stairs

FLOOR 16 - The office was very relieved to see me, as I was one minute away from the self-appointed time at which i'd told them to send out a search party if I hadn't made it back

For some reason I don't fully understand, whilst all my family were out, and after I'd eaten far too much at work, I decided to take up Rodeo's 18 floor challenge.

Now, my place of work only has two floors, and I'm mainly based on the ground one, so this was one for when I got home. My house has a standard 13 steps and I had to go down before I could come up again. Here's how it went:

FLOORS 0-1 (after 3 times) This is easy, gosh Rodeo I'm going to smash your time, I'm so fit.

FLOORS 0-1 (after 7 times) My legs are burning, my lungs are hurting, I've never smoked but you'd think I had. My Great Dane is looking at me like I've gone mad.

FLOORS 0-1 (after 12 times) Okay, I'm admitting it, I'm walking now....and slowly! The dog is trying to join me (but he's not allowed upstairs, he knows that).

FLOORS 0-1 (after 14 times) You know what? I can do this! And I can still smash Rodeo's time, hurry up, hurry up.

FLOORS 0-1 (after 17 times) I'm going to die if this doesn't end soon

FLOORS 0-1 (after 18 times) I've done it!!!!! Yeahhh!!!!! Whoop Whoop...wait, I forgot to look at the clock, and I haven't counted how many stairs we have.

Afterwards - I still reckon I smashed Rodeo's time and did it in about five mins, but then I had a breather doing downstairs after each climb, and there may well have been less stairs to climb, plus I was not in dress shoes (I was just in my socks). But Rodeo, I'm really glad I did it. I might even be tempted to do it again...it definitely gave my lungs a workout. Thanks for the motivation.

Today is the birthday of Arnold Schwarzenegger's daughter, Katherine. The first reply on his Facebook post of this event was by a guy who posted: "Remember that time she got kidnapped and you just went nuts and killed a bunch of guys? Good times."

falloff I had to laugh!

Arnold has many many MANY great lines but this one was the first and maybe my favorite. I know I've used "bad advices" more than any of the others!

.Sorry. Every single dang YouTube video I've posted lately has been un-embeddable.

Okay, you've inspired me. I usually do 10 flights a day--not all in one shot. I can usually do 4 without having to take a break, but I'm going to start upping my stair count to 15/day and do 5 at a time. I notice my lungs could use some more capacity.

Still doing to 15K steps and/or hooping per day. Noticing the weight going up because....well it's the holidays! Hovering between 118-122. Want to dial it back to 114-117. For now, keep up the physical, eat just a little of what I crave. Not anorexic....just 5'1".

I forgot!

I did the stairs again last week - probably on Thursday the 20th - and BLASTED my old time.

5:16:01

You know what? IT HURT. You know what else?

I tried to Google Image that time and find some giant 1026 x 720 image to dazzle y'all with. But........how do you Google numbers?!? I tried every which way, including "5:16:01 digital display" etc etc etc but I never got any numbers.

When I just googled "5:16:01" I got nothing but results that centered around hip-hop. I guess there's a song or album with some of those numbers.

Anyway.......

5:16:01!

Today I woke up sick. Actually, I went to bed last night feeling poorly. Lots of sinus drainage, and that stiff feeling all over my body. No fever though, so I was hoping this was a short-term deal.

Long story short, it was. After a nap this morning, I felt almost normal. Normal enough to see if I could break the 5:00 mark on that 18-story climb!

My mathematical mind figured that all I needed to do was gain 1 second per flight and I'd get to the top in just under five minutes. So, of course, I tried to make up all that time in the first four floors.

GIANT mistake.

Oh, I made up the time - I'm sure of that. But I gave it right back because after four floors, I hit a wall. It HURT. For the first time, I had to pull myself up the stairs using the hand rails. IT. WAS. AGONY.

But I made it to the top. No way was I going to quit! My time?

5:16:05.

Ouch.

have you tried it yet? and how do you find it? the calves trainer is a neat idea, no more loose plates cool

but how do you find the elevation board for squats? i guess it's so you can go further back without
feeling like you're going to fall back? i've never seen these before but i'd like to get one, too, if you
are positive about it.
