Gladiator sequel actually being made.

While he has been eyeing other projects that include a coming of age Merlin movie at Disney, Ridley Scott has begun forward progress on a sequel to Gladiator, the 2000 film which garnered 11 Oscar nominations and five wins including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe. While Crowe’s Maximus character met his end in the classic original film, Gladiator 2 will follow the continuing story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), The youth was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the weaselly son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father seized the throne and wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus, who though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young Lucius.

Hollywood should leave done things were they belong, and try to find new ideas.
Why couldn't they just give it a different name instead of cheaply hoping for the millions by naming it 'xxx 2' while all original actors are passed their expiry date and this will have close to nothing to do with the original gladiator?

I agree. They could name it something else and put Gladiator in the tagline. Just to relate it but not name it, literally, Gladiator 2. It feels cheap. Just have it be in the same universe, the way Conjuring and Annabelle are, or Split, Glass, etc.

But it's almost 20 years old, and the lead character died. What's to sequel?

I think Gladiator was overrated and just a OK movie.

Years ago Russel Crowe had approved of Nick Cave's Galdiator 2 screenplay and he really wanted to do that one where he woke up in the afterlife and fighting Gods and eventually becoming the God of War who had a hand in all wars on earth. Pretty great idea.

The Son of the Gladiator maybe?

And I advise everyone who is interested in the subject to read the works of ancient historian Herodianus. The true story of the life and death of Commodus is much more interesting than the movie.

The movie was beautifully shot but it doesn't age as well.

There were a batch of movies released that year that arguably hold up better nearly 20 years later, especially Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which was the one I most wanted to see a sequel or even prequel to.

I'd go on a summer matinee tho.

Well I guess we can't complain too bad. They're doing a Breaking Bad movie, I'm like "about what, Heiseinberg is dead?" I don't think they heard me though. It's a big secret if Cranston is in it.

There is a sequel of it called Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny.

I read it's about Jesse and some other characters who's story wasn't neatly finished.
And whoknows if Heisenberg is really dead, maybe he just got caught.

True, but I don't really count it for purposes of this conversation because Ang Lee didn't direct it.

Have you seen it? How is it?

No I haven't seen it and probably won't because I wasn't that impressed with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

well that would kind of ruin the weight of the conclusion of the original movie.

If he's not dead, that's squeezing some serious mileage out of that storyline.

I enjoyed Gladiator, though it did require me to pretend I didn’t know anything about Roman history. I expect any sequel will be the same.
