Can’t sleep - any ideas?

Hi Org,

I can’t sleep. Husband asleep next to me. Can’t get out of bed as would wake him up. Driving myself insane.

Does anyone have any ideas?? How can I switch my mind off as I am
Supposing that’s what’s keeping me awake.

I went out this afternoon with a friend had 5 alcoholic beverages (cider, mulled wine, gin and tonic x2, Vodka) so mixed my drinks but drank them pretty far apart and did a lot of walking etc inbetween (consumed over 7/8 hours) but had some food and walked loads so am imagining it’s not this?

I went to sleep pretty quick then woke up as my husband hadn’t turned off the light. Ever since my mind has been racing and I’ve felt panic over things which are not things to panic about, almost irrational. I get this occasionally nothing to do with drink but perhaps it doesn’t help.

I guess my questions are

1) what tips does anyone have for getting to sleep when you can’t get out of bed

2) what tips does anyone have to stop your mind going into overdrive over mainly irrational things

Anything would help, no matter how small

I picked up my phone in the end as I began to creep myself out and wanted to see a little normality! Normally phone screens are the worst to sleep but feel at this point nothing else is helping.

I read before that it takes a different side of your brain to do math than to worry...so counting is beneficial (like the old answer to count sheep)...but not mindless counting, you have to think about it. When I can't sleep I count backwards from 100 by 3's a few times & next thing I know I'm out like a light. Hope this helps! 💜

Hate to say it, but alcohol will affect sleep quality. You may fall asleep quickly but will can awaken after several hours and may have difficulty returning to sleep...even if the alcohol was imbibed during the day.

I love beer and wine bit always ask myself, "do I want a good night's sleep?"

Yea, separate beds. And new house rules. Trapped in bed? I don't think so.

Sounds like you MAY have anxiety. U know alcohol often escalates that right? And lack of sleep will too. In fact insomnia is one of the most common signs of the beginning stage of various mental disorders...
However i recommend trying Everything u can before taking pills to sleep. For me morning spin class Really helped. Many ppl work out for their physical health but I do it for my mental health - reduce stress n quality sleep.

I have no trouble falling asleep. I just can't stay asleep. I wake up every half hour. I get an average of 2 or 3 hours sleep per night. So I'm probably not the best person to give advice but like I said, I have no problem actually getting to sleep. I normally end each day by listening to music (with my earphones). I'm out within a few minutes. If I'm feeling unwell and that doesn't work, my fiancé massages my forehead, just above the eyebrows, and that works every single time. Sometimes it means having to wake him up but he finds that preferable to having to deal with me the next day if I'm in a bad mood.

Deep breathing always helps me as does counting. Sounds crazy, but it can stop you from thinking about all other sorts of things. Alcohol doesn't help, it's actually a stimulant. Try Melatonin or other non-addictive sleep aids. Also, try separate beds. It works and you can always meeting up for the sexy stuff before actually going to bed.

I wanted to say thank you so much for replying

I have never in my life suffered insomnia and i like my husband had a huge day ahead. I figured the .org over google as there’s so much noise out there and I’d much rather hear from a real person. Especially as our timelines differ so much.

So I got to sleep- found myself in the chat room with willow and heymistermusic and they were fab! Willow gave me a little advice I want to share - if you relax every part of your body toe to head one by one it really helps and it did!

Rjp1205- there was something in this! I counted back in threes and it really took my mind off my racing thoughts!

Peggyon- I tend to think this is right and im going to drink less in future as this is exactly what happened! I never made the connection.

Pliablypurple- I was trapped as if I woke him he wouldn’t have gone back to sleep and he wakes when I get up. He had a big day at work and an early start so going elsewhere wasn’t an option. Separate beds is not a bad call though if this continues.

Happinessinitsuncutform - I have never suffered with anxiety but was absolutely last night. I was awfully anxious for no reason. I am going to go for s jog later to see if it helps. Also it’s interesting two people thought it was the drink, certainly cutting down as I felt really quite scared last night for no reason.

Luv4u- your initial suggestion was brilliant but wasn’t to be. Your second for sure tied in with the counting suggestion. I didn’t count sheep but backwards in threes. Obviously that’s the science behind it!

Lastly emmamcg- how do you cope?? I hope the above might be if use! I tried massaging myself earlier and it def relaxed me so unsure what’s in thallt area to cause that. I find music (prince) wakes me up doesn’t send me to sleep - he’s my main playlist (hence this membership) I have such an emotional reaction like I’m sure many of us do it wouldn’t soothe me to sleep! Any suggestions?

Once again thank you all.

You saved my bacon last night and I’m happy to report hubby got his client so it was worth the feeling of complete helplessness!

Empress - the counting thing is really good!! I didn’t think to deep breathe I always thought it a bit dramatic but if you think it works I’m there if this continues! There’s a Real common theme here about alcohol too. Why is everything good bad for you!?

Another thing I find helpful is to turn off my iphone or ipad at least an hour before bed. Relax, have a cup of tea and try not to think about work, money, family crap, etc. It sounds corny, but think good thoughts. The deep breathing really helps me as it takes concentration to do it. Good luck!

Turning off all the electronic devices certainly helps. But... Try not to think about work, money etcetera... What will happen? You will think about money, work etcetera! So I guess it would be better to daydream a little about whatever you like. But I'm not sure if I'm the best person to give advice because just like Emma, I find myself waking up in the middle of the night all the time. Sometimes it's funny: every Prince fan will see the joke in waking up, looking at the clock and seeing it's 3:19. The trick is to try not to think too much. It's not easy. There are times when I wake up thinking, what just happened? Oh, I was dreaming. Then I must have been sleeping. Then I lie awake and start dreaming again. It can get really confusing in those early hours of the morning and when I wake up, I always need some time to get going.

Sounds a lot like anxiety. Ask your doctor what they think about you taking a xanex at night. My mind races at night. I can't go to sleep. Xanex has definately helped. Another thing I discovered by accident is Lemon & Ginger tea makes me sleepy. I started drinking it for digestive issues. It didn't help with digestion but it definately improved my sleep.

I'm just used to it now. It's probably been 8 years since I slept more than a couple of hours consecutively. I used to have really bad dreams but even though I don't have them anymore, I still wake up. I normally drift off at around 1 or 2 in the morning and get up at 6 A.M. During that time I'll wake up about 2 or 3 times. Sometimes more. I think if I didn't wake up during the night my fiancé would think I'd died in my sleep or something.

If you're struggling to sleep, listening to music can be good. Stay away from Prince music if you find that it keeps you awake. Try D'Angelo's Brown Sugar album. There's something very soothing about it. Maybe even get a cup of hot chocolate or warm milk before bed. That works a treat.

I don't mean to be indelicate or rude - but what is your age?

I only ask because it may be hormonal. (Though the alcohol doesn't help.) Perimenopausal sleep disturbances can start as early as your late 30s. Depending on your age, you might just need a little natural progesterone.

You may want to track when the sleep issues occur. Is it all the time? Or just at certain times in your cycle?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

As Genesia pointed out, sleep deprivation increases with age, particularly for menopausal women. For men also--annoying stuff like having to wake up to go to the restroom in the middle of the night. As you already observed, too much alcohol can have a negative effect on sleep; so can eating too late at night (as someone ages). Not all women can take replacement hormones but there are other things a woman can do--camomile tea, a natural sleep aid like melatonin, turning off all electronic devices and doing some meditation exercises before bed. What works for me sometimes also is listening to an e-book or a podcast (narration only) and I zone out and fall asleep. As some have said, sometimes having a separate bed sometimes can help a chronically sleep-deprived person like my sister (who is worse than I am; plus her husband has the worst snoring I've ever heard! LOL). I think what works best for those days when you know you have to get up early for a big job or some stressful situation the next day is to plan out your sleep preparation the night before and stick with it (no late nights out at the club, etc.). It really does make a difference... Good luck and pleasant dreams... wink

Lay off caffeine altogether. Start gradually cutting back each week so you won't get the dreaded headache.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Separate beds can work wonders. Your anxiety is building because you don't want to wake your spouse. Let him know your issues so he can be part of the solution also and so that he doesn't feel like it is him when you go to another bed (in your own house).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't do hormone replacement therapy!!! Two people I know have died of cancer with that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get outside and walk while listening to Prince music! The time will fly by, you'll have a beat to your step and it should help you de-stress.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take a bath before going to sleep and put lavender lotion on....the smell is relaxing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And then last but not least....take time with your hubby to lie in bed, cuddle, and talk about relaxing topics.

You really are a great bunch of people this is brilliant

Northc - a daydream about prince. Why do I need to wake up?! ❣️

Kitbradley - I’m going to keep a sleep diary as suggested and if none of all the fab advice works here I’m going to the dr and will mention at least. I never thought about it before this thread but I am a little anxious.

Emma - brown sugar album is so great and I haven’t drunk warm milk since I was a kid but I slept well then so maybe this is good!

Kpower/Luv - bats are terrifying I’ll be up all night haha

Genesia - I’m under 35 but never thought to keep a journal. I’m doing this ASAP

onlyforaminute - Down to three cups!

Purplethunder - ebook was a great call. I’m under 35 but at you wrote resonated. Sleep prep is something I never thought of before a big day and you’re right. My husbfkand is one for not turning off his devices and I think it bothers me. This is now to be targeted!

Ladylayla - I’m a big coffee fiend I guess it’s possible it’s too much. Bit young for hrt but that’s good to know for future. I don’t walk as much as I used to and I think hats agood Idea. I have lavender I leave use will try that tomo! Separate beds we are thinking of but you know what we dont chat before sleep

Tump - I don’t really know anything from when he was TTd - any preferred tracks?

I know coffee tastes good and it is hard to kick that habit. I'm always one for baby steps when trying to either break a habit or start something new. So when you do your coffee, start with 3/4 caffeine and 1/4 decaf. See how your body reacts to that. Take your time with it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The walking----again, start slowly. Try an after dinner walk just to de-stress while listening to your favorite music. You will be surprised how quickly your body will "jones" for it. If you are going to shift into an upbeat kind of walk, make sure this is done 4 hrs before bedtime

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Journaling is a good idea. My main use for it is to use when I have important communications with someone

  1. Doctor
  2. Lawyer
  3. Counselor
  4. Real Estate Agent

When my appointment is with them I have all questions and topics written down to address during our time. Takes a lot of worry out of the situation.

When I try to fall asleep, I try to find specific words in my mind. Let's say I want to find two-letter words.

ad, ah, am, as, at, aw, be, by, do, ef, eh, em, en, es, ew, fo, go, ha, he, hi, ho, if, in, is, it, la, me, mo, my, no, of, oh, or, ox, Oz, pi, so, to, uh, up, us, we, ya, Ye, yo

And before I come up with that list, I fall asleep.

I can never sleep. And then when I do I can never wake up.

Could never solve it.

Peace of mind helps, so meditation sometimes helps a bit.

Eating before sleeping also helps, but not the best diet.

And sleeping pills (Zolpidem), though they don't always work for me.
