Weren't the Cubs in first place in the NL central division for a long time? To get booted from the playoffs this quickly isn't right.

Likewise in the American League, it would be a huge letdown if a 100-win team like the Yankees is eliminated after one game.

Today's game and starting pitchers:

AL WILD CARD GAME:

NEW YORK YANKEES VS. OAKLAND ATHLETICS

Oakland (Liam Hendriks, 0-1, 4.13 ERA) at New York (Luis Severino, 19-8, 3.39 ERA), 8:00 p.m. ET, TBS

Oakland will use an opening pitcher for the first inning only rather than a conventional starter. Their bullpen is ace so we'll see how this works out for them.

Quick non-playoff note - I just noticed the Baltimore Orioles finished 61 games behind the Boston Red Sox. Unbelievably, that's only the sixth-worst finish in the modern era.

Prediction for today - Yankees all the way. The A's had a great run, and would have won the division in most years, but the Yankees are too loaded.

Related to this, it has been confirmed Orioles manager Buck Showalter will not return next year: https://baltimore.cbsloca...s-manager/

Too bad. I always thought he was a decent manager but man, was he handed a bad deal this year.

I didn't think the Yankees were going to win last night before the game started. The dominance they showed makes the division series against Boston look a lot more even now.

This thread deserves to be a sticky. From someone who does postseason game recaps, I think Sexton does a great job keeping us informed about the MLB playoffs.
