FBI: Sexual assaults on flights increasing 'at an alarming rate'

(CNN)The number of sexual assaults reported during commercial airline flights is increasing "at an alarming rate," the FBI said Wednesday, and the number of actual cases could be much higher.

FBI investigations into midair sexual assaults increased by 66% from fiscal year 2014 to 2017. The bureau said it had opened 63 investigations into sexual assault on aircraft in 2017, compared with 57 in 2016, 40 in 2015 and 38 in 2014...........

Pandurito!! hug

Who knows lol it could be.

I have never had any trouble when ever I fly.

If I did I would beat the living crap out of them and then push the steward/ess button lol

Are air marshalls on all plane flights???

i've been sat next to gropers before and it's usually easily settled with a fierce scowl and a threat to call for the air marshals. i actually had to smack a guys hand hard after he grabbed my thigh twice (verbal warning the first time) but he got the message after i socked him.

this is an aside, but doesn't it seem like a lot of the incidents occurring on planes are the result of over-drinking? why do airlines even serve alcohol on flights?

eek really. wow. Sorry you had to go through that.

As for the alcohol on flights... it is one of many beverages besides pop or water. Non-alcoholic beverages are available. Over drinking? probably one of the reasons but not for every situation.

well, he was a dick but he'd been drinking hard before the flight and during the flight. plus he was an older dude being what he thought of as 'jovial' and 'flirting' with me in the seat next to him. it just took extra effort to get through to him. people who are drunk do a lot of stupid things, which is why i blamed the alcohol and not him.

i was annoyed but fine in the end so no worries. and actually i shouldn't have touched him at all, but should instead have called for the attendant. the danger of smacking a stranger like that is that one could end up being accused of assault. confused

No. This is real. Including rape. Flight attendants are some of the victims too. Read their accounts.

Sorry that you had to go through that with some obnoxious drunk. I've never had any bad experiences flying but I bet plenty of people have. For rape though--it seems like the only place it could happen would be in the restroom?!! eek confused

Probably for the same reason people drink at social events and bars. To calm fear nerves and anxiety.

I know of people who start drinking before the get to airport.

I think the alchohol served on planes need to be pulled.

I see. Punish everyone because of a couple of assholes on a flight.

I have a (as in one) cocktail on the plane every time I fly. It gets me through what is otherwise a very stressful time and I cause no problems on the plane. I read my book, listen to music, and sip my drink. Why should I have to give that up (or go to a doctor to get a prescription for Xanax) because some jerk got handsy? Punish him - not me.

Yes this. First, if you are that drunk before the flight, you will not fly. And they don't serve that much drinks during the flight to get drunk.

If you behave like an asshole while drinking, you were already an asshole without drinking.

That said, i fly a lot, i never have ever seen any trouble.

I believe you, but i don't get it.

How can you get raped with so many people around you?

The restrooms are so small, if you would scream, everybody would notice.

It means that two people go together to a restroom, with one of them against their will, and they have sexual intercourse, with one of them screaming.....and noone takes action?

Even if they are not screaming, you have to go to a restroom.

Or are people raped on their seats?

Yeah...I'm skeptical of the rape claims, too. Most of the flights I've been on in the last three years have been jam-packed full. There is just no way anyone is getting raped on a flight without someone else knowing about it.

That said, I totally believe a person could get groped. Especially on a red-eye flight when they have all the cabin lights off so people can sleep. This is why you would NEVER see me catching 40 winks (or more) on an airplane. Total awareness at all times - that's my motto.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
