Definitely worth seeing to see what you think. It's a movie that has taken great pains to weave a lot of clues, details, and forshadowing throughout in the best way possible. But it's also a movie that has moments that "jump the shark" for some viewers and makes them laugh... others are laughing as a nervous fear reaction, and others are just plain terrified.

Well, I was all set to go to the 10:30 showing of "Herditary" at the local Booze and Chow. Early Father's Day present! But as I went online to buy tickets, I kept getting some weird error message. I got the same message at the other local Booze and Chow. So I called Booze and Chow #1.

"Hey, got any tickets left for the 10:30 showing of Hereditary?"

"We cancelled that showing."

"ZOMG, really? Is the movie THAT scary?!? Have you had a rash of heart attacks? TELL ME."

"Uh, no sir. We replaced the 10:30 showing with another showing of Incredible 2. We didn't sell any tickets for Hereditary, so we switched out to something that will sell."

"Oh. Do you suppose that's what the other Booze and Chow did with their late show too? Because I can't buy tickets there, either."

"Yes, I'm sure that's what happened".

WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

While we were eating dinner and THOUGHT we were going to the Booze and Chow to watch "Heredity" we watched "Jeremiah Johnson". Not bad!

The best part was when my son screamed, "I'VE SEEN THAT BEFORE!" and then he rewound the movie to show us what he'd seen, which was:




Apparently the Millenials use this image for memes. Considering I still don't know the correct pronunciation of "meme", I'll let this go.

Anyway, "Jeremiah Johnson" is basically the same story as about 10 or 15 of the 100 Louis L'Amour books I've read. The only thing that was different was the Crows. For some unknown reason, after Robert Redford married a Crow woman in a ceremony officiated by a Crow, he leaves to go sell some furs and the Crows come back and slaughter his family. Redford then lays waste to most of the Crows, who then declare war on him.

But unlike every other Indian story I've ever read, the Crows only attack one Crow at a time. Despite the fact that there were about 50 or 3,000 Crows, they only came after Redford in single file. It turns out that no single Crow was a match for Redford.

The movie ends when one of the last remaining Crows finds Redford riding through the mountains and holds up his hand to signify that the war - and the movie - is over.

"Jeremiah Johnson" is a pretty good depiction of what it took to settle in the mountains. And it has an intermission! Even on cable TV! That's pretty cool and worth one rating point, which gives "Jeremiah Johnson" a rating of:

3.5 Bone Tomahawks out of 5 Bone Tomahawks. And yes, every time a Crow attacked Redford, I loudly informed my family that they were trying to Bone Tomahawk Redford.

Then, after "Jeremiah Johnson" we decided that since we couldn't go watch "Heredity" at the Booze and Chow, we'd just have some booze and watch a movie at home. There were many, many great movies to choose from. We didn't choose any of them.

We chose "I, Tonya".

This movie SUCKS. It SUCKS in all capital letters. I do not care how scary, unsettling, disturbing or whatever "Heredity" is - there is no possible way it could affect me as negatively as "I, Tonya" did.

This movie SUCKS.

First of all, there are no good guys. There is no one to root for. Everyone sucks. And I mean EVERYONE. I wanted to take a baseball bat to the head of Allison Janney. Good gosh, I hate smoking and that is ALL Janney does...well, she smokes and she drops F-bombs. If Tonya Harding's mom is anything like Allison Janney's character, she deserves everything bad that can possibly happen to her. She SUCKS.

Tonya Harding SUCKS. Hey, I totally believe she didn't know anything about the Kerrigan attack. And she STILL SUCKS. There was no way to root for her. None at all. She is totally unlikeable. I wanted to take a baseball bat to her, too.

Jeff Gilooley SUCKS. Since I can't spell "Gillooley" right, I'm going to call him by his new name, Jeff Stone. He SUCKS. He's a woman-beater. Anyone that hits a woman SUCKS. Jeff Stone SUCKS.

All the bad guys SUCK. What a bunch of morons. They all SUCK.

EDIT #1 OF WHAT MAY BE SEVERAL EDITS, BECAUSE THE MORE I THINK ABOUT THIS MOVIE, THE MORE THINGS I REMEMBER THAT SUCKED:

I forgot - the "Hard Copy" guy SUCKED. What was his purpose to be in the movie? Absolutely none. He added nothing. There was no reason whatsoever for his character. He SUCKED.

The music SUCKED or to be more precise, the use of the music SUCKED. I am SO TIRED of the "dramatic" use of pop/rock songs. It was so bad that after the third HERE IS THE BEGINNING OF A ROCK SONG SO YOU KNOW IT'S TIME TO CHEER AND DRINK YOUR BOOZE episode, I started telling my son (who is the one that made us watch this turkey), "I bet they play 'Fortunate Son', don't they?!? They're going to play 'Fortunate Son' next, aren't they?" If you don't get that, watch this:



The director SUCKS. Like I said, there are no good guys in this movie. There is no one, and I mean NO ONE, worth rooting for. But the one guy played for sympathy is Jeff Stone. His idiot friend really screwed up and the director tries to make Stone a sympathetic character. BUT HE IS A FREAKING WIFE-BEATER. A SERIAL WIFE-BEATER. The director - whose name I do not know and never ever want to know - actually makes a wife-beater the most sympathetic character in the movie. He or she SUCKS.

This movie was a complete waste of time. I'm watching a rerun of "Weekend Update" on "Saturday Night Live" just hoping it will wash away some of the depression left over from "I, Tonya".

To recap, "I, Tonya" SUCKS.

It gets a zero. It IS a zero. I hate this movie. EDIT: I mean, I really, really, really hate this movie.

I don't know. The two Booze and Chows here in Clear Lake are part of the same organization, and they both put the kibosh on the last screening of "Hereditary" in order to add another showing of "Incredibles 2". Maybe both those movies have the same distributor? But the lady at the first Booze and Chow said switching movies was pretty common.

The worst part about it was that I had to watch "I, Tonya". I should be extremely mad at the Booze and Chow except...well, they serve booze. But there isn't enough booze in the world to make "I, Tonya" watchable. I hate that movie.

Mommie Dearest (1981) Is it an accurate depiction of screen legend Joan Crawford based on Christina Crawford's best seller? Nope. However, its has to be one of the most campiest biopics I have ever watched, and Faye Dunaway gives one of the most jaw-droppingly, complex, fearless, mesmerizing freak out performances ever captured on film. What lets this film down is simply the editing......there's no sense of time. Plus, there is no mention of her other children or the drama that happened during the making of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1964) with her arch rival Bette Davis, and its aftermarth (which was covered so brilliantly in Feud: Bette and Joan (2017) which I highly recommend). Nevertheless, if you watch this film in the right frame of mind, you will be entertained by this potboiler. I give it a 4 out of 5

i saw hereditary yesterday, & liked it a lot, almost loved it, though i was just a touch underwhelmed when the movie revealed exactly what it was up to. up to that point it had felt incredibly fresh & exciting, like it was taking this leap into the unknown, so it felt like something of a let-down to find out that it was leading to something a bit common. incredibly well done regardless, i thought. 4/5

Emily Blunt does her best Clarice Starling, and Benicio Del Toro fits like a glove into the laconic antihero role. Strong turns by Josh Brolin and a pre-Get Out Daniel Kaluuya. Well directed.

OK, got it? Spoilers ahead!

I got to the local Booze and Chow just in time to get some booze, but not enough time to get some chow. (The local Booze and Chow is actually a Booze and Chow Lite - you have to order and receive your food at the counter. No waitstaff. The full-service Booze and Chow is across the freeway, in a big mall, and I don't really like crossing the freeway. Must be the country boy in me.)

As I sat down in my school desk/movie seat with my two Jack and Cokes (don't judge me, I didn't want to get up), the lights went down and the previews went up. Hey, let's activate the RodeoSchro Preview Indication Device!

First preview - Megladon, starring Jason Statham. Boooooring.
Second preview - The Purge: Backstory No One Cares About. Seriously - we already know the story! We know how it started, and we know how it ends. What could possibly be interesting about this movie? I'll tell you what - MY GREAT IDEA FOR THE BEST PURGE MOVIE EVAH! (Get used to my hip language, there's more of it to come.) OK, so check this out:

The gimmick in the Purge is that all crime is legal - even murder. But murder isn't the crime best suited for a Purge, is it? Nope! Do you know what the best crime for a Purge is?

Bank robbery!

Think about it - during a Purge, you can LEGALLY rob Fort Knox! All you need is firepower. Heck, war is legal so do it! Rob the biggest place you can because if you survive, you get to keep what you steal! I think the third script in my very own movie trilogy is going to be "Purge: Like Ocean's 11 But Without The Sneaking Around And With Lots Of Guns". Ka-CHING!

Third preview - the new Marky Mark movie. I forget what it's about but Marky Mark does a lot of scowling. He is the Scowliest White Guy, and Second Scowliest Guy In America. You know who is first, right? Right - Ice Cube! Here are Ice Cube and Marky Mark scowling, for your pleasure:




I can see it now - the FOURTH movie in my quadrology will be The Great Scowl-Off. It'll be 90 minutes of scowling. Ka-CHING Ka CHING!

I forgot the other 13 previews but based on what I saw and remembered, I was feeling good about "Hereditary". Plus, I'd downed the first Jack and Coke by the end of the previews. Let's rock!

And rock we did - an hour later. Man, this movie is SLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW. It sure takes it's own sweet time getting to the action. It takes an hour for: Grandma to die; Mom to freak out; very creepy daughter to behead a bird; goofy son to smoke a bowl and get high AF; goofy son to take very creepy daughter to party where he gets high AF again; very creepy daughter to get beheaded AF by a telephone pole; Mom to find beheaded daughter in back seat of family Volvo; Mom to meet a lady who turns out to be a medium; and...wait. First I have a couple "medium" jokes.

JOKE 1 - Did you hear about the midget fortune teller who broke out of prison? The newspaper headline read "SMALL MEDIUM AT LARGE".

JOKE 2 - Did you hear about the sexually roused midget found frozen to death? The newspaper headline read "FOUND: FRIGID MIDGET WITH A RIGID DIGIT".

JOKE 3 - This is not a joke, actually. I took my wife to see the Long Island Medium when she came to Houston a few years back. For this, I should have been named Husband of the Year, but some dude named Obama somehow beat me out.

Some time around the end of that first movie hour Mom meets a nice lady who, it turns out, is a devil-worshipper although this is not immediately known to Mom. The nice lady manipulates Mom into conjuring up the spirit of the dead beheaded daughter, which in turn basically releases the hellhounds.

Mom either gets Dad burned up by Satan, or burns him up herself. You decide. Meanwhile, the goofy son is tormented at all times but it turns out this is only because Satan needs his body and is driving him mad so he will commit suicide and flush out his spirit. Or something like that.

The first hour of this movie is very slow. Yuck. The next 30 minutes, however, are pretty good. Yay! The final five minutes are not as mind-bogglingly scary as you think they should be. Bummer.

This movie is NOT the scariest movie of the summer, or of all time. It is also not all that messed up, unless seeing a very creepy-looking 13-year-old girl get beheaded AF by a telephone pole messes you up. It's not funny; I never saw anything that I thought would make anyone laugh. I'm goiing to assume the people I read about who laughed in the theater were high AF. (Did you guess that the term "AF" was the other hip thing I was going to say?)

It's not bad, it's not great. It has its moments. The ending, while maybe not as other-worldly as you might want, is still OK. I am glad I saw it, and I'm really glad no one else in my family did. I would NEVER hear the end of it. They'd ride me like I rode them over that travesty known as "I, Tonya" (ugh, just typing that title makes me want to poke my eyes out).

"Heredity" gets a rating of exactly 3.1415 Dollhouses That Don't Mean Anything out of All The Dollhouse That Don't Mean Anything.

Hereditary (2018)

Don't believe the hype. Its not a bad movie, but nowhere near the masterpiece the reviewers have been claiming it is.

Its too long ... 2hrs 7mins ... should have been trimmed by at least 20mins. Some scenes, such as Annie trying to convince Steve to throw the book in the fire, dragged needlessly.

There's not a lot of sympathy for the main characters ... none of them come across as likeable so you're not invested in their fate.

Some of the scares are old hat ... the standard 'something standing in the shadows' stuff used in a lot of Insidious style modern horrors ... a hangover from the J-horror stuff of the 90s. Fair few other horror cliches in there to, such as all devil worshippers/witches have to be old, wrinkly and nude! I'm ok with a horror film riffing on past tropes, but only if its done well.

The 'twist' is fairly predictable. The main character involved drops a line about 45mins in that, for me at least, gave the twist away.

Plot is a bit schizo ... is it grounded in reality a la Rosemary's Baby, or is it more supernatural/surreal, hence the floating headless bodies? It tries to be both but doesn't quite achieve either.

Having said all that, there's some very good set pieces in it. Charlie and Peter's drive to the hospital was great and I didn't see that scene/twist coming. Some great images to, such as the neck sawing at the end and the discovery of Charlie in the car.

Overall 6/10

I never tire of this film.

All of the performances are stellar.

I'd previously thought Julia Roberts to be an average actor (my only exposure to her had been Pretty Woman, The Player, Everyone Says I Love You, and a shitload of trailers), but what she does here blew my mind. And Natalie Portman was only 22 when this was shot? The way she plays knowingness in the exhibit opening and the strip club scenes? Again - mind blown. For me, Law's the weakest link (I thought his choices were wrong in the scene where he confronts Owen in the latter's office - but, then again, that might've been Nichols' direction), but he's still pretty fucking damn good.

This should've won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Owen), Best Actress (Roberts), Best Supporting Actress (Portman) and Best Adapted Screenplay. Maybe even Best Editing and Best Cinematography, too.

My experience has been that this movie is incredibly polarizing. The realists (to my mind, anyway) love it; romantics loathe it. As I consider myself a realist , I rate it as follows:

2 Days in Paris (2007) - Marion and Jack try to rekindle their relationship with a visit to Paris, home of Marion's parents -- and several of her ex-boyfriends.

I remember liking this a lot the first time around, but a few minutes in, the annoying characters had me second-guessing myself. However, as the film played on, the hilarity and bittersweet ending reminded me of its appeal. Also, I love Julie Delpy. 4/5

I'm giving this movie 2.5 pre-viewing stars just because on the poster, the names of the stars are actually right above the star so named. Incredibly, 99% of all movie posters have the names transposed. God only knows why.
