That's actually the first thing I thought about. Seems to me Hulk was shook when he got that work from Thanos.

I also think that's most likely the reason Banner couldn't turn himself into Hulk. Even though that wasn't Hulk's first defeat, he seemed somewhat startled during the fight against Thanos and I think that was the first time I saw that kind of expression from him. This is pretty interesting because if that's the case we may get to see the backstory of Banner/Hulk relations in depth in the next Avengers film. Banner's tragic upbringing, his relationship with his mom and his abusive father - and the real reason why Banner's "always angry" and all that.
Another theory on why Hulk won't come out I've heard is that Banner's glad to be back on earth but Hulk probably is pissed about having been shipped back to the planet he didn't want to return to. In Ragnarok(2017), Hulk didn't want to come back to Earth because he thought everyone there hated him. To some degree I think it's understandable why Hulk doesn't want to come out and fight for the Earthlings now.

... its not just Earthlings he's fighting for though, its half the population of the entire universe.

I think he's either afraid after getting beaten by Thanos or its some sort of performance anxiety. I presume in the sequel one of the big heroes will die (Cap or Thor) and it'll upset him and p*ss him off so much that the Hulk will finally return even angrier and more powerful than ever.

True, but Hulk has only a limited sample size of how the universe treats him, and only a sliver of it was good, and he was treated well only when he was useful for killing, which doesn't inspire a lot of love.

I'd bet it would take Black Widow being in real danger of death for him snap to it.

I really like this explanation. Ultimately Hulk did get his ass beat, but there has to be something inside of Banner where his inner personalities join that knows that smashing is not enough. Hulk is supposed to be Banners protector, and not just unchecked rage. If he was unchecked rage, there would be no way he could exist on a team. As Banner has been working to control, and the Hulk psyche began to mature, that has to have thrown the relationship off and is more adversarial instead of protective.

I'll be excited to see either the full Merged Hulk (sometimes called Professor, but also where Hulk was during Planet Hulk/World War Hulk) or even a full Grey Hulk (a la Joe Fixit).

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

Very much enjoyed the movie well done Hollywood! $400 mil budget sounds insane but money well spent I guess. Some thoughts that lingered in my head after watching it twice are

1. Thanos is a pretty complex villain and I like how they shed fair amount of light on that part.

2. The entrance of the Guardians of Galaxy members couldn't have been more perfect! Everyone was laughing and some even clapped in the theatre.

3. They could've given Black Panther a little more screen time on the battle field.
(While on the subject, for such a significantly weak character who hardly contributes to the fight, Black Widow gets too much attention.)

4. Really couldn't care less who's really dead and who lives till the end. What would actually piss me off would be if they brought ALL the good guys back to life. As if we need another "good guys live and all the bad guys die" film...Demanding "realistic" story line from Marvel universe may seem ridiculous, but I just want the story to flow well. Besides it'd be refreshing to see a movie that takes the concept of 'sacrifice' more seriously for once.

5. Can't say I'm one of those people who loved the movie Dr. Strange, but his presence is dominating in Infinity War.

[Edited 5/2/18 19:43pm]

Fortunately hollywood has nothing to do with the Marvel movies. Disney funds both Star Wars and Marvel movies and the majority of Marvel movies are filmed in Georgia at Tyler Perry Studios. I'm very glad this is happening because now Hollywood is not needed from big movies as their movies have been flopping like crazy. But now everyone can see and identify with someone who looks like them and see unity of people from different backgrounds on the screen.
