I know. I can read. The EU. It still is stupid to make him this man behind the mob just for fan or service.

The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels are canon, they were made by Lucasfilm. The first time they incorporated the cartoons into the film plot points was Episode III.

The cartoons created this backstory for Maul at least 5 years ago. It was gratuitous, because I can't tell what they're going to do with it. Maybe Disney wanted Maul in place for a possible sequel (which Solo won't get) or another spinoff (which, if it's Kenobi or Vader, I'm all for). He's the closest thing to Boba Fett the new films have produced and they want to milk him.

The animated TV series have arguably been better at storytelling than the live-action films have been for the last 20 years.

All that being said, I agree -- however well it was set up, the cameo wasn't really necessary to the story.

Finally seen it!
The Darth Maul cameo was interesting and probably a setup for a Darth Maul movie, which I've been waiting for since Episode 1.
The movie was OK, a lot of action but lame story, the actor's were good and the guy playing Han was OK, the only thing that annoys me is his constant smile or smirk, there's no edge to that guy like how Harisson Ford played him.
I also find it pretty cheap to lump everything we know about Han Solo into 1 adventure:

- Meeting Chewbacca

- Meeting Lando

- Getting his blaster

- Getting the Millenium Falcon

- Kessel Run

- Han shoots first

for example I would have think that he would have met Chewy and then for a couple of years went on mini adventures with him then bump into Lando some time later while hustling and win the Falcon from him and have a business relation with him etc.

But this was a condensed intro to Han Solo and honestly I think it dimishes the character a bit.

There are many many references and easter eggs to other star wars movies (and the EU) as well as Indiana Jones movies. From name drops to items in the background to full-on sequences... it is awash in self-references.

One of the weird parts is how Han and Chewbacca met. Not only was it reminiscent of the Rancor scene in Return of the Jedi.... but it says something very creepy about Chewbacca! Which is, that he has eaten humans!

And like has been said they seemed to cover much of what we know about him... but not everything. But based on its box office it looks like we will not get a 2nd or 3rd movie. (Going to see Jabba and how he ended up owing him).

But Overall I liked it. The guy was fine as Han... I just let it happen. It is stilly to suggest one Harrison play Han... and there is a good chance that someone new play Indiana Jones....

I agree, they shouldnt have lumped everything in one movie.

Yeah, dont like that being shoehorned into his character.

The tone of the movie was so off. It marginalized the character that it needs to pretend this movie never happened and do a quick reboot. Just terrible filmmaking all the way around. I really wanted to like this movie.

Saw it last night ... enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but probably because I'd heard the reviews were a bit m'eh, so my expectations were fairly low. You make a good point though, they did cram alot in. But then if the intention was to only ever do one Solo prequel I guess they had to.

Thing that annoyed me was cramming Darth Maul in there. Felt totally forced, like they were desperate to have a last 'twist' that tied it in to the other films. For those not familiar with the extended universe it raises a huge "how the hell is he still alive" question which makes the ending a bit silly ... my missus actually laughed it was so preposterous to have him there after being sliced in half.

Actually, they had 2 if not 3 solo movies planned... and at least a 2nd with his dealings with Jabba...

Maul was already known to be alive in the Clone Wars and Rebels shows (which are official). I never liked that but it is what it is. (I assume there was something about his race that allows for him surviving)

The thing about it that was FORCED was him calling his lightsaber and turning it on... that was dumb.

Was that really Darth Maul or was that some one from his race. I mean Young Obi wan fought him in Phantom Meannce, then shouldn't Han Solo be alot older in New Hope?

It was. According to "canon" created through the Clone Wars and Rebels series, Maul survived for years until he was rescued by one of his kin and reconstructed by a clan of witches on his home planet. He then gained control over Mandalor and got involved in the crime syndicates. His arc was halted in Clone Wars and picked up at an older age in Rebels, where his arc ended closer to the time of ANH.

It appears that Solo occurs well before the events of ANH, during a time when Maul was in the syndicates. That jibes with Han's age in Solo.

OK so you are saying Darth Maul didn't really die in Phantom Meanace?

Yes, well not me... Lucasfilm did. It was approved by George... it is cannon. But I never watched much of the clone wars or Rebels... but he apparently lived.

Are those cartoons/CGI series/movies? Yeah I never saw them as well. I guess I'm ok with seeing Darth Maul again, he was one of the best things in Phantom Meanace

It's funny, but now we've reached religious-speak with Star Wars.

"Canon" refers to material, characters, events, storylines that are officially accepted as part of the Star Wars Universe/story. Like the "canonical" books in the Gospels.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, it decided that only official Lucasfilm SW projects and related material would be "canon." That cut out a whole lot of previously licensed comics and books in the "Extended Universe" from official storylines.

Lucasfilm revealed Maul was alive before Disney bought it, in Clone Wars. (you can find clips on YouTube). After Clone Wars left Maul's fate unresolved, Disney continued and resolved it in Rebels. His cameo in Solo occurs right in between.
