I digested what I saw overnight. Good film. Not great, and not as epic as say Rogue One, but it does a great job at tying up old lines, reasons and legends against the back drop of a space action movie. I enjoyed seeing the underbelly of the galaxy. Alden does a fairly good job. When you see it, think of the Han in A New Hope. The more sceptical and bitter Han, not the later ESB or ROTJ Han. Aldens Han is building up to what we see in ANH, and I think it works.

I edited the title to indicate SPOILERS! I will be back in about 14 hours to give my first impressions!

Now that the movie is out this topic may contain Spoilers!!!!

By the way, the whole Lando pan sexual thing is rubbish. Its not in the film. Don't know how those rumours started.

There is no SJW feel to this like The Last Jedi.

There is one comment made by L3 (the 'female' droid) that could be construded as girl power, but in the context, its more about droid rights than female rights.

Don't go in worrying about SJW. It doesn't go there.

SJW was what the original 1977 Star Wars had going for it. It showed a nobody farmboy joining a rebellion and defeating the official elected “nuclear” tough armed militaristic government; the un-civility expressed by Kenobi about laser gun use (not to mention Kenobi’s own minimalist, non extravagant, non materialistic, Eastern mythos styled manner); the Princess being tough, sarcastic, and in charge, and also knowing more about what was going on than the male characters. “They let us go.” “Not this ship, sister.”

Empire continued in it’s own way, but the biggest SJW plot twist was the reveal that great warrior hero, legendary, lead Jedi master... was the foreign/alien, little, strange food eating, Yoda. I wouldn’t count the Vader reveal as a moralistic/political one unless you dig deep enough to think that it subverts the conservative resolute belief in loyalty and faithfulness to your family and past heritage.

I don't disagree with your synopsis of the underline message in the original trilogy, but that was more classic SJ, rather than the current SJW drum, which is to single out issues.

One example scene that sticks out is in The Force Awakens. When Finn and Rey get knocked the ground by TIE shots on Jakku, Finn offers his hand to help Rey up like an old fashioned movie. The director makes a point of her having an issue with this.

Building equality in would be reflected by him not making the old fashioned move, and they both just jump up a run. But by leaving the old move in and making an issue of it, is treading an SJW path. What message is he trying to send and to who? Girls, did you not realise you don't need boys to get by? Boys, don't offer to help someone up, your suppressing them? No sure what he is trying to acheive.

With regards to Leia in ANH. Always had an issue with that bit. Not the comments, but the plot stupidity that, knowning they are being tracked, she still led a planet killer to the Rebel HQ. Why not call up a rendevous ship or beam the plans down from orbit and fly on? I hold her personally responisble for Porkins death.

Hey... I saw "Solo"

I really liked it! It felt the most like an adventure movie with lively character dynamics and actually grippable plot mechanics since...."Star Wars" and "Empire Strikes Back". It felt like it's heists and predicaments, while not quite on that level of the 1977 and 1980 movies, were rooted in old adventure movies like classic westerns, and even a bit of James Bond vibe. Sure it had some goofy details that drifted from good taste...

But it also had super wide landscape shots with tiny characters in frame that were not just transitions or travel shots!

And I saw some of the SJW elements in there... come on... the robot who takes off restraining bolts... and the pansexual element of Lando was there. For sure.

And Donald Glover did great! The new young Han was great! The Queen of Dragons was excellent! Oops... actually she really was good. The characters were substantial.

I still don't appreciate having someone as obviously recognizable a star as Woody Harrelson cast in a Star Wars fantasy movie... but the character was written well, and he is a good actor.

The writers did an amazing job (Kasdan family teamup?). And it felt like it had the most roots to the original Star Wars in this thematic way... and not to mention (same writer) a bit of some of the Raiders spirit in there.

One thing that Star Wars did was injecting total Americana into an exotic, foreign environment. And that brash, spirited American persona goofly and heartfully adventured through it in a messy way. Same with Raiders. They captured that feeling here too. They understood that.

It was strange because I left to go watch it in the middle of watching an episode of Westworld... but Thandie followed me.

SPOILER Warning! (I will keep them somewhat minor)

for one: forget everything you think you know about Han Solo...many elements of his backstory

are wiped away...

I really liked it... There are some pacing issues but overall it is good!

I really liked the opening. What I felt was a little lacking was the train part.

I also think Qi'ra was great and Alden Ehrenreich pulled off Han. And Donald
Glover was great as LANDO (He needs a movie).

I also really like the girl with the freckles.

I did not care for the big cameo near the end...but it got a reaction!

I really liked the stuff with the Falcon...

I felt the sequel set up was a bit too much...

Lando was pretty cool cool

Han speaks wookie!!! falloff

The character at the end : Hes alive!! lol

Well some of us know he is alive, but never expected to see him in a movie.

Was the ending a set up for another movie?

The movie is called " Solo : A star wars story" so i figureed it was a one-off movie shrug

I was really hoping for a Jabba appearence sigh

Over all i enjoyed it, but i wont say its great. But i didnt expect greatness.

I knoticed a few easter-eggs or refrences to the star wars universe.

Woodys character says he killed Aurra Sing. she is berifly seen in episode 1

Mandalorian armor (bobba fett) can be seen in the background in the fight sceen near the end.

Bossk The bounty huntrers name was thrown in the somewhere

latest?cb=20130219044712

Hans lady friend was trained in the "Masters of Teräs Käsi"

That was an old PlayStation game lol

the question who shot first, Han shots first

I missed the Masters of Teras Kasi but spotted...

Mandalorian armour on display in the space yacht (was that a mandalorian sword Qu'ra used?)

Lando "I hate you". Han "I know". Great mirror.

Bossk and Aura mentions.

Lando " I hate mining facilities".

Model of Cloud City in the Falcon.

Han entering the vault with a staff seems a mirror of Indy in the map room.

Han shot first!

things I believe were changed from the older stories or lore...

How Han and Chewie meet. I thought he freed him from Kessel.

I also did not like the Kessel run... what? seems lame.

There is really nothing to spoil about the movie.
The only thing can think of is when you find out who the real leader of Crimson Dawn was. And that was very berif.

The fighting Donk droids was funny. The always appeard so usless and harmless.

I caught most of the other refrences too, there is a ton of them. Some were obvious

In the final fight sceen after the kill the boss guy, Han says something, i dont dont remember his exact words. (how did you do that?) she says shes trained in the masters of tara kasi

They played Duel of the Fates during the [REDACTED] scene. 2nd straight anthology to reference the prequels. I really hope the 2020 film is Kenobi for that reason.

The Imperial March used for recruiting ads was bizarre.

The movie was very dark and hard to see a lot of the time. The train battle looked very fake, the technology is not there yet. I couldn't even get a good look at the rookie that Chewie rescued. I still really enjoyed it enough to want to see it a couple more times before the home video release.

I should have seen it in 2D on the bigger screen.

I loved the SOLO movie. I will return a second possibly third time. The only time I saw a film 3 times in the theater was for ET! This was a spectacular Star Wars movie. I would agree at times the tempo slowed and I was at a dine-in theater and in a food come and maybe a couple parts were lame but you know that was like seconds in an overall awesome film.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

I watched 3d and when I go back I'll just go 2d. I didn't think 3d was anything special. Though the film itself I loved it.

Loved it!!! It was a little too long, but that's fine. They made some changes (Han getting the Solo name from an Imperial officer, the way he met Chewie), but they were very close to what the EU told us about Han's past. Lando just made me grin thru the entire movie. I cannot stop saying, "The Calrissian Chronicles, Chapter Five..." in my Lando voice, cracking myself up every time. Not sure how i feel about the "surprise" character that showed up...I know he supposedly survived, but that was unexpected...not in a good way. I'll see it again, maybe twice...two thumbs up from me! nod
