I've just seen the david lynch film mulholland drive and I dont have a clue what ive just seen can anyone explain it?

I've always felt like the movie was a two different dreams-set within a whole dream sequence. I would've articulated myself further if it weren't for this maniac headache.

Side note and I don't mean to go off topic, but I've always thought that Robert Altman played a huge role in influencing Lynch, especialy after watching Three Women.

No wonder I could'nt work it out.

the standard interpretation that i believe the internet seems to have settled on is that the first section of the movie to the point where the cowboy says 'hey pretty girl, time to wake up' (or something like that) is the dream/fantasy of diane/betty. she's been rejected by rita/camilla, & concocts a fantasy where she is hero trying to undo the mystery of rita while being undermined by sinister forces. the last section is reality, where diane is a small-time failed actress & embittered ex.

as far as i know, lynch himself has never commented on any of this.

Thanks that kind of puts some light onto it Im going to have to watch it again now.

It's a less mystifying version of "Lost Highway"...

- Girl goes to Hollywood with a big naive, bright eyed dream.

- Girl get's dumped by everyone and het naive dream shatters to pieces while her girlfriend rises to the top by dubious means.

- Girl ends up a waitress.

- Girl's jealousy kills her and the fever dream starts with reality chasing her.

In a nutshell...
