LAWD... lol You sound like my cousin! I'm in Cincinnati Ohio now because she couldn't connect the printer to her 8 year old Toshiba laptop. rolleyes Got that connect, built a simple "samab-ish" network systen to connect her Linux laptop, to her Android phone and tablet. lol My goodness. Ihaven't forgot about Thunderbird.. will be back. biggrin

LOL, the thing is I am actually pretty good with some tech but that mess you were talking is above my pay grade. lol

Chile please....

"Install the Linux Distro of your choice, up grade your RAM to whatever the max is for the desktop, add soundcard, or video card youself. The most expensive thing you'll buy is a video card $150 /$250 but you'll still have saved a lot of money... versus by the desktop of the Linux Builders. I'd wouldn't purchase anything witl less than a 3.00 GHz or Intale Dual or Quad Core."

Not gonna happen, lol

I installed the Edge Adblock zip file when I started with Win 10 about a year ago. I use Windows Defender but not Avast. Avast seems to interfere more than help, I've tried it twice. When I stayed in a hotel it went crazy trying to sell me stuff.

If your going to depend on Windows Defender as your anti-virus program, I strongly recommend, a piece of software called SANDBOXIE: https://www.sandboxie.com there's a one time fee, for the life of your computer. Its a powerful program, which runs your programs inside a sandbox, nothing touch's your system itself, and isolating possible malware from infecting your Windows 10 system also. You can sandbox your browser, email, or any program you downloaded from the web. There are bunch of videos on YouTube to show how it works... it not complicated or hard set it up. Give me a check back here if you get it.

Free antivus software for Windows doens't cut it these days... there so much malware/virus shit out there being created daily. What web-browser are you using poppys? Because I'll post some alternative to Microsoft's and Google soon. I'd bite the bullet and purchase antiviral software. But if you want to say with Windows Defender, Sandboxie will offer you a lot of protection, one time purchase for the life of that computer is great.

I'm not a fan of Hotel WiFi, I always use a Hotspot called Karma.

Karma WebSite: https://yourkarma.com/wifi/2017-2/

Payment Options: https://yourkarma.com/wifi/pricing/

I'll be back to give options for Browsers for Microsoft, Apple & Linux & Blockers.

Tip, courtesy of The New York Times,

"What To Do if Your Email is Hacked"

By
J.D. Biersdorfer (April 11, 2017)

If a scammer has swiped your password and is using your account to spew spam, take action and add measures to help stop it from happening again.

Q. Could you please review best practices if one’s email is hacked? Is changing the password for that email sufficient? Is it necessary to change the email address (use a whole new email) for each site, like Amazon, that uses the hacked email as the user login?

A. If you still have access to the compromised account, changing the password is one of many steps you should take to protect yourself. If you are having trouble regaining control of the account, visit your mail provider’s site for instructions on recovering your account. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo all have guides on their sites, as should other email and internet service providers. Tell your friends that your account was hacked and to ignore any odd messages that appear to have come from you.

Your account may have been hacked through malicious software, so scan your computer for malware and viruses with a security program. If you do not have security software installed, you can use Microsoft’s built-in Windows Defender or Microsoft Security Essentials. Avast and AVG are among the many companies that make free basic antivirus software for Windows and Mac. Malwarebytes has free and trial versions of its malware-scanning program for Windows and Mac that can work alongside antivirus software. You should also update your computer and devices with the latest security updates. Full story in link below.

Thanks for this. I am older and dyslexic so I try to do the simplest thing that works. I am using Edge with EdgeAdblock.v2.1 zip file. I make sure Defender updates every day. Will look into sandboxie. I have used norton and avast in the past, they were both problematic.

For those of you who are Windows 10 users, I think Privacy Settings have changed. If they haven't yet this is what those settings look like in the near future. Always check privacy settings often, as different build of Windows 10 downloaded, privacy settings should be checked. Just incased they've been changed back to default.

Microsoft has received a fair amount of flak over the privacy settings in Windows 10, and the company has promised to provide more transparency around the data it collects in upcoming versions of the operating system.

Users can also opt out of some data collection features, but the process for doing so hasn’t always been as clear as it could be. So Microsoft is beginning to test a new set up process that makes it easier for users to see and understand their privacy options.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17115 is now rolling out to members of the Windows Insiders program, and users will be able to get an early look at the new pri...experience… or at least a possible version of it.

Microsoft is actually testing a few different options, including a single screen with toggles that let you enable or disable a bunch of different options, or seven individual screens that provide a little more information about what happens if each feature is enabled or disabled.

The settings you have control over include:

  • Speech recognition (allowing Cortana and other apps to send your voice data tot he cloud)
  • Find my Device (allowing Microsoft to track your location and help you find a missing device)
  • Inking & Typing (enabling language recognition and text suggestion, among other things)
  • Location (allowing weather, shopping, and other apps to automatically determine your location)
  • Diagnostic data (allowing your PC to send PC diagnostics, plus app, feature, and website data to Microsoft)
  • Tailored experiences (allowing Microsoft to use that data to recommend tips, offers, etc)

You can open the Start Menu on any Windows PC and type “privacy” to find the Privacy settings (or go to Start Menu -> Settings -> Privacy if you don’t feel like typing). You won’t see the new categories yet, but you will be able to disable some types of data collection you may or may not have known were enabled (or vice versa, I suppose).

E-SET is our anti-virus of choice at our inter-faith computer shop we also combine it with sandboxie, that's all the protection you'll need. McAfee is good, but like Norton its a resource hog and over time it becomes problematic.... you'll have to install and re-install if.

As I mentioned I list some extensions to assist to keep your computer a bit safer. PJ I hope you haven't ditched your old laptop cuz you are gonna throw Linux on it. I promsie I'll have videos up late June to show all what Linux is.

Here's a little story. My laptop battery died yesterday. I did the HP battery check, said it was kaput, but still under warranty. So I got on the online chat. They asked lot of questions, redid the test and said indeed it was dead and they would send me a replacement if I sent mine back first (at my expense) and it would also cost $25.

Typed that was totally ridiculous, I can get one on ebay for less than that with free shipping in 3 days, nothing personal to you (the rep). So after a time, he came back and said they were sending me one no charge, by next Wednesday. LOL, you gotta fight for your right to warranty!

Good for your poppys, HP knew dang well that under warranty, they should send you a computer box with a free shipping slip. HP has slipped in customer service and hardware, I don't buy HP's anymore.

nod It's a detachable battery, they executed the test remotely themselves, so they didn't need it back anyway. Which is the reason they gave when they finally decided to honor their warranty. Made no sense because they knew that in the first place, but I just took the "win" and stopped chatting while I was ahead. Score 1 for getting what you were promised when you bought the thing.

lol You thought the sales rep was attempting to pull a fast one, didn't ya. If you went to Best Buy, I know why you were looking at him or her side ways.Them folks a BB ain't right most of the time. lol E-SET doesn't clog up your system, slow it down and E-Set scan is pretty fast. These days having one anti-virus software not going to cut on Window's, especially of your go everywhere on your computer. E-Set & Sandboxie, gives you excellent protection.

Correction: Sandboxie just changed their sub. fee, its know yearly. $20.95. neutral

Licensing options change

Post by Barb@Invincea » Tue Apr 03, 2018 5:52 pm

All,

We are reevaluating our licensing options for Sandboxie. For the time being, the only available product for purchase is the 1-year Personal (home use) license, please find it below:
https://www.sandboxie.com/HomeUse

Regards,
Barb.-
Be that as it may still worth getting, does a damn good job of malware protection and doesn't use much computer resources. I wouldn't use a Windows computer without, Sanboxie. I'm no feelin' the yearly sub thing. I'm glad I'm a Linux user. neutral

thumbs up!

It was at Microcenter not Best Buy...and they're supposed to be more "tech savvy".

What's a good "free" anti-virus? I downloaded AVG but I keep getting pop-ups begging for the paid subscription.
