Question for HP Notebook/Laptop Owners

My HP laptop has been acting up lately.Surprisingly its running great today.I might need to erase everything on my computer and do a factory reset to get it back to like it was when I first got it...So I'm thinking of buying a few flashdrives so I can store my music and pictures on it and I'm gonna get a Windows 10 Reinstall Disc. The people at bestbuy shouldve gave me one but they didnt.I found the Windwows 10 Disc on amazon but it says I have to have the product key for it to work.Where exactly is the product key on my laptop? i asked on amazon under the questions area for the laptop model but no one has answered.

Isn't the original label under the laptop?

Was this originally a laptop with Windows 10 preinstalled? If Best Buy was suppose to give you a Windows 10 or CD disc Re-install Disc... than you should raise hell until they give you one. Is your computer a Windows 7, 8, or 10.

If your have Windows 7 laptop, if you don't see a sticker with product key look in your computer BIOs. Shutdown your computer and power up and immediately start hitting hit continuously hit F10. On the first page you should see your computer's product key. If you have a Windows 8 or 10, you shouldn't need a product key because its "in" the computer. In most instances the computer will ask you if you wish to repair or re-install Win 10. If you can, attempt repair 1st, if that's not an option or doesn't repair entirely reinstall 10. Another thing about re-installing 10, make sure you also back up "third party software" if you choose the repair option. W10 may remove software they "think" you should be using or need.

I agree, trying but retirement and a lot of free time has been a misnomer for me. lol Hopefully in th near futuredon't and I can get this off the ground. More than ever, I think people should at least know there are other options. Whether Linux is viable for everyone I can't say, but I really think most folks could walk away from Windows without many issues. But there is a learning curve ( no different than learning how to use Apple or Microsoft) and I found many people who'd rather keep getting it up the butt than to change to something that can potentially save you a lot of money and give you some control on how you wish to use a computer.

In theory ( Windows is still a hot miss) if you have a Win 8 or Win 10, you should have a partition for recover on your hard drive. In that recover partition, you have the option to either repair or reinstall Windows 10.

I'd caution use those Windows repair CD's whatever OS in a attempts to reinstall or fix Windows 7, 8, or 10. In most instances they are hit and miss and can do more damage to your computer. Aslo, HP has the worst site for choosing what drives you need reinstall their drivers. That's is if you wipe the OS off and reinstall Windows 10.

OK smile I'm not sure how to do this, but.... Linux is an OS. Just like Win is an OS, but a different one. It's FREE, price-wise. You can download it from the net and use it from a pendrive or DVD (after you burn one), and install it when you finally feel like.
It's COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from Win under the hood. Most of the software for it is free as well, for lots of common tasks - playing music or videos, browsing the web, doing office-y stuff, for example. It comes in different "distributions" which are essentially, a ton of packaged software included with the thing out-of-the box. It generally speaking outperforms Win in most respects, even though it doesn't cost anything!

How's that to start with? smile I think to carry on from here, going to Youtube and typing in "Linux intro" or whatever will get you the dirt? If you want to actually download, the place to go to is distrowatch.com . OK, I'm sure you guys have questions, fire away..... smile

If you're having trouble with an HP, it might have stealth installed HP Touchpoint. See this article to find out if it's affecting your computer and if so follow instructions to remove it. It worked for me.

Well, I wouldn't have a problem if we had a sticky on tech. We do have a lot of people with computer knowledge here. Whether we want to talk about cloud systems, hardware & software, security, or anything that would help orgers become more knowledgeable one the many options they truly have.

example: We are music lovers... so there upteem options to rip organize and store your music /movies on computer and stream it around your home and to your smartphone or tablet.

If the mod's don't have an issue with this... I can start it off.

Was this with the restore disc your purchased or were you attempting to use access Restore or Reinstall

with the partition on your HP computer?

Please give us details on what you've done so far.... it will help to offer options quicker. biggrin

Check the link I gave above to see if you have HP Touchpoint installed and if so remove it. It will cause problems like you've described.

OK, I cant' offer advice on this, cause I'm not a Windoze guy, but....bro, this sounds like a good opportunity to try out Linux.
