SWEETWATER, Fla. -- A newly installed pedestrian bridge connecting the campus of Florida International University (FIU) with the city of Sweetwater west of Miami collapsed Thursday, crushing several cars on the roadway below. Geesh, I heard in passing but I heard it hadn't been opened so I assumed no injuries. No idea. This is horrible.

Florida foot bridge collapse leaves 6 to 10 people dead -senator

A newly erected pedestrian bridge spanning several lanes of traffic collapsed at Florida International University on Thursday, killing six to 10 people, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida told TV station CBS Miami.

Emergency personnel with sniffer dogs searched for signs of life amid the wreckage of concrete slabs and twisted metal after the bridge crushed vehicles on one of the busiest roads in South Florida.

At least eight vehicles were trapped in the wreckage of the 950-ton bridge and at least 10 people have been transported to hospitals, officials and doctors told news conferences.

Saw this on the news. Something new called "accelerated bridge construction." rolleyes confused Bull. Shit. The companies involved had already had complaints and lawsuits. Where's the accountability and oversight? Heads will roll...

I don't understand why the road underneath was not closed off until all their testings were done.

Is the traffic that bad that they had to keep it open?
