Molly's Game (2017) - The true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target.

Another cracking screenplay from Aaron Sorkin. And Jessica Chastain looks absolutely stunning. 4/5

I met Sorkin when he was here at TIFF, promoting this flick. Was very sweet. Told him Moneyball was one of my favorite screenplays (and quoted part of the first page back to him!).

gabi on the roof in july (2010) -3.5/5 struggling artist-type's chaotic life gets more chaotic when his younger sister comes for a visit.

all of these people are awful. childish, petty, selfish, & shallow, and if i met any of them, i'd probably want to get away from them within 10 seconds.

but i laughed five or six times, genuine laughs, and i don't really think there's arguing with those results. if you're laughing, you can't really be having a bad time.

& the score is very pleasant at times.

soft in the head (2013) 4/5 self-destructive woman creates chaos in the lives of the well-intentioned people she meets. hugely enjoyable, lovably chaotic, ultimately sad mess of a film. there are laughs, goofy moments, but it's very much a believable portrait of a hugely destructive person, with a supporting cast of rather pitiful characters, all of them very well acted, i'd say.

kamikaze 1989 (1982) 2.5 west german sci-fi detective film. it's goofy & weird, but not goofy or weird enough. the main feeling i got from this was a numbing boredom. it has some fun moments that play almost like 'the apple' meets 'brazil' but not nearly enough of them.

Today I watched Black Panther (2018) and not only is it my fav film of the year so far, it's hands down my all-time fav Marvel film. It had everything I look for in a superhero film, a great story, beautifully shot, lots of action, an amazing soundtrack, beefcake scenes galore and a great message. Plus, the cast was top notch especially Danai Gurira as Okoye and Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger worship I give this Marvel classic a 5 out of 5 popcorn PS. Stay for the mid and end credit scenes.

How dare you?! hmph! mad wink neutral hmph!

I've seen it twice now and bought the soundtrack, its an amazing film and I cannot wait to get this on blu-ray nod music

The Breadwinner (2017) - A headstrong young girl in Afghanistan disguises herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.

Director Nora Twomey previously worked on the animated films, Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells, both of which I loved. The animation here is more conventional and the story is more contemporary--and heavy in an almost Grave of the Fireflies-kind of way. 4/5

The Post - 3.5 stars out fo 5. A timely movie but slightly marred by it's messages being hammered in ways that made it seem less realistic. For example, there is a wonderful feminist message here but the scene when the Graham character leaves the courthouse to a street lined with young women all admiringly looking at her was over the top. Back in the day, she was never seen as some type of leader of the feminist movement, and these young women hardly looked like any of the "radical feminists" of the time who might have been inclined to drive to DC to see their supposed hero. A couple of speeches about the free press also didn't seem to flow naturally in the dialogue even if I agreed with the message. On the other hand, I was impressed that I hardly recognized the ever recognizable Tom Hanks as he seemed to meld perfectly with his role.

I did groan a bit watching that last scene outside the courthouse. Spielberg wasn't subtle at all with his messages.

Visages villages / Faces Places (2017) - Director Agnes Varda and photographer/muralist J.R. journey through rural France and form an unlikely friendship.

Documentaries nominated for Academy Awards tend to be about very serious topics so it was very refreshing to watch one that was much more lighthearted. Director Agnes Varda must be one of the most adorable octogenarians I've ever seen. What an unexpected pleasure. 5/5

Call Me By Your Name. 4.5 stars. - Thanks to the 5 star reviews here, I went to the theatre rather then wait for it on demand tv. Definitely worth it, with the chemistry between the leads, the beautiful Italian settings, the unexpectedly deep father son dialogue towards the end, and music by my fave Sufjan Stevens.

Black Panther (2018)

I cannot put into words the cultural significance of this film, which may affect my objectivity but I don't care.

Ryan Coogler used this film as a vehicle to deftly touch upon some difficult issues within the African/American communities. It's the best superhero film since Wonder Woman and perhaps the best the MCU has produced.

L'insulte / The Insult (2017) - After an emotional exchange between a Lebanese Christian and a Palestinian refugee escalates, the men end up in a court case that gets national attention.

Some of the courtroom parts seemed contrived, but otherwise a powerful, riveting film. 4/5

The Square (2017) - A prestigious Stockholm museum's chief art curator finds himself in times of both professional and personal crisis as he attempts to set up a controversial new exhibit.

The surreal absurdity reminded me of a Buñuel movie. I liked it a lot, but it's a little too strange to win the Oscar for foreign language film I think. 4/5

It LOOKS like that guy is about to whip some serious ass but it SOUNDS like no ass gets whipped at all.

I'm conflicted and confused.

SPOILER

The character in the poster above is hired by an art museum to pretend he's an ape at a fancy-shmancy dinner and make the guests feel uncomfortable in a performance art piece. (The actor actually has worked as a stunt coordinator/movement coach on the recent Planet of the Apes films.) But he goes too far in provoking some of them and after he tries pulling a young woman out of the hall by her hair is when the other guests finally intervene and he's the one who gets his ass whipped. punch punching chair boxing fryingpan

Strong Island (2017) - A documentary examining the violent death of the filmmaker's brother and the judicial system that allowed his killer to go free.

Documentaries comprised primarily of talking heads can be a bit weary for me, but this was a moving tribute to a tragic crime victim. 3.5/5

i had a strongly negative reaction to the post, more so than you. its heart was in the right place, clearly, but, more than in most of his recent movies, spielberg's obviousness was at his most obvious.

i had to think of the post when i caught up with another newspaper movie this weekend, spotlight. all of the things the post kinda flubbed imo, i feel spotlight got right, excluding perhaps one scene where mark ruffalo gets a bit worked up. it let the story unfold, and all the drama was understated - it came from the facts & the story, not from music swelling while people made speeches, or from secretaries yelling out verdicts, or from meryl gliding out of the courtroom in front of adoring women.

4.5/5 for spotlight.

menashe (2017) 3.5/5 hassidic jewish widower in new york struggles to take care of his son while grinding against his restrictive religious traditions. interesting look into a world most of us have never seen, though the family drama itself is a bit ordinary.

man with a movie camera (1929) 5/5 completely exciting & enjoyable, &, for a movie that's coming up on its 90th anniversary, very contemporary in style & pace. i'm going to try to track down some of the other versions with alternate soundtracks this coming weekend.
