Some have said the fanboys don't matter, but, as fanboys are often the most likely to go back to the theater to see a Star Wars movie multiple times, it seems they do matter. First Tuesday reciepts are down 42% from The Force Awakens.

V 's gross receipts adjusted for inflation were $704.2M. IV did $1.3B adjusted for inflation.

VIII will do the same vis-a-vis VII. It will make about half of what the last one did.

,
,
,

I saw it and I liked it a LOT! as others have said it doesn't 'feel' much like Star Wars!

I did not like how Luke was used. I did not like the new powers we saw. I thought that R2 was underused... and Yoda looked like crap!

Overall the pacing was fine. I was with a 10-year-old with major ADHD and he sat and watched it all with no problems. He said he wanted to see it again.

So Luke refuses to help or train Rey. But R2 convinces which was sweet... but wait... Luke seemed to understand R2's language! What? that is silly.

Also odd... Leia's ship is hit and she is sucked into space but uses the force to pull herself (not really flying) into the ship... I thought that was a stretch!

Also: Fin and Rose go off on a mission that was as far as I can tell totally worthless and not very believable. In fact, it ends up costing the Resistance a great number of loses. The entire subplot was worthless and should have never made it to shooting.

Oh and on the island, Yoda shows up and he looks horrible... he makes the original TPM one look great... and the ghost effect seemed to be off too... but whatever...

But then Luke shows and wait why did he dye his beard? Oh he was not really there... another very odd choice and a new power that seems to me to be not at all reasonable.

But then Luke becomes one with the force and the few remaining people escape.

Then at the very end a Boy, back on the plant Fin and Rose go to, seems to use the force to pick up a broom...

Luke has always understood Artoo. Think back to when they were both on Dagobah, for example.

I thought the pacing was fine until Finn and Rose go to the casino-planet; that was an utter waste
of time like you said it was.

I liked Artoo manipulating Luke into training Rey; but I did not like how brattily Luke refused to
teach her. He was acting like a dumb guy instead of a Jedi.

The little boy looking out into the night sky whilst using the force to grab a broom after listening
to stories of Luke Skywalker was the best part of the movie . . . I have goosebumps as I'm typing
this!

I gave the movie a B as I was leaving the theatre. I downgraded it to a B- by the time I got home.
After speaking with a friend who's in showbusiness this morning, I'm giving the flick a C+.

Luke did not know what R2 was saying in Empire. He had a computer in his ship that translated for him. He even as to R2 when they first get to Dagobah "If your saying that coming here was a bad idea, I'm beginning to agree with you".

I thought it was pretty good. Similar to what James Whale did in BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

The film canon itself is mostly adhered to. People are "talked of" having this and that force ability...which is seemingly legendary. I can imagine that Luke "in (self imposed) exile" would have had his ties to his family and been meditating if not participating in their actions over the time anyways.... maybe he just learned something lone forgotten or suggested. Maybe it was that noxious, potent green lactose?

Either way...Rian managed to adhere to Lucas's method of interspersing real time issues under the cover of the fantasy dirge... Weaponization, merchants, wealth, lies, manipulations, all while clearly pointing the finger at the who's.... (America.. as I'd said when I first saw the trailer "eons"(?)ago.... "Oh great (sigh).... they're doing the American flag bit")

yes, the sandy desert of warfare = USA.

And if it wasn't BIG and SUBTLE enough... they even had 13, THIRTEEN flagships resisting...

(which is ludicrous if you study "history".. cause the native people were decimated and the 13 initial colonies weren't necessarily about....oh...well... nevermind... this'll cause backlash again)

....either way, as hinted with throwing out the ONENESS of the force (they really didn't, Luke just suggests that its selfish and arrogant to think they should be the only wielders of it)they hint at "out of many, one" etc and all that. Contemporizing stuff... just like the "body politic usurped and manipulated by aggressors" (Bush) in AOTC..

I've got to keep it simple and short thanks to the page's time out issues and the fact that I can't cut and paste this entire thing from an outside source....

THe film dragged in the middle.. (or it could have been the heavy work potluck breakfast I had an hour earlier)..and I even took a minute nod out during "Rey's" EMpire "know thyself" scene.... Been there done that.

I though there were too many instances of thrown in humor/pastiche... but I guess that's what you do now... make ample laughs to keep the kids awake. (but doesn't that also detract from the story?)

Favorite one was the Iron... I totally was hoping they'd do that once I saw it...and the payoff was great. Sadly, I think I was the only one who laughed in the theater... I think it went over their head.. that it was a dig at the series itself..

Luke nursing on alien breastmilk? Very odd.. but considering he was an exiled hermit ....he probably plugs those same creatures at night...u never know.

Maybe it's hallucinogenic.

EIther way it was an interesting film.

I feel for the other person who said "What the hell is Chewbacca even doin in this film anyways???".... You have a point... except maybe he wants revenge for Han. That's all I can muster. Either that or he's getting paid.

CONS:

Rey: Still a terrible actress
Conmander Art History Teacher Hipster Pseudo Lezzie: I didn't like her.
I saw the kamikaze thing coming...and I'm glad they did that. But I get it... chalk it up to fem dom. Nice and a bit pandering....especially the extended hand holding... Not sure if Carrie was on board with that...but she'd probably get a kick out of the suggested bit that it'd be useful in future film reels about lesbians.
BB-8.... probably couldn't have gotten INTO that AT ST...I would have thought he/she/it would have merely just hacked into their systems and done it remotely.

TOO MUCH MAZ KANATA: Am I the only one who hates this character? This stupid Orange Yoda piece of CGI drivel that serves to conveniently tied up loose ends is the worst character since the COUGHING semi mech "Grievous"...her scene in this film makes me fear they're trudging into godawful "japanimation" zones... ugh.

SPACE "BOMBERS" WOULDN'T FUNCTION WITHOUT EXCEPTIONAL GRAVITY. (period)

Same goes for when "admiral Hold-o" takes down the fleet... those fires would extinguish rapidly.

***THESE STUPID DICKENSIAN NAMES FOR EVERYBODY!!!!*** STOP IT!!!***

while it used to be reserved for the Sith and "baddies" this is now extending to stupid names like

Admiral Holdo = Admiral Holds Own... She holds her own... GUUUUURRL POWER!!
Kylo Ren = bastardized STAR WARS ANAGRAM = KNY LORE = Knight's Lore = His reverence for the esteem of the old Jedi Knights/possibly the continuing saga with Luke's Saber coming out in the next episode as gay.
Maz Kanata = Bastardized Anagram time again = Ma's Kantana = CANTINA (bar owner) = lazy writing

REY= LIGHT/RAY

What next? = Jess Kurray? (courageous?)
Bullquent Allishormo? = QUestionable Hormones the FIRST PANDERING LGBT STAR WARS CHARACTER!.....

Stil it's a better name than the blatant = Dickpuss.

in other fun... Joseph Gorden Levitt... gets his fun with a voice portrayal of "Slowen Lo"....er jokingly "Swollen, Low"

Anyways... I don't have time to delve further.

BUT(!!) I think it'd be refreshing to have a character named "Vinnie"

I can't decide if the return of puppet Yoda is good or bad... I think his jaw was too fat... other than that it was very good... I enjoyed that bit of humor and "letting go"... It seemed sensible.

I'd give it a B+... it entertained me... BUT it did have a terrible arc.
The film hit its peak in the 3rd quarter. Didn't finish strong.

Since everybody else is doing it:

^ Just on the whole space physics bit. Star Wars has never been good at that but the space bombers part is not a problem as the dreadnought was hovering (not in orbit), which is a technology that all Star Wars vehicles have long been established to have, above the planet of D’qar so the bombs would free fall towards the planet.

Mark Hamill's reaction to Luke Skywalker in TLJ, from Huffington Post:

-

"Jedis dont give up. I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference, but it's not my story anymore. I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he's Jake Skywalker, he's not my Luke Skywalker."

-

This is what the "silly nerds" are complaining about. It's not just goofy guys who are claiming their childhood was stolen...even the actor had serious misgivings, that Johnson was crapping all over decades of established SW lore. That wasnt my issue with the movie (I liked it, just not the direction the saga is headed in), but it is a very legitimate gripe.

But why should Luke Skywalker be immune from feeling what other people might feel. I think in this instance, Mark Hamill is wrong. No character should be completely above feelings of this nature. Not even Luke Skywalker. The fact he was once a great hero only means that he had further to fall. When he fails, he really feels it. Doubts creep in and he'd think "am I really as good as I thought I was" and with those feelings floating around in his head, he could have easily followed in his father's footsteps. It makes sense he would shut himself off to avoid that kind of downfall. He's afraid of failure. Fear leads to anger which leads to the dark side. I can't remember the full quote but Yoda said something like that to Anakin in Episode 2, I think.

I know why a lot of people would be unhappy with how Luke ended up. To be honest, when I heard they were doing 3 more movies with the original cast I was hoping they would play it safe and turn it into a big nostalgia fest. Han would be playing the loveable rogue, Leia would be the strong force for good in his life and that Luke would be the main hero. The fact that they are taking some risks like killing Han, having Luke be partially responsible for the villains actions and shutting himself away because of it and introducing new force powers is a good thing. Things are less predictable and I think they've set up the final part perfectly. You literally can't tell what's going to happen next.

Frankly I was more upset when they killed Han Solo.

I get where Mark Hammil is coming from but I interpreted Luke's bitterness as stemming from his idealism. He is right that Luke was always optimistic but when the dark side surfaced yet again within his family right under his nose it may have been the last straw that caused Luke to withdraw. I can't think of any other motivation that Rian may have had in mind for taking that direction.

It seems that the main thing Disney has accomplished so far is to remove every strong character that was key to the foundation of Star Wars but Im not sure what purpose that serves? The uncertainty of many fans will stem from the fact that the Disney-esque films have thus far failed to replace the core characters with equally strong new personalities. Neither Rey, Kylo or Finn have lived up to the personas of Luke, Leia or Han, etc. Hell BB8 doesn't even live up to R2D2, I already mentioned the Voldemort-like characature of Snoke. lol

Shit made me miss General Grevious, I kid you not! lol

That's why I can't get into this stuff on a fanboy level. Even Mark Hamill implied that he eventually went along with the program because it serves the bottom line and we all know what that is.

To my mind, the notion of desiring to kill your own nephew is indeed a dark dark gutter level conflict within Luke's psyche that part of his self imposed exile only made sense TO ME with that reveal.

It's Leia abd Han's child. He WANTED to kill him. IMAGINE THE AWKWARD DISCUSSION AT THAT DINNER!

So, Ben.....how was Jedi-camp? HOW'S MY BROTHER TREATING YOU?

Imagine THAT situation coming from a hero and bastion of righteousness in the family and THEN tell me there wasn't going to be a fractious conflict within.

His absence made sense after all that. ...but TFA is still a cheap teasing piece of shit film.

If Luke was missing and didn't want to be discovered and was prepared to die....why would he go to the MOST IDEAL SITE. .....the ANCIENT JEDI TEMPLE?

FOR FUCKS SAKE IT'S IN A QUADRANT THAT'S CONVENIENTLY *MISSING* FROM A MAP OF THE TEST OF THE WELL KNOWN GALAXY.

If I WERE in THAT UNIVERSE and was above a slave. ..then my knowledge would REALLY REALLY EASILY TELL ME THAT****OHHHH....THAT'S THE RUMORED ANCIENT REALM OF THE JEDI...

M.yeah. ...he's probably there.

Nope. No chance of finding him.

It's only a bit piece missing from a space map that indicates a section where he's at why bother ? It could be he's NOT THERE....why bother.

If we're eliminating Jedi. ...why bother going to their HISTORICAL ANCIENT SITE....

**then again. ..maybe this wasn't known to anybody else. But Kylo as a trainee would have known....= PLOT HOLE

Further proof that THE FORCE AWAKENS is a piece of shit.

I'm right there with you guys, really didnt have a problem with the portrayal of Luke Skywalker in TLJ...I can see why he went into hiding. The only issue I had is that the Luke I know would have left with Rey, especially after she gave him the exact same argument that Luke gave folks in ROTJ....that there was still good in Vader (Kylo), and that he could be saved. How could Luke forget that? Still...I didnt have that much of a problem with it.

-

My problem is that I didnt realize that Disney is using this trilogy to tie up and end the Skywalker saga. Apparently, their plan was to focus on each of the original trilogy characters....TFA focused on Han Solo, TLJ focused on Luke, and Ep IX was supposed to focus on Leia, and then the Skywalker family is completely gone from SW, the new trilogy that Rian Johnson has signed on for is a SW story that has nothing to do with the Skywalkers. NO THANK YOU! disbelief Being a fanboy myself, who spent a lot of money collecting every SW book in the 90s/00s, who read the story of Han and Leia's twins, of Luke's son Ben....to see Disney go in a completely diffferent direction breaks my heart. I can understand maybe tweaking the story a bit, not doing exactly what happened in the expanded universe novels, but to completely shut down the Skywalker story....as Vader said in ROTS...."NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

I'm not exactly a fangirl or anything but I agree with the sentiment. I would rather Star Wars movies continue to focus on the Skywalker family too. I don't like when movie seires' focus on newer characters. Independence Day 2 suffered a lot for spending too much time with new characters instead of just letting Jeff Goldblum run wild. The Expendables 3 left Stallone, Schwarzenegger and co to the side so they could promote Rhonda Rousey and Chris Hemsworths brother, and there are lots of other examples of this. It's like the filmmakers forget what made the original movies so popular.

In the case of Star Wars though, I think it makes sense to end the Skywalker saga, as much as I don't like it. 9 movies dedicated to them is probably enough. The universe is a big place. There has to be more than one important family of Jedis.

It’s fine if they end the skywalker saga .. it’s just that cramming these fanal 3 movies with go nowhere stories focusing on the pretty boring noobs ruins the actual good stuff .. btw both kylo and rey are skywalkers so they aren’t actually ending the skywalker story .. tried rewatching a cam vid the other day and was really enjoying it till the las vegas planet scene at which point it got worse than the prequels and i had to turn it off ... kylo is great .. rey is ok .. the rest of the noobs are awful and pointless .. bb8 needs a solid punting

LOL, aww, poor BB-8. I think Kylo should have kept his mask on. He doesn't really look all that threatening without it. Rey is alright, I think. I'm not a big fan of Finn to be honest. I'd like to see more of Poe. I think his character has been very underwritten in the two movies so far. As much as I love the original characters I think their inclusion is probably to the detriment of the movie. The newer characters aren't given enough time to shine. With Luke and Han dead and Leia not appearing in Episode 9 maybe they'll be forced (see what I did there) to focus more on Poe and co.

Although, as much as I really liked Episode 7 and 8, I'm more looking forward to the Obi Wan Kenobi movie.

i said on my other thread - i thought the low for me was yoda s appearance ... cant they make that yoda thing look half decent ???? sad

i agree with alot of what has been said .... i was kinda left with the feeling that ... wow ... i got so UP for this movie and they worked on it for so long ... and this is what they came up with ???

i think if Luke as a charactor was going to go away to a planet and be like that .... i think they would have thought more into it ... and why he was there .... instead of just being a hermit ... maybe make it that he was trying to come up with a way to defeat snoke ....

but in the end the snoke demise is kinda silly ... but a surprise and i think that is why we go to movies .... now Kylo is in charge etc ... wink

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

They returned to the Yoda puppet look because when they made him CGI in the prequels, people complained. It seems that no matter what they do with Star Wars, people will always complain.

I thought Snoke was going to be the big villain of this trilogy and even though I was quite looking forward to finding out more about him, it always seemed like he was too similar to Palpatine. When they killed him off I was genuinely shocked. In a good way. The Force Awakens was criticised for being too similar to the original and now The Last Jedi is being criticised for shaking things up. Like I said, people will always complain.

Things are set up nicely now though for Episode 9, I think. Rey's parentage is still a topic for debate and I have a feeling that she'll end up being related to Obi Wan, which could plant the seed for his spin off. Maybe she's his granddaughter or something. Maybe even give Ewan McGregor a little force ghost cameo. Even if her parents were nobodies, her grandparents might be related to the overall story. I actually hope that Kylo was telling the truth though and she's completely separate from the lineage of the Skywalkers, Kenobi's etc.
Finn and Rose had some nice scenes together which made me actually care about his character. Rey and Poe seem like a good match too.
