I've spent Christmas by myself (sans 2 or 3 instances) for the past twenty years. I have no real tradition other than trying my best to not be bored out of my skull. My roommate goes home for the holiday (90 miles away for 24 hours or so usually). None of my family has ever flown into NY to see me at all, ever, much less on a holiday. (They'll fly to goddamn Japan to see a step-sibling and his wife & kid, but you know the single children don't get that honor.)

As far as food, I don't think we ever had traditions with food. The big thing, when I was a kid, was to go to everyone's house on Christmas Day. Then once I had a sibling, and two cousins, my mom and aunt decided to stay home. But we all met at the grandparents on Christmas Eve to open presents from each other. The presents at home were reserved for Christmas Day.

I remember thinking ham was more of a Christmas thing, whereas turkey was Thanksgiving. We had pecan pie, Mystery Pie, maybe a cake. Most of the bigger food makings were Thanksgiving. Not that we didn't eat like pigs on Christmas. haha

Wish you were closer, you could hop on over.

Our Christmas used to be ham, then my step-dad died (13 years ago) and nothing has been the same. My mom still hosts Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, she hasn't decided to give that up yet.

We used to go over to my Grandmothers every Christmas Eve, since she has passed I usually have Christmas Eve at my house for my father in law, because he is by himself. This year we are going out to dinner on Christmas Eve, and having Christmas with the father in law on the 23rd.

2 of my kids have gotten married so they have to split the holidays up, so that leaves our Christmas Eve open for the 1st time that I can ever remember, we haven't got a thing to do.

My mom used to make sure we were all drinking Memosas on Christmas morning. Not sure why as she wasn't a big drinker. I keep that tradition up, usually means a nap for me as I'm not a big drinker either (I was when I was younger). My sister has incorporated my moms' oyster stuffing for Thanksgiving and Christmas but she lives in Portland.

.

My wife and her family don't have any traditions like that but an amazing meal is always a staple. Playing with my niece and nephew with their new toys is my favorite thing to do. Trying not to talk politics or anything that could start an argument.

.

My wife always insists on opening a present on Christmas eve and I wasn't raised that way, you wait until Christmas. I always give in because my wife makes me laugh, she's worse than a little kid with the pleading and begging to open ONE present...LOL

.

I just appreciate being around family and friends (if possible). With my people being all over the country, it's usually a day of nice phone calls to everyone I miss.

.

Merry Christmas Org! grouphug

Well it's traditional to try a do a different main dish. Duck, plank wild salmon, purple sweet potato pie (did not like at all). This year the difference won't focus on food.

Duck is delicious. It's all dark meat, so if you like a chicken leg or thigh, you're in the same wheelhouse with a duck. The key is to roast it on a rack in the pan. It's very oily, and you want a lot of that fat to drip off during the roasting process. If you set it in the pan like you might do with a turkey or chicken, it'll be sitting in its own juices a lot. Duck fat, when clarified and stored, is used for a lot of things. But I wouldn't want my duck swimming in it before dinner.

The only fowl I like is chicken and turkey. My dad used to go quail hunting, yuk...no thank you. Deer meat I can't stand either. My kids like fried squirrel and fried rabbit. ill

^Gosh that makes it look like we live in the backwoods. lol

Haven't fully fleshed it out yet but trying to include all the family.

I'm moving towards eventually doing stuff with the family around Christmas but doing my own personal things on the day.

For years I would rewatch guilty pleasures of christmas specials I enjoyed as a child or re-read books I liked when younger related to the holidays...

Then I made friends. And you guys filled in the blanks for what we do.

Oh and I will totally be that 80 year old with a cane waiting for home alone to air lol Got a problem? I'll whoop you with my cane! lol
