I would never buy or rent or check out a DVD unless it’s the only way an old movie (or more likely an old TV show) could be collected. I only get blu-rays or stream because a DVD on a good screen looks a bit soft focus and messed up. Everything, even your local car dealer commercials went HD years ago! DVD resolution: 720 x 480 at best, but sometimes 640 x 480. Blu-ray: 1920 x 1080 and now there are 4K discs (but you need a 4K player and 4K TV to see it). 4K is 3840 × 2160 and up. This is great if you have a huge screen to watch stuff on. Or sit really really close, lol. I still have my laserdisc player!

I've never gotten involved in Blue-Rays vs HD DVD. If your lucky the classic movies you like have been restored. If you rip your own movies, there's software out their to tweak the ripped DVD. I've found 52' inch 1080P Samsung non-smart-TV's at Best Buy in LA two years ago, I bought a couple. I'm not down with smart TVs so I doubt if I'll ever own a 2k / 4k TV, I don't see the necessity.

Huh? HD DVD was discontinued because blu-rays took off many many years ago. There is no such war, is there?

I recently had to put my own homemade movie to DVD (forced to instead of blu-ray) because horror bloggers might not have blu-ray players. It made my movie look shitty, it lost so much quality. I wish I had taken the trouble to artificially sharpen them before the discs went out to reviewers.

Nope HD DVD's are still being produce, just purchased "Hidden Figures" (6 bucks) 48hrs ago. My thoughts about one format vs the other.... was a statement based on my own personal taste, I'm indifferent. All of my movies are ripped and then moved onto my server.

Can you post a link to an HD DVD being sold, like Hidden Figures? I don't see anything.

That link led to a blu-ray... not an HD DVD. You said you have an HD DVD (that is not a blu-ray). I can show you a picture of an HD DVD. I have one from back in 2007.

Talke about confusion lol Yes, I bought a DVD... but since you only buy Blue-Ray I also notws sellers sold Blue-Ray. If you go down the eBay listings DVD and Blue-Ray are offered for sale. I know the difference between Blue-Ray & DVD. biggrin

P.S. DVD's are still a billion dollar plus sellers. So this notion that Blue-Ray is the only thing that can be bought.... If you shop a Wal-Mart, Big Lots, and/or the Dollar Stores still stock DVD's. Big Lots and Dollar Stores, that's all they sale are DVD's.

I see you thought HD DVD and DVD were the same thing. They are not. DVDs are SD resolution, not HD. 720 x 420 pixels at most. HD DVD ws equivalent to blu-rays at 1920 x 1080 but they died out years ago and werre discontinued.

I'm saying Blu-ray is the only SMART thing to buy.

Since most LPs come with a digital download on the side these days, if I feel I need a physical copy of something and it's available on vinyl, that's what I do. (I remember the days when, if you still bought vinyl, you had to rip it yourself.)

CDs (unless they likewise include a digital download) are useless to me because I do not have a disc drive on my computer.

externa lCD/ DVD drive, problem solved.

Exactly what I used before my computer crashed 2 years ago and I wound up buying a

refurbished computer with a DVD drive so I hardly use it. I haven't ripped vinyl in a long time because I've gotten spoiled with Spotify which has a huge collection of old R&B. I used to rip vinyl and then burn it with the external DVD drive.

Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Convenience absolutely, but what is lost and/or gain for that convenience.? The Internet is a bill, some streaming services have a pay only option, some have a free version, and some offer a very limited free option. When things get financially tight what goes first, cable and/or Internet services. So, if you drop one or both options (cable/Internet), what are you left with? A digital antenna and hopefully these folks have a vinyl/CD/DVD collection. smile wink

The ruling last week on Net Neutrality is really going to turn ever thing upside down. If you think At&t, Comcast, Direct TV, or Time Warner going to work with streaming services they don't control, think again. They either attempt to squash them or have these services pay through the butt. Once again what are you left with if you don't have hardware or a hard copy of DVD/DVD HD, Blue Ray or music digital and CD's?

The good news open source is attempting to offer intranet technology that allows you to streaming your shit without being connected to the Internet. This service is already viable but it still a bit cumbersome for those who aren't tech savvy. Dead Media Formats, that's what they said vinyl would become. wink
