Wow Rodeo, you just typed out the whole movie but somehow didn't like it?

.

It reminded me of a Cohen Brothers movie, it's not supposed to make sense but it's the characters you feel. Radical left turns and an ending that doesn't make sense is also their M.O.

.

I thought Frances was great and the whole movie had me laughing throughout but I like these types of movies.

Justice League (2017)

I enjoyed it, quite a bit. The sum of the parts was greater than the whole. Each of the main characters had quite a bit of appeal.

It started off very promising, but after the major "return" in the second act, it started to fall apart. The "big bad" was half-baked.

The main problem is that MCU beat them to the punch years ago, forcing DCEU to take some shortcuts in terms of character development. The new characters added some humor and light to the story. But for a variety of reasons, especially Whedon's involvement, it was horribly derivative of The Avengers.

Worth a watch to see my favorite superhero ever do his thing, but like Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice, significantly flawed.

Give Patty Jenkins the franchise and be done with it.

i called him morgan (2016) - documentary on lee morgan, gifted but hopelessly flawed trumpet player who was murdered by his wife in 1972. the entire doc is interesting, but the interview (recorded & played back on an old audio cassette) with helen, who saved morgan from homelessness & then killed him, elevates it to something quite special. 4/5

turkey shoot (1982) - pretty enjoyable australian exploitation. some decent gore effects, cute girls, & some bizarre moments. good fun. 3/5

howl's moving castle (2004) always nice to look at, & it definitely has plenty of very pleasant, whimsical moments, but overall i found it a bit rambling, even lethargic at times. 3.5/5

Lady Bird (2017) - In the early 2000s, an artistically-inclined seventeen year-old comes of age in Sacramento, California.

Critical acclaim for this is out of control. There's a scene near the end that doesn't ring true to me otherwise I'd rave about this like most other people. But it is indeed a very impressive directorial debut for Greta Gerwig. 4/5

I'd rate this the same, maybe a 4.5 . I'm trying to think of which scene doesn't ring true. Airport?

If you will, so will I

As you may have guessed, I will be watching this movie - right after Hell freezes over, or the Houston Texans win the Super Bowl. Whichever comes first, I guess.

But I did watch the trailer for this flick. Now, I am the first to say that trailers can be so misleading, but usually in my experience it's when they are trying to make a movie that really isn't funny seem to actually be funny. Those bastards!

What I saw in this trailer was another one of those "I'm a teenager who hates high school because no one understands me!!1!11!!" movies. Was that an accurate depiction of what this movie is about?

SIDE NOTE: Maybe I don't like "I'm a teenager who hates high school because no one understands me!!1!11!!" movies because I had a generally pleasant high school experience. Was I not the norm?

SIDE SIDE NOTE: God, I just made what I knew was going to be a huge mistake and read the wikipedia plot summary of this "movie". Holy crap, I want to jump off a bridge. Thank goodness I'm listening to the "Art Official Age" album and Prince just broke into his chipmunk voice on "Breakfast Can Wait". Yikes, I'm going to need more positivity though.

sennentunschi (2010) - fable-based swiss horror/thriller/oddity. there were quite a few moving parts here, & i'm not sure if i just got lost in details or if the movie didn't quite connect all the dots, but it didn't quite all come together for me. i still had a perfectly good time watching it. not great, but definitely recommendable for someone seeking something a bit left of centre. 3/5

better watch out - i couldn't help but fhink that i would have enjoyed this much more if the makers just would have gone full 'funny games.' it's really great fun regardless, & i could see it developing into a bit of a christmas horror-comedy classic. ought to be viewed as unspoiled as possible. 3.5/5

band aid (2017) 3/5 - couple try to fix their marriage by forming a band & setting their fights to songs. i found the first half to be great fun, chaotic & quirky & lovably goofy. it settled into a more conventional relationship drama on the second half, & i didn't like that half as much.

brigsby bear (2017) 3.5/5 - man tries to recreate the fake children's show that was made solely for him by the couple who held him captive as a kid. might be a bit lightweight, perhaps even a touch twee for some, but i thought it was completely charming. if james had become just a bit more fleshed out & real, i think it could have risen to the level of something truly great, but i still loved it for its unapologetically sentimental, good-natured feel.

Stagey, and Act I's a little slow. But Acts II & III are very, very good.

Will fail miserably in North America, because it's a dark, adult drama that forces the viewer to confront the less seemly aspects of the human psyche.

For reasons known only to the deepest parts of my highly-disturbed brain, last night I watched "Street Fighter".

Completely sober.

What was I thinking?!?

I know! It must have been the influx of stories about professional "gamers" on my favorite sports site! Deadspin made an egregious error a few months back and decided to feature stories about professional button-pushers on a real sports site.

Now as we all know and agree with completely, video gaming is not a sport. Is it hard? Yes. Is it popular? Yes. But so is baking a cake, yet cake-baking is definitely not a sport. And neither is "gaming".

COMMERCIAL BREAK, BROUGHT TO YOU BY ANOTHER OLD MAN WHO YELLS AT CLOUDS:

297.png

But enough comedy. The REAL point is that this intrusion by professional button-pushing for some reason convinced me to watch a movie based on button-pushing.

I came for the button-pushing, but I stayed for the ridiculousness!

For about the first hour of the movie, I thought it really had a chance to be The Worst Movie Of All Time. It's bad. It's hilariously bad. So-bad-that-it's-good bad. And it has Kylie Monologue! (Since I obviously cannot spell her last name, we'll just call her "Kylie".) Kylie is cute as a button!

Unfortunately, the movie breaks down in the final act, and becomes just another monument to stupidity. I did like the part where two big guys fought, knocking down evil Raul Julia's model city with "Godzilla" sound effects.

Also, I just learned that Raul Julia had stomach cancer when he did this flim. And he did it only at the urging of his two children. That's kind of sad but also kind of inspiring. And Julia was GREAT in this movie. I should watch some more Raul Julia movies.

There's no reason to break down the plot of this one. I'd say, watch it for the first hour and laugh/oogle at Kylie's cuteness, then go do something for a half hour, and then come back and watch the last three seconds, which is the cast all standing with their backs to the camera and then on cue, turning around and freezing this way:

rzdfAZU.gif

I give "Street Fighter" 4 Raul Julia Memories out of 10 Raul Julia Memories, but I give Raul Julia himself 10 Raul Julia Memories out of 10 Raul Julia Memories RIP, good sir!

the disaster artist - it may not play as well to people who don't know the source material, but this film had more genuine laughs for me than any movie i've seen in years that wasn't toni erdmann. & everyone else in the theatre seemed to enjoy it as much as i did. i also think it was a fun & mostly affectionate ode to misguided ambition. 4/5

Last night we watched the American classic "The Blues Brothers". One of the funniest movies ever! It's not so much that there are all that many memorable lines, as it is the way Ayckroyd and Belushi delivered those lines.

And the cast! Holy moley, everyone who was anyone was in that movie. Steven Spielberg was in that movie! Yes - acting! He was the tax collector at the end of the movie.

Here is everyone that is cool who was in the movie:

Dan Ayckroyd; John Belushi; Carrie Fisher; Ray Charles; Cab Calloway; Steve Cropper (the Funkiest White Man in America, in case you were wondering who is funkier than me); John Lee Hooker; James Brown; Aretha Franklin; John Candy; Steve Lawrence; Peewee Freaking Herman; Henry Gibson; Frank Oz; Joe Walsh; Charles Napier; Chaka Kahn Chaka Kahan; John Landis; and De'voreaux White - yes, Argyle himself! Also, lots of musicians with "middle names" like Donald "Duck" Dunn; Matt "Guitar" Murphy; Calvin "Fuzz" Jones; Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson; and Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin.

I dare you to find another movie with so many cool people in it. I double dog dare you!

I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU.

You know what else rocks about this movie? EVERYTHING THEY DESTROYED. This film was made before CGI ruined movies. So every piece of destruction you see actually happened. They must have crashed 100 cars! They wrecked an entire mall! They destroyed Mayor Daley Plaza! That is so much better than all the fake CGI Star Wars crud you young people have to accept as "movie-making".

Here's a fun fact about almost all John Landis filmed productions. Somewhere in it, he will sneak in a reference to a non-existent film called "See You Next Wednesday". It references the last line spoken by astronaut Frank Poole to his parents in a videophone conversation in "2001: A Space Oddity".

I did not need wikipedia to know this, either. I first saw "See You Next Wednesday" in Landis's awesome debut movie, "Schlock". Then I saw it in "Kentucky Fried Movie". Then I saw it in "The Blues Brothers". Then I saw it in "An American Werewolf in London". Then I saw it in "Trading Places". Then I saw it in the video for "Thriller". Then I kind of stopped watching Landis movies and so I didn't notice it in anything else - until it was in "Sharknado 5", of all things. That was a horrible movie. But I got the joke!

The music in this movie is just awesome. As my son pointed out, the reason the movie is so long is that every song features its full performance. But that's the way it should be, when you have good music. Which means, of course, that if you are making a movie set in the '90's, you should have no soundtrack at all.

I know you can see "The Blues Brothers" almost any day of the week on TBS or Spike of Viceland but not on El Rey. Do yourself a favor - watch it on a movie channel or on demand. Somewhere with no commercials and all the cursing intact.

"The Blues Brothers" gets 10 Destroyed Mayor Daley Plazas out of 10 Destroyed Mayor Daley Plazas.

columbus (2017) - 5/5 quiet, tranquil, simple story about a couple of people at different points in their lives getting to know each other. really reminded me of kelly reichardt's little character studies & in particular reminded me of last year's paterson. at this point, i'd say i like paterson more than this, mainly because i liked that movie's poetry-obsessed bus driver more than columbus's architecture-obsessed directionless student. but i think both movies are perfect gems.

at minimum, i'd recommend viewing one of the 'room' clip summaries floating around youtube. there are a few that give you the main scenes in 8 minutes or so, and i think that's really all you need to prepare you for the disaster artist.

i haven't witnessed this, but i've heard that most 'room' screenings involve a lot of audience participation - people yelling lines, throwing plastic cutlery at moments, etc - & are generally so raucous that you probably won't catch most of what's actually happening in the film. if you think that's something you'd enjoy, then i'd say go for it - but i don't think you need back to back screenings to enjoy the disaster artist itself. the yt clip summaries would adequately arm you, i think.
