AT THE OFFICE: Advice: How to deal with @-holes coming to work sick

This a-hole keeps coming in to work sick and hacking, and coughing etc. She's even got a wall dedicated to two sweaters and a ""blankey" nearby, as well as face wrap and scarf at her "cube"

Thing is, she HAS been coughing for nearly a month now. It was originally annoying since I don't sit direclty near her. However at a recent training sessionI acquired a horrible cough and lung pain that made me feel like I'd inhaled the contents of a hot car battery.... I seriously thought I was going to die if I let myself fall to sleep those weekend nights.

And then two weeks later there was another group training session at work....in a SMALLER office....in which two others got a cough, and I came down with horrible body aches...which left me feelling like i'd arm wrestled a bear.

What are the general guidelines for dealing with something like this without resulting reprisals, or parrying attacks of god knows what..?

1) This is a female

2) it is a CORPORATE work environment (PLENTY OF PAID TIME OFF - she should use it to get well)
3)... it is horribly inconsiderate to others, but

4) If this person is thin skinned, it could represent some debased accusation of harrassment etc..

because

5) Management has done nothing about her illness, despite others possibly having expressed disgust.

any suggestions?

Or get real serious and go:

All over everything.

I carry a packet in my purse. We are having a Hep B epidemic in my city right now, it's annoying to walk into a icky bathroom stall.

I don't think jobs can force you to go home but many are starting to do serious public service announcements that it is a very good idea to stay home when ill.

Jesus... that sounds horrifying..

THAT's one vaccination I've gotta sign up for.... ...funny how the WHO refers to "sex workers"..... why not just put it in laymen's terms... whores and manwhores....or is that not proper...due to monetary issues... prostitutes male and female...

ah yes.. a gray zone

Good idea on the wipes, though... But that doesn't cover airborne issues. I wasn't aware that employers couldn't tell someone to leave

Seriously, after that last cold you had, I'd start taking the defensive since you can't convince that co-worker to do what's right.

I'm tired of getting poked with needles simply because people can't clean up behind themselves.

Actually, it is a crisis right now due to how the homeless are being pushed out of certain areas where they can get somekind of sanitation needs fulfilled and now it's crossing over into the general pop.

At my job you have to find someone to work for you even when you are sick. Some of my employees who have worked under 6 months dont even have vacation / sick time so they don't get paid for being sick before that. If this person has sick time they need to use it right away. Gross!

EXACTLY!...

NOw... instead... we've got a bunch of "covertly sick" people around now... fermenting... while the germ spreads.

I've recovered a bit... but now, unless I'm checking my temp every hour... it's possible I'm still carrying the germ.

It all starts with one asshole... then it spreads.

Likewise, what you mentioned. I could understand if it was a "temp" worker, bound by red tape from taking time off (or risk unemployment)...but this is a person who's been with the company over 4 years. I believe it's been noted by management....just overheard her say she's got "allergies"

(which this most definitely was not).... the cough has reduced on her end, but it's spreading...

So.. those of you in good health. Gargle. wash. eat some garlic, onions, wash things away with some whisky here and there.... antiseptic..wash your face with paint thinner..... lol

.... be healthy!

RodeoSchro

Do 100 push-ups every morning and it will be almost impossible for you to get sick.

I say "almost" because doing 100 push-ups every morning kept me from getting sick for nearly two years, but last week Typhoid Mary a/k/a My Favorite Mother-In-Law hit me with some upper respiratory infection that even push-ups couldn't beat.

But I will say that I recovered faster and better than I used to whenever I got this junk. Push-ups rule!

i once worked in an office that was so cold my colleagues and i had to actually wear down vests and gloves in order to keep warm. later it turned out that the thermostat was malfunctioning and blowing cold air on our heads during the winter months. at that place we ALL got sick when one person got sick. and because we were short-staffed, we either had to come in and work or find a huge pile of work waiting when we got back. no-win.

if your colleague sits under an air duct that hasn't been cleaned for a decade, she might be having an allergic reaction to whatever is blowing down on her head. ick.

right now where i live we are having an outbreak of drug-resistant, airborne tuberculosis in town (spread by coughing and sneezing), so who knows what is wrong with your co-worker? she should stay home, go to a doctor, and take care of herself.

not sure how you would encourage her to do this. personally, i would suggest that you address the matter through your supervisor, rather than confronting her directly. otherwise, wear a face mask (available at drugstores) whenever you are exposed to her, and if you share ofice equipment with her disinfect everything before you touch it. good luck and stay well!

If she can work she is not that sick right?

Feels like you are overeacting, just because you don't like it doesn't mean she should stay home.

Maybe focus on your work and not on her?

U seem to be ignoring the part where 3 of 4 other people acquired the illness during a two day training session. 2 got coughs, I got body aches.

That should be taken care of at home.

End results... nearly a week later.. the cough has spread to an additional 4 people in 20 feet each way....with a germ epicenter of her nasty ass...

Not "focusing" on her... trying to avoid her. It's just sensible to not spread an infection/cold/flu etc when you're feverish and hacking all day.

as for working...not sure about her production numbers and how well that's going. That's something for management
