SNL's faux commercial for a Wes Anderson horror movie was pitch perfect. It came with a NYTimes quote, "You had us at Wes Anderson."

But yeah, that's a fair take. I really enjoy his movies, the best of which nail the landing (imo, Moonrise, Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic). I've never gone overboard over any of them though.

Wes Anderson films are very exact in every little detail, in every little camera movement. It's all very wonderfully purposeful in his distinct artistic vision.

Hunt for the Widerpeople was great fun, but it could have been a shot by any sitcom director. In my opinion.

fair point, there's certainly a level of craftsmanship in anderson movies that's very rare. in that sense, there's an interestng comparison to the kind of painstaking care in dunkirk. obviously completely different, yet i think both movies & both directors have a deep appeal to people who care for craft of film-making.

i've just never felt a real resonance when i watch anderson films, if that not too douchey a way of saying it, whereas with paddington or hunt..., i got a real satisfaction, a feeling of a complete story well told.

Yeah and you can add Kubrick to that list. They certainly do not feel free-form of spontaneous. They're a different Animal.


I think early Speilberg or Hitchcock are the most well rounded directors who can balance the fine line of the "art" and "craftsmanship" with the relaxed and casual (to our eye) storytelling.

It was as if you got a bunch of 50 year old execs and asked them to write something "HIP" ...funky fresh....with it, ma brotha. Fo shizzle.

Nobody expected anything good from another piece of crap like "Sausage Party" (how does this guy's films even continue to be made??)

...but suicide squad was God-awful.... geez...even got me thinking of that horrible ending with the gyrating mess of CGI turqoise enchantress...the moronic "girl power" condescending lines "you pussy!" (to a guy...WOW! Don't go there sister!)

The generic Prune faces.... the fact that there was no epic battle scene (probably more removed Joker stuff) and that the battle vs the prunes could not have more Will Smith reshoots to be turned into a close up action scene (with intercuts)....[if you'll notice, they're all secondary pulled back shots....meaning they were not intended to be featured]

I was pulling that "film" apart as I watched it... the girlfriend wanted to see it... (it figures)... what a piece of crap. I'll probably never get over how bad that film was and how frightened I am of the public that they enjoyed it.

Then again... Trump got elected.

been wanting to re-watch this one for a long time. it doesn't disappoint. each character from the large cast is introduced perfectly, eliminating the need for much character development; which in turn contributes to an implied franticness that i gratefully didn't feel as a viewer. an underrated gem and another stellar performance from michael keaton. 4.5/5.



on the recommendation of my 10 year old son. plenty of laugh out loud moments. mark wahlberg is such a good comedic performer. effectively touches on a lot issues that would come across as overly sentimental outside the comedy genre. 4.5/5.




wow. even with the dark tone, the culture and community on display really illustrates why western culture is so sick. but, yeah, what a great movie. kind of makes me interested in reading/watching 'death of a salesman' (which i haven't experienced since high school) to better understand what allusions/references i might've missed. 5/5.

i thought that movie was truly great. have you seen 'a separation' or 'the past' (also by farhadi)? if not, i think you'll find them very much worth watching. sexton will back me up on this, i'm pretty sure.

i'm truly bummed tonight. i went down to the local theatre expecting to see 'the red turtle' (it clearly shows it scheduled for this evening when you search for local movies through google) only to find no films playing tonight due to the venue being taken over by the fringe festival. harrumph.

i did watch the john hurt/richard burton version of 1984 last night, inspired by finishing thomas ricks' joint biography of churchill & orwell earlier this week (a truly great read imo - highly recommended). it's been quite a few years since i read the novel, but the film is pretty faithful to the book as far as i recall. it's fine, well acted & appropriately dour & bleak & downcast, worth a watch by all means, but it's no replacement for the book, of course.

it almost seems odd that no one has taken another try at developing a filmed version of 1984, given the way the novel perpetually stays in the public consciousness. perhaps it's too engrained, too established in culture - unlike, say 'the man in the high castle.' a lot of people love pk dick, of course (i'm one of them) but you can take liberties using that novel as source material in a way one likely couldn't with 1984.

I absolutely agree, every movie by Asghar Farhadi I've seen I found to be extremely powerful.

Lady Macbeth (2016) - Set in 19th century rural England, young bride who has been sold into marriage to a middle-aged man discovers an unstoppable desire within herself as she enters into an affair with a worker on her estate.

Don't let the prim and proper-looking poster fool you, this movie is evil. It would be RodeoSchro's worst movie of the year if he saw it--even worse than Dunkirk. Twisted fare such as this appeals more to me, however. 3.5/5

A ponderous meditation on living, and searching for meaning, in the past. Somehow an hour of Casey Affleck in Charlie Brown's Halloween costume seemed affecting. Great summer counterprogramming. Watching Rooney Mara eat her rage by gorging a pie for 5 minutes was uncomfortable, but satisfying.

The Big Sick

That it's produced by Judd Apatow should tell you exactly what to expect.

I went to see it just because of it's great RT score. I went in mostly blind, just knowing it was based on a true story and I suggest you all do the same.

It's a funny/sad/culture-juxtaposing romcom about a young couple. One of which is a struggling stand-up comic.
It's a long movie too.

I think it's more cute than great. But a great lightweight movie to see if you're going to catch a film this weekend and don't want monsters and green screen.

Maudie (2016) - An arthritic Nova Scotia woman works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist and eventually becomes a beloved figure in the community.

I saw this primarliy for Sally Hawkins who is outstanding as the titular character. Ethan Hawke is very good as well as Maud's husband. Otherwise, this is a standard biopic. 3.5/5

barton fink 4/5 my third or fourth viewing, i think. i've never quite fallen for barton fink, certainly not the way i have for my favourite coens. it's stuffed with great dialogue and scenes, a lot of them courtesy of john goodman, and like all their best movies, it definitely rewards repeat watches, but it's never completely come together in a satisfying way for me the way fargo does, to use the most obvious example.
