I haven't seen many movies this year, but Wonder Woman is probably the best movie so far, and it's the best superhero movie since Captain America: Winter Soldier. I probably would rank it just behind The Dark Knight, Winter Soldier, the first Avengers movie, and tied with The Dark Knight Rises. And I say this as a huge Marvel movie fan.

Since I have seen none of the movies on your list, I will rate "Animal house" as the best movie of the year. Or any year, for that matter.

The actual first-run movies I've seen this year - along with my always-imaginative ratings - are:

Baywatch - one of Zac Efron's Painted-On Abs out of the six possible Zac Efron's Painted-On Abs

Why Him? - the bottom turd in the Japanese toilet that no one can flush because it's full of turds

Fist Fight - it gets 2.75 Happy Endings out of 5 Happy Endings. Which means, you'll laugh hard 40% of the time, and almost laugh hard 15% of the time but then your wife comes home unexpectedly

But we are going to see "Baby Driver" this weekend! The bar is pretty low so the chances are better than even that it will be the best new movie I've seen this year.

They do. The Beguiled, IANYN, etc. You have to look for it amongst the islly blockbusters but they are out there. Not as much because ppl dont go to them so they get not much advertising.

Why can't older people enjoy movies like Pirates of the Caribbean or Wonder Woman or whatever? There's no age limit for movies. A good movie is a good movie, regardless of age.

OK what is your age range you are talking about?? Honestly alot of the movies are from Generation X's child hood, Transformers/Smurfs. Wonder Woman is been around for over 70 years now.

Because they're old and old people don't like things like that. My mom and stepdad used to go to the cinema every Friday night but there's nothing they wanted to see at all this year.

I'm sure some old people like things like that. Just because you reach a certain age shouldn't detract from your sense of fun. The people who went to see the likes of Jaws, Star Wars and the Christopher Reeve Superman movies in the cinema are likely old now. If they enjoyed those movies when they were younger, why can't they enjoy Wonder Woman and other modern movies like that now?

Long long LONG overdue document... The best, by far, this year...
Saw "Wonder Woman" a couple of weeks ago and was nice for a chick-flick with stupid humour...
"Get Out" was predictable drivel with some funny shots...
Will be attending a 70mm screening of "Dunkirk" tonight and my guess is this will be the greatest cinematic experience this year...

That's just your parent's problem and absolutlely not general for old people...
My dad is 70 and loved "Wonder Woman" (he's as much a Superman fan as I am a Prince fan, so he's probably biased...) he really enjoyed "Split" as did I and both my parents even liked those "Baby Driver" and "Kong: Skull Island" garbage piece of shit movies... They hated "Alien: Covenant" though and called it a disgrace trying to go for that "Cthulhu feel"... I liked it and think it somewhat succeeded in it, maybe my H.P. Lovecraft isn't theirs... In the end it's all entertainment which is never age dependend... Either you like shit or you don't, at whatever age...

There used to be more variety so people that liked Mysteries, Crime Thrillers, non-R rated comedies, historical fiction, war movies etc could go on a regular basis. Now most movies are superhero or horror films.

They do......I'm 56 and have been a comic-book/sci-fi geek since my childhood. I'm so happy Marvel & DC characters are getting the right treatment on the big screen, thanks to technology.

The next three years are going to be insane (Thor/Ragnarok, Justice League, Star Wars, Avengers/Infinity War, Black Panther, The Batman, Godzilla/King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs Kong, etc.),,,,,,,doesn't get any better than that.

I wonder how much we shut each other down from realizing more by reducing others to the stereotypical worst of us?

Beyond never forgetting that spark that started us all or not expanding much beyond a childhood so deeply loved, if people are enjoying themselves, it would seem the perfect opportunity to be taught, not reject.

LOL. I can very much appreciate that.

Allow me to attempt a slightly different, less out-of-the-blue tact (not so bleeding philosophical). There are a lot of cool, really intelligent people to learn from around here on countless topics, even if much of the time it can be rather chaotic and demeaning.

There are still good non-action based movies being made that appeal to people who don't like super heroes, sci-fi, horror, action movies. Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Tarantino, Christopher Nolan etc have made some great movies over the last few years and they've got some great looking movies on the horizon. And there are lots of great, under the radar movies that's come out over the last 10 years. The problem is not that these movies aren't getting made, it's just that they're not advertised to the same degree as the bigger movies.

Remove the commas and you'd have a great title for a movie. It could be a mash-up of the actual movies. lol

i think it's true, and i believe this is pretty broadly acknowledged within the movie industry, that there has been something of a collapse in the 'mid-range' movie, much of that being attributable to the decline of the dvd/rental market. we're in a state where we see a large amount of enormous-scale, fairly safe, occasionally pandering blockbusters, and we still have a fairly good supply of sundance-ie independent stuff for those snobs among us, but there seems to be less of the midrange, adult, ambitious film.

compare that to the 70s, when we had that explosion of fairly daring, adventurous cinema that achieved critical and popular success. you don't have to reach too far to think of what i'm referring to - the conversation, taxi driver, terrence mallick, deer hunter, things like that. that was truly an era when bold films were being made by major studios, and put out there for a wide audience with pretty substantial success.

you could make a case that the decline was in place in the 80s and 90s, but even then you had the lynches & tarantinos of the world, not to mention the increasing popularity of world cinema in that era. i don't think it's a stretch to say that, akin to the stagnation, lack of innovation in music in the last 20 years, a similar effect has occured in movies. tyler cowen had an interview on the podcast econtalk recently where he touched on some of these issues, and it was a great listen for anyone who's interested.

there are what i'd call some good, worthwhile anomalies out there of course, my personal favourites being arrival last year, okja this year, but i really think you just have to look at film release schedules for this year and the last few years to see what seems to me to be a very clear trend. the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say.
