NASA to Announce New Astronaut Class on June 7

The new astronaut candidates were chosen from more than 18,300 people who submitted applications from December 2015 to February 2016, more than double the previous record of 8,000 set in 1978. U.S. citizens in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories Puerto Rico, Guam, and American Samoa applied for a chance to join NASA’s astronaut corps and take part in the nation’s human spaceflight program. Requirements to apply were U.S. citizenship, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) field and at least three years of related experience, or at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.

I thought about applying 10 or so years ago. I wish I had. According to an astronaut friend of mine, my chances would have been slim, since I was neither military nor did I have an advanced degree in engineering or physics.

But you know what they say - you always regret the things you DIDN'T do more than the things you did. I know that's true!

Condolences on not becoming an astronaut; congratulations on your son graduating college. Nice to have them back home again...if even for a brief moment.

Yeah noticed your absence but assumed you took a break until I saw the whole NASA application thing then it made me wonder if you signed up just for the education part of it even if you didn't qualify I'd imagine the challenge would be thrilling. The got several thousand applications but said only about 3 or 4 would actually qualify at the end of the whole training process, so obviously people are in it for the challenge. The whole timing of you mentioning the astronaut thing, then disappearing and then their selection process taking place sync'd perfectly.

And congratulations about your son.

Last night a friend took me for a ride in a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. Now I know what it must feel like to blast off in a rocket!

That was the fastest thing I've ever ridden in - and that includes a lot of private jets. WOW is that thing fast!

How fast was it? I've gotten up to 160mph in a 72 Trans Am with 5 people in it!

But I still gotta razz you for it being a Dodge.....like Al Bundy's car!!
