It depends on how long you're together. I was with my ex off and on for 10 years, ever since I was 14. Even though we're not together anymore I still consider him family.

Then there are people I'm related to who I don't consider to be family.

No...Boyfriends/Girlfriends are not considered family..it does not matter how long you been dating, if you don't have a RING then you're just "Company" that enjoys the benefits of Dating & Sex....Even saying I Love you does NOT Trump a RING...

Shit gets real when he/she buys a RING...So don't be so quick to introduce your Boyfriend/Girlfriend to your kids or family members....Wait and see how real it is...

We all have Dated people for weeks, months and it eventually ended...It was nice, they was nice, the Sex was Good, but you move on...That individual was NEVER family or like'family...

What if, like me, you don't acknowledge the "importance" of a RING and you view marriage as unnecessary and outdated?

I suppose it depends on your definition of family...

they can be 'considered' anything...

they are not.

when you have a fam with a bf/gf

it they become a part of YOUR fam

and your child is in the fam but

until there is 'the family name'

(the only reason to marry)

placed on erbody... it's just an

'immediate' and doesn't have to

be accepted by others outside of

that 'atomic family'...

folks tend to like 'considerin' themselves

all kinds of things in life. a rock will

never be a marshmellow no matter

what they taste like or how many

people go toothless thinkin they

marshmellows...

you are NOT...

I agree...to a certain extent. You can be in a relationship with someone for 4-5 years and the signficant other can be considered family, that is, if that person has been present at most family functions/events, etc. In fact, if you are dating someone long term but they aren't considered family, then something is very wrong, IMO. It depends. One would think that if you are close to your family, that you would bring your boyfriend/girlfriend around, so your family would become familiar with your signficant other and become "part of the family".

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Legally? No. Outside of that it's a personal preference, like ones pets or something. Legally, your dog doesn't inherit crap but you love em just as deeply as your kid, in some cases.

Word!

Your relatives determine whether your significant other is considered family or not. My significant other was invited to every family function, given gifts every Christmas and birthday, and was flat-out told they are family.

And marriage doesn't guarantee acceptance as a family member. One of my siblings married the equivalent of Satan, and that in-law was never treated as family. Being considered family is a privilege, not a right. nod

That's simply how you view it..It's not for me or anyone else to judge it...

Yeah, that's my point. Who you consider to be family depends on your definition of family. I don't think there's a definitive answer to the original question posed in this thread.

Girlfriends/Boyfriends you live together with are considered family legally to pretty much

And ALL of those Boyfriends are no longer in your Life, nor do they share your bed....They were never Family...They were temporary Boyfriends that you let go when the relationship was over...

None of them became your Common law Husband...

I'm not sure of all the legalities, I know Cali has had "common law" spouses on the books for a longtime, but again I'm not sure of all the legalities, as in who gets to make what decisions and so forth. Legally it's kind of iffy, but everything else is left up to personal decisions in my book. Now my family as a whole doesn't consider anyone an official member of the family until marriage, and/or other legalities have been officially taken care of first, then it can be a lifetime commitment if the "coming in" individual is willing to be part of the family which includes responsibilities and all, whether divorce is involved or not.

Depends for sure. My BF and I have been together for almost 4 years now. I definitely consider him family and sees me the same way. His mother treats me like family ,etc...
