Not to sound cynical or anything, but the "food" he wanted was probably alcohol-based. Either that or he was after drugs.

This is a hard one for me i feel i don't know if am doing right or wrong if a homeless person asks for money for food and will they spend it on food or alcohol. I just can't ignore someone looking cold and hungary and just walking past , i can't do that.

I had a similar situation happen to me. A young guy was standing outside the McDonald's and as I approached he said, "Ma'am, can you spare some change so I can get me something to eat?" I told him I didn't carry cash, but I would buy him whatever he wanted to eat. I asked him what he wanted, and he said, "Can you spare some change?" Again I told him I didn't have change, but I would buy him something. He said, "Naw, that's okay." I knew then that he was panhandling for drug money. Whenever I'm asked for money, depending on the person and circumstance, my reply is, "I'm sorry, but I don't carry cash." I don't mind helping the truely downtrodden, but I am not going to support a drug habit.

come on are you from out in the sticks? food is the easiest thing to get your hands on in this country. People wanting money usually have drug and alcohol problems. Here in Seattle these fuckers are off the chain. Personally, i don't like being bothered by anyone i don't know so it pisses me off when they bother me.

Can't say why he would do this unless he wanted the actual cash to buy stuff other than food. The main thing is that I wanted to say thank you for being so kind hearted. rose

i notice that people from mexico and people from smaller towns find it very fucking offensive for people to ask to be given something for nothing.

I always say "hey, I don't have cash was just gonna grab some lunch over there, can I grab you something?" Usually they are very thankful but if they say " I just want money" I just jog on.

This is not to dismiss a kind deed, but before I would just take it upon myself to buy someone food, I would ask what they prefer. Several reasons for that. One is because I try to leave intact the dignity of people down on their luck, so I will give them a choice when I can. Another is that even homeless people can have specific health issues that preclude certain diets. And yeah, I get that people think a homeless person should be grateful for whatever anyone tosses them, but I'm thinking of one specific old homeless man near me who is a brittle diabetic and sometimes the choice between starvation and medical emergency sucks. Lots of people buy him food that gets wasted because he can't eat it especially without proper storage (which would apply to anyone regardless of health issues when lots of people are willing to buy food only).

When I do have cash, though, either I can part with a certain amount or I can't, and I don't put a bit of energy into worrying and wondering what someone may do with that cash or whether someone is looking for a fix or just really needs a fresh pair of socks or some underwear without coming out and asking, "can you spare some change for clean underwear?"

^ All good points. I used to just buy a sandwich without asking but then thought the same so now I ask. True too that they need cash for more than just food and I guess it can come across as mistrusting but the truth is I never have cash as it's pretty cashless where I live and I always say I don't have any cash first so my food donation isn't obviously mistrusting.

I feel ok with this as most people I notice do give cash so they should be set for undies and extra strong cider.

I pretty much ignore them too. They're all over NYC. You can't take the subway without seeing a few of them walking up & down the aisle begging for money.

I'm from Sydney and we have many here

I came from a good place
But a because of a bad relationship I once ended up in a situation where I had nothing and because of this I cannot ignore what I not only see but also feel and understand

I am now fortunate enough to b able to give so if someone asks for food I give them food - this was the first time food was rejected and that surprised me

I never give them money - I give food clothing and even blankets

I give because I can and if it helps it makes me happy - I have no expectations of anyone

Maybe one day u will b there - how would u feel? What would u do? Where will u b if everyone ignores u?

Please don't ignor them it's cruel - u don't have to take them home or give them money - buy them a bottle of water or a coffee or a sandwich and then stand back and see the transformation from within 💜

Long time ago, instead of giving change I would pass out these cards that my job gave us. The cards had information of various local organizations that helped homeless people. Sometimes the person was gracious and took it and sometimes they were insulted.

Personally, I prefer giving my money to organzations I'm familiar with. Occasionally I'll just hand a stranger some spare change and not be concerned about what they'll do with it more for safety reasons though, because some can be a bit aggressive. But I'll always remember the panhandler that asked my for money for gas with some terribly sad story I gave him $5, I swear it was 3 years later I saw the same guy with the same story, and I asked him didn't I see him before and he just quickly walked away. From that point on I stopped worrying about the sob story attached, either I just give it and not worry about or I say no.

but true, those small chocolate eggs that would have melted in my car meant something to that man. Maybe the first bit of candy in a long time. I was glad I thought to offer it to him.
