What's your computing experience like?

..so, as yall know, I'm somewhat of a nerd, so....was just reflecting on computers today, what they were like when I was young, and the difference between them, like the entire experience - for work, for play, for games.... whatever. What is your opinion of today's computers and software? ....cuz, we all use them, right? (20 yrs back we DIDN'T - there was no Internet!). Do they crash? Are they easy to use? What are your peeves, and what would you change?? ...most importantly, if you were a KID today, what would your opinions of the thing be? Is it actually possible to USE Windoze on a day-to-day basis? like, for actually DOING stuff? didn't USE to be.... if you installed game A, game B might stop working, if you Uninstalled game C, game A might stop working,... if you went to website X you might get a virus...and so on - practically ANYTHING you do - the *slightest* button click here or there would Fuck Up Things. you're only supposed to do with it what Lord Bill has *designed* for you to. and not even that. what do yall think?

I never had a computer when I was growing up. We couldn't afford one. So what you never had, you never miss. I've got a laptop now but I use it exclusively for iTunes and charging my ipod (that's right, an ipod). So I think it's fair to say that I'm useless with computers. I know how to do what I do but anything else and I need my brother to help me. He's pretty good with that kind of stuff. What you say about kids using computers gets me thinking though. My little sister is 14 now and she's got this tablet thing. I do be looking at her flicking through all these apps and I'm thinking "wow, how times have changed". Kids growing up these days don't realise how lucky they are to have all this technology imprinted in their brains. I know some might say it's dangerous or whatever but if used in moderation, and for the right reasons, computers can be great educational tools that previous generations just didn't have access to.

By the way, I'm not as old as this post makes me out to be. smile

There was internet in 1997, because I was on it. It was in the public more readily starting in the mid 90s. (HTTP protocol was invented only around 1990 or so I think). In fact, my friend was on a very different version of the internet in the 80s, and it'd been around in colleges and government agencies for email & simpler transitions since the end of the 60s. Of course, that internet was very different from the one in the last 20 years.

My Mac has never crashed on me. I still feel like software is pushing the medium more than hardware. While there are faster processors, more RAM, springier keyboards, ergo-mice, etc, there's no real innovation in design. There are touch screens, and now thanks to Apple styluses are back (and apparently dongles & adapters out the ass too), but what innovation has there been in how we touch & operate computers? Tablets and phones are computers of course, but do people really sit down and write out evaluations, presentations, blog, edit movies & music, etc., in a fucking Galaxy Tab? The Surface is a bit more innovative with the detachable keyboard going from laptop to tablet in a hot second. But - it's Microsft, and I'm not thrilled with that. I also don't like Windows 7, 8, or 10. So my peeve would be how can we make using our laptops more innovative, native, and intuitive? Can we reinvent the keyboard? Do we need to?

I'm not a gamer beyond some Angry Birds Friends tournaments weekly on my iPad Air 2. In general, my Macbook works well for my purposes. I produce videos weekly on YouTube - including a cooking show, ABF videos, and vlogs. I also help other people put some things together sometimes. I've thought of updating to a Macbook Pro with more RAM, just to speed things up. And have more hard drive space. The Air is really meant to rival the Chromebook and similar cloud-ish computers.

And most times, I find Command (or CTRL on Windoze) Z is your best friend. It's the Undo function.

As a note about the keyboard, I've always been a keyboard guy. File, Save As. Tools, Whatever, Whatever. I learn the Alt or Control or Command for it, and I do that. It just lets me work way faster by not having to stop, get to my mouse, move the cursor into position, click, do something. It's seconds, but I can still be barreling through typing or coding or whatever else I'm doing if I can do it on the keyboard. Even if I can click tab twice to Post or whatever on a site, that's easier to me than clicking w/ the mouse pad.

I was on computers, learning BASIC in 1982 in high school. I was the master of the If-Then-GoTo loop! Never had one at home, but I could work the hell out of the Radio Shack TRS-80 Model IV back then.

Having read a few online forums, I can only say that the internet doesn't just bring out the worst in some people, it also contributes to the dumbing down of society as a whole. Too much (anti)social media, too much freedom for weirdos and too many over-emotional teenagers.

Prince.org has been home to many a heated argument and it has its fair share of trolls but compared to a lot of other sites, this is like a fucking utopia and is the only form of "social" site I'll ever be part of.

I'm a genius so I don't personally need computers for education, but for "normal" people, it's good. smile

Like I said, it can bring out the worst in people. There are a lot of very very stupid people in the world and the internet just serves to highlight that.

Yeah, there's still paper newspapers and magazines. I don't think that will ever change. At least not in my lifetime.

haha if you mean when I said "cloud-ish", what I meant is that computers like the Chromebook and Macbook Air are based more on the idea of pulling apps and stuff from a cloud service, rather than installed locally. They were also meant to rival the netbooks of the day (which have all but disappeared anyway). The Chromebook is almost all cloud-based use and storage, but the Air does have local storage, but it's limited. You know Apple is all "stream this, airdrop that". There are even some Macbook (non-Air) that have 512GB of storage locally compared to others that have 2 or 3 T.

Says the guy who starts threads asking what's the best music to lose your virginity to...

I hope you're joking about asking me to stop swearing because if not, you've just outed yourself as a bit of a [CENSORED] smile

By the way, what did I say that was "awful"?

Joking? Why would I be joking? I'm absolutely and completely serious....it's the *way* you say it... "*fucking* utopia" is not how a girl, or any human being talks - I mean, if you'd said - "that guy hit a girl the other day - what a fucking bastard" - now there, I completely agree with you.

A "utopia" is.... like, a nice, lovely thing, not to be prefixed with the word "fucking".

Maybe it's an Irish thing - round here we don't DARE to call our school prinicpals "cunts", though ALL of them deserve epithets faaaar worse, and all of us would dearly have loved to. How I wish someone like you had been here to do that, when I was that age smile

What's wrong about asking for music to lose your virginity to?

How could you possibly determine what way girls talk? From reading your threads, I doubt you have much experience speaking to women in real life.

It's not just that thread about asking what music you want to lose your virginity to. There was another thread you started asking what the point was in MTV. When I seen the title, I thought, "What IS the point in MTV?" and was about to reply until I seen that the bulk of your question was more of a sexual one, rather than actually wondering what MTV is still around for. Most of your threads are sexual in nature, whether it's asking what music people like to "fuck to" or talking about how you came across child porn while you were looking for regular porn and how disgusted you were at it. All these threads make you come across as a bit pervy. It's genuinely unsettling.

..well, not that I have to explain myself to you, but.... - only TWO threads were about that....I was just.....feeling like talking about that stuff that day.

You're clearly...um Blind if you say all I talk about is sex - I have posted about everything possible here from books to movies to gyms to Linux to games to.....well, aaaaaall the shit we talk about. And in fact we've talked about tons of random stuff like that privately as well. I think you know damn well I'm not "pervy" in the least. Maybe you're wary of men hitting on you online or something - but really, if you come to a bloody Prince site and then say "don't talk about sex in songs", well......you should get off of it. We're not going to Afghanistanise the site just for YOUR sake.

We've never, EVER talked about that kind of stuff privately. And yes, I'm wary of men hitting on me online, which is why I stopped using a picture of myself as my avatar because some creep kept sending me orgNotes telling me how beautiful I am, only not in those words. Now, that wasn't you, but yes, I AM wary of these kinds of things.

And as far as your own pervy threads are concerned, I don't care about what you talk about. Those threads don't bother me. I've commented on some of them. My point is that it's hypocritical of you to complain about me using one swear word and then you turn around and write things like "What songs do people like to fuck to". Saying things like the way I speak is "unfeminine, model or no", despite me pointing out numerous times that I'm NOT A MODEL. So it's ok to say "fuck" if you're a guy but not if you're a girl? I don't know how things work in India (actually, I do because I used to work with an Indian girl and she told me a lot of stories about home) but in Ireland (and in most of the world) women are free to use whatever verbiage they please so if me saying "fuck", "shit", "motherfucker" or "CUNT" offends you, my advice is to look away from the screen unless you faint from the coarse language.
