Why Do TV People Go Ethnic On Certain Words?

For years, it's irritated the fuck out of me when a reporter, or TV presenter, pronounces certain words differently. In upstate New York, there's a gal named Yolanda Vega. She announces the lottery numbers every week. "I'm YoooooLANDA Vegaaaa!" Love it. But when I've heard her speak otherwise, if she says something like "enchilada" or "taquito", she gets all ethnic on it.
You know Becky, I love a fish sandwich. But last week Harold and I went to get EEN-CHA-LAAH-DAAZ at the gastro pub. He ordered a plate of TAH-KEEE-TOWS that looked simply scrumptious.

WHAT?! That heifer Giada on Food Network does the same thing. Her tongue does jumping jacks when she says "bruschetta" or "ricotta", but she's Suzy homemaker otherwise.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

They do this to show off. rolleyes I know, it is annoying. But what really pisses me off and grates on my nerves if the way people have affected this assinine way of adding an exta syllable to one syllable words, i.e., "NOAHH!" "OH MY GODAHH!" "STOPAHH!" "YESSAH!" WHAT THE FUCK!!! I hate that shit! Why do people feel the need to speak this way? It especially annoys me when I hear adults do it. And that tranny Wendy Williams is a prine offender. stfu

While I can appreciate your rant a bit, I will take great issue with you berating a woman, and using a transphobic word to do it. It's out of line. I'm sure you didn't mean harm in that way, but it's something worth checking on.

Wendy is no friend of mine, for sure. We share that idea. I think she spins tales that are incredibly untrue, which goes beyond gossip to me, and never really retracts them if it doesn't suit her purposes in life. The truth is plenty interesting without having to make up shit. I think she's also a bit insensitive when it comes to gay people, despite her glam squad being a closet full of homos (no pun). Her snide glares at the camera to insinuate, albeit silently, that someone is gay who might otherwise be married or appearing to be straight by their relationship, or her rant against Bruce Jenner before he came out as Caitlyn is downright sickening. And I'm not a gay guy who gets overly offended at every single thing. But I am trying to change the way people use words, or what words they use. I love language, and there are plenty of other words to use to attack what someone does. There's also the idea of attacking what someone does without delving into ad hominem. Using "tranny" is not only an offensive word to those who are walking through a journey of gender identification or transition, but it's used the same way someone would call something stupid as "gay". It's a pejorative that need not be handed out that way.

All that said, Wendy's terrible at what she does, and her show is a shitfest. I used to love it early on, then I realized, like you, that she was just a doling out negativity and it benefits no one who consumes it. She's a New Yorker, so her kawfee type accent is expected. (I live in NY, so it doesn't phase me.) She could clean her shit up though, I'm with you on that 100%.

LOL NO! We know how hurtful those words are. It's probably different in how black folks use the N word among themselves, opposed to gay folks calling either other derogatory words. Tranny is really fucking offensive and demeaning, as is faggot. It's usually said with the same piss and vinegar that the N word is when said to black folks; trying to belittle someone.

I'm not a faggot, but I am a cocksucker. So there's that distinction. (Betcha wish ya didn't say anything, did ya? LOL j/k lol )

I'm just responding in kind. These are reactions to your overbearing presence on this board. And since you brought that bullshit to one my threads, I just thought I'd remind you that anyone could get it. And I posted on this thread to highlight your hypocrisy.

You need this board. I don't.

The pioneer in that here in Houston was a TV reporter named Elma Barrerra. She was the first to pronounce her name with a Hispanic accent. And she really layed it on! It sounded like she was saying, This is Elmabalala, Eyewitness News".

But she led the way, and now everyone pronounces their name in their accent of choice/heritage. Way to go, Elma!

This subject could have been adequately covered in my "This Pisses Me Off To No End" thread.

I used to post stuff a long time ago in threads titled "Things That Piss Me Off" (not here, on another board). It was a character, and all the things were humorous (I hope!), but it was always a lot of fun.

And believe me, I totally didn't think you were trying to be offensive or an asshole, as others seem to slip so easily into. Life's a constant lesson. We learn stuff every day. But all that aside, we share a very similar dislike of all things Ms. How You Doooin'.

Why would I take this point to another thread? It's in this thread that the OP clearly states "But I am trying to change the way people use words, or what words they use."

Just not the words he uses, despite protestations of life being a constant lesson, and learning stuff every day. shrug

Besides, you don't want me on that thread. I'm a purveyor of unpopular opinions that tend to get ignored, dismissed or otherwise misunderstood, despite their hurtful truths. And I'm okay with that. razz

Maybe Giada pronounces Italian words correctly because she's Italian.

Exactly.
