Logan (2017) - In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X somewhere on the Mexican border. However, Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are upended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces.

The best of the three Wolverine movies, but that isn't saying much. 3/5

The Sense of an Ending (2017) - A man becomes haunted by his past and is presented with a mysterious legacy that causes him to re-think his current situation in life.

Even though reviews have been so-so, with a cast this good, the acting will be top-notch at the very least. 4/5

i really love turnpike house & words & music, & i'd probably slot those slightly higher...but lipslide is definitely top tier for me too.

Words And Music beats the U.K. Lipslide for me, but the U.S. release replaces some of the weaker album tracks with some excellent b-sides so that's why it's my favorite.

The band announced a new album this week. http://www.saintetienne.c...gory/news/

i noticed the other day that a new song popped up on their youtube channel. i am a touch indifferent to the new track right now, but it's nice to have a new album to look forward to.

.

the world's end 3.5/5 all of edgar wright's movies seem to leave me feeling a touch disappointed in that i always like them, when it seems i ought to love them. still perfectly good fun, of course, and that's not to be dismissed lightly.

The Young Messiah (2016)

Like Last Days In The Desert, s this is an apocryphal story about the life of Christ, and one of the better religious movies I've seen in a while. The cast is outstanding.

The cast is heavy with Game of Thrones vets, including Sean "Ned Stark" Bean, Clive "Blackfish" Tully . . . and even David Bradley -- the odious Walder Frey himself -- as a kindly Nazorean rabbi(!).

Now You See Me 2 (2016) On the plus side the special effects and location shots were amazing, also Lizzy Chapman who replaced Isla Fisher (due to pregnancy) did the best with what she got screenwise and I think her great role in films is yet to come. However, but I preferred the orginal Four Horseman line-up and the first film overall.....because it seemed more fresher and it didn't drag on like the sequel. I give it a 2.5 out of 5 popcorn

the raid - 4/5 indonesian guys relentlessly beat the hell out of each other for 100 minutes. when i first watched this about 4 years ago, i only gave it a 3 & said some nonsense about finding it a little tedious at times. i must have been shrooming. this is lean & fun & thrilling & if you want a simple, straightforward action film, i don't think you could ask for much more than this.

prevenge 3.5/5 pregnant woman, coaxed along by a series of conversations with her unborn, goes on a killing spree. directed by and starring alice lowe, who was 7 months pregnant at the time of filming, i'd say she's made a fairly singular, quirky horror film. appropriately nasty at times but also containing a good amount of satirical humour.

A little disappointing considering the talent and the epic trailers, though not without it's charms. It's definitely not one I need to see again until the sequel is about to come out. 2.5/5

For a general audience popcorn movie, i noticed so much detail/work involved. I also noticed that it was different in tone to the usual action romp. So then i went and googled to see who the director was, and his name is Jordan Vogt-Roberts. He is 32 years old. I kinda figured it was by a younger director. They have the energy and stamina to delve even into a kong movie with gusto. And are also more apt to have an original non-hollywood-stereotypical eye. So I expect he will go on to far bigger and better things.

.

Not that Skull Island is a '"great Movie!", but it's a good movie. It kind of reminded me of early Steven Spielberg, but not as polished or concise.

the raid 2 4.5/5 i haven't watched every action movie ever made, but if four or five of the sequences in this movie aren't among the top ten most primal, exciting, propulsive action scenes of all time, i'll eat my shoe werner herzog-style. there's an undercover cop story in here that meanders around, but it really doesn't matter much. i'm often (but not always) fairly indifferent to films that are all spectacle/no story, but when it's this exciting & done with such attention to detail, who cares?

Tomorrowland 3/5 boxed I enjoyed it despite the fact is bombed completely with RT. Maybe it's a mood thing and I was in need of a Disney movie in that moment.

the past 4.5/5 this feels very much 'of a piece' with the other asghar farhadi movies i've viewed recently, and it's every bit as good. there is no artifice - every second feels completely believable. the only criticism i'd dare to level is that there is perhaps a sameness to them if you view them closely together, but criticizing when the movies are of such uniformly high quality is almost senseless.

I kinda of watched the Gods of Egypt. I didn't make it to the end. It was corny has heck and not in a good way. Maybe I need to brush up on my Egyptian mythology but I think they took a WHOLE lot of shortcuts. I did like the scene when they went to visit Ra and how that was put together, the flat earth, the battle of the worm; that was about it.

Bella (2006)

In the hands of a lesser director and cast, this would have been a Hallmark Channel movie. But the cast and direction were superb.

Don Johnson is awesome in this movie!

I just watched Split and thought it was cool but when the ending reveal came everything clicked into place, and when I realized what I just watched it made the movie really great and I think the first of it's kind in a too tired genre as of late.

the most hated woman in america 3/5 netflix's biopic of madalin murray o'hair. shares the shortcomings of a good number of these types of films, i suppose, in that it stumbles about a bit while trying to compress XX number of years into 90 minutes. a crime story, family drama & story of a movement all bump up awkwardly against each other, & none really get told in a completely satisfying way. many interesting elements, but ultimately frustrating.

Ghost in The Shell. 0-10

Yes I must admit that a scantily clad Scarlet Johansson is the reason I went. And yes sex sells.

Shockingly bad movie.
Weird in the lack of minimum film and story telling basics on the screen.
Weird in how there was no music, but only long sustained notes every so often. It felt like it wasn't a finished product.

The dialogue is every bit as bad as an anime cartoon, but this is LIVE ACTION! Every time someone opens their mouth and says something you groan out loud.

How the scenes are cut together and the pacing is bizarre.

Obviously this was made for the fans of this anime and for a foreign market, but damn. The movie lacks everything any story needs. No emotion, character development, no humor, no humanity just the shell as advertised.

So I can't in any way shape or form recommend this movie to ANYBODY. If you are drawn to seeing a beautiful Scarlet Johansson, ...well just watch the preview. It's no exaggeration in saying this is way worse than any of you can imagine.

the lovers and the despot - 3.5/5 documentary on the kidnapping of south korean director shin sang-ok & his ex-wife, actress choi eun-hee, by kim jong-il, in the hope they would help him build a north korean film industry.

.

i was a little disappointed at how conventional this documentary was, considering it tells such a bizarre story. it's perfectly fine, but paul fischer's book 'a kim jong-il production' was really great at relaying all the details of this unbelievably strange story i thought, and i don't think someone watching this doc without any background would get the same impact. if you're interested in the tale, i'd go to the book first.

I had my first threesome yesterday! Yep, after all these years I finally did it. I didn’t even have to convince my wife – she was cool with it!

But I have to admit, it wasn't all that great. I mean, it kind of was at first. We got off to a slow start - I'm not sure everyone was into it in the beginning. But it got a lot better in the middle. The end, however, was very unfulfilling. I just felt......empty and unsatisfied.

So, no more threesomes for me. And besides - who has time to watch three movies in one day very often?

Oh come on! What thread are we in?!? You knew I was talking about movies all this time! So onto my first three-reviews-in-one post!

I didn't start out to watch three movies in one day. Heck, it's all I can do to fit time for ONE movie. But I'd recorded the Edward G. Robinson classic "The Man With Two Faces" on a whim, and decided to watch that yesterday. But first, as I was channel-surfing, I came across the 2004 docu-drama "Evel Knievel".

Evel Knievel was AWESOME!

"Evel Knievel" was LAME!

Gosh, what a boring by-the-numbers TV movie (I assume this was a TV movie. It had to be a TV movie!). It's stupid, slow-moving, misses much of what made Evel so cool, and just generally not worth watching. Since I am a guy, and this post is a metaphor for some twisted sex act, I will just say - This movie was foreplay and guys don't waste much time with foreplay. (Other guys don't, anyway.)

Forget all the rigamarole in this movie. Here is possibly the coolest thing ever recorded on a radio show. It's from the Jim Rome show. Rome has a sports show. He's a SoCal smartass, but he's been a cool smartass ever since former L.A. Rams quarterback Jim Everett kicked his butt on TV (true story). Rome was interviewing Evel Knievel, who he held in awe. Then this happened:

PURE AWESOMENESS.

My Evel Knievel soundbite gets a rating of 10 Snake River Jumps out of 10 Snake River Jumps, but the "Evel Knievel" movie is rated as a total Caesar's Palace Fountains Jump Wipe-Out. Avoid!

Next, I moved on to "The Man With Two Faces". I watched a classic black-and-white movie! Aren't you filmophiles proud of me?!?!?!?

This was a pretty good movie. As you guys all know, plots, dialogue and acting ability don't mean anthing today. It's all CGI and comic book rip-offs these days. But back then you actually had to be able to ACT to get in movies. What a concept!

The plot revolves around a slimey dude who was married to Edward G. Robinson's sister (Mary Astor) and everyone thought was dead but actually, he faked his own death to avoid creditors and has returned to claim his bride. He has some weird hypnotic effect on her - she becomes a zombie whenever he's around.

Astor is also America's best up-and-coming actress and is about to make her star turn in a new play. But her husband's re-emergence zombifies her and puts the play at risk. So......SPOILER ALERT..... Edward G. Robinson takes matters into his own hands and ultimately kills the guy.

I promised myself I wouldn't make any Chief Wiggums comparison in this review, so I won't.

"The Man With Two Faces" actually gets three faces out of a possible five faces. Not the best old movie, but pretty much any old movie is better than today's tripe.

Which brings us to the premature ejaculation of yesterday's threesome:

"Why Him?"

ZOMG all I could think about while watching this was "Why him? No - Why ME?!?" and I actually referred to this movies as "Why Me?" at one point in a conversation with my wife!

This movie is stupid. It's bad. It's not funny. It has little to no redeeming qualities. All the actors - who are good actors - play really bad parts. i'm sure each of them leaves this movie off their current resumes.

There is one and only one reason why this movie is so bad:

Jonah Hill.

This movie was his idea. He came up with the story, and did lots of other bad things that made this crapfest a reality.

Ugh. In what world is this neckbeard a player in Hollywood? He's completely untalented. He's not funny. He's not dramatic. He's not attractive. He's not ugly enough to be interesting. He's just....there.

My guess is that's how he got into acting. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time. He's like the school dork who gets to sit at the cool kids' lunch table, and some crumbs fall his way. But the thing is, he doesn't know he's at the cool kids' table only because the cool kids need someone to laugh at and/or he comes from a rich family so the cool kids use him for his money.

And who are the cool kids Jonah Hill hangs out with? Mostly other untalented doofuses like Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow and Justin Long and Kanye West and Jake Gylennhaal and Seth Rogen (yes, he gets mentioned twice because he's exceptionally unfunny).

I just Googled this dude and guess what? You know what I said about why he gets to hang out with the cool kids? Bingo! His parents are rich and he buddied up to Dustin Hoffman's kids. THAT is how this neckbeard was foisted upon us. I like Dustin Hoffman but he still has to answer for unleashing Jonah Hill on all of us. What did we ever do to you to deserve this, Dustin?!?

We could analyze how Hill is almost certainly responsible for the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie break-up (you KNOW there was more than one time where Jolie shouted "I TOLD YOU NOT TO BRING THAT NECKBEARD AROUND OUR KIDS! GET HIM OUT OF HERE AT ONCE!!!!") but why bother? Let's crap all over this movie!

As you know, RodeoSchro's First Rule Of A Good Movie is that the main characters have to be likeable. In this movie, NO ONE is likeable.

Not James Franco, who plays a completely disconnected-with-reality video game mogul whose main comedic device is saying "F***".

Not Brian Cranston, who plays a father that never completely figures out how to be nice to anyone.

Not (and now we've run out of people whose names I know) Cranston's wife, who is the poor woman's Tina Fey in looks but not in comedic ability.

Not Cranston's daughter, who plays a completely insufferable Stanford student (I assume all Stanford students are insufferable).

Not Cranston's son, who you will want to slap the bejeezus out of for being a 15-year-old millenial who is completely pissed that he's not already the CEO of his daddy's company. Seriously, that kid should have been paddled for most of the movie.

Not Franco's stereotypical butler/valet/self-defense trainer, who is a character you've seen 1,000,000 times in 1,000,000 movies that were better than this one.

Everyone sucks. Even KISS sucks. They show up to the proposal (which you knew was going to happen the very first second Tina Fey Lite tells Franco how much she and Cranston love KISS), play about 10 seconds of "I Was Made For Loving You" and then are not seen again until Paul Stanley is playing a ukelele.

Do not waste your time or your money on this bomb. The fact that it made a decent amount of money is all the proof that you need that millenials are going to be the death of us all, if Donald Trump doesn't kill us all first.

"Why Him" is the bottom turd in the Japanese toilet that no one can flush because it's full of turds.
