Your Favorite Wrestlers - Who's the Best?

No, this thread ain't about that boring Greco-Roman crap. This is about wrasslin', and here
is my list of favorites and ultimately who I think is the best:

10. Dusty Rhodes

9. Sting

8. The Undertaker

7. Bret "The Hitman" Hart

6. "Macho Man" Randy Savage

5. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin

4. Hulk Hogan

3. The Rock

2. Shawn Michaels

1. Ric Flair

1. Bret Hart

2. Stone Cold Steve Austin

3. Razor Ramon

4. Mr Perfect

5. Owen Hart

6. The Undertaker

7. Chris Jericho

8. Ultimate Warrior

9. Shawn Michaels

10. Jeff Jarrett

Admittedly, I don't really watch it anymore but growing up in the 90's (I was born in 1990) I used to watch it a lot with my brother so there may well be some good wrestlers around now, but these are the ones I know, therefore, my favourites.

I'm interested in why you didn't select John Cena being that you are younger than me by about
twelve years?

Razor Ramon and Jeff Jarrett are great picks, by the way. Owen Hart and Mr. Perfect are very
interesting picks.

I'm honestly not THAT familiar with John Cena. I've seen him on TV and everything but he came into it around the time I stopped watching it. And the few times I've watched it recently I've found him to be very annoying. The two good matches I've seen him in were both against AJ Styles and it was mainly down to AJ Styles that they were good matches as far as I could see.

Razor Ramon and Jeff Jarrett were always among my favourites. I loved their characters and having watched a few of their matches again recently on YouTube with older eyes, I can see that they were really good in the ring too.

Owen Hart was every bit as good as Bret as far as I am concerned. The only reason I put Bret above Owen is because I've always had a major crush on him and I completely geeked out when I met him at a book signing in Dublin a few years ago. And Mr Perfect should have been world champion. He really should have been. He had the look, was great on the microphone and was brilliant in the ring.

I forgot to mention when I did my list that as an honorable mention, I'd include Vince McMahon. I know he's not a wrestler but he was a brilliant villain. Always made me laugh.

As good as he was I always found Bret's matches quite repetitive.

My personal fave is Mick Foley, for his humour, what he put on the line to entertain the fans, and the variety of characters he managed to come up with.

In terms of the best that I've seen, Shawn Michaels would be tough to top, and The Undertaker because of how good his gimmick has been for so many years. Their first Wrestlemania match was the best match I've ever seen.

My favorite was Wahoo McDaniel. I also liked Mil Mascaras. These guys are from the 1960's.

If you're looking to evaluate wrestlers in terms of skill, charisma, and draw, then there are only a handful that come to mind in the modern era. Gorgeous George seems to be the standard for the pre-modern era. The cream of the crop are --

Ric Flair
Shawn Michaels
Randy Savage
The Rock
Bret "Hitman" Hart
Jerry Lawler

My favorites are a much different list, and they change from time to time. In chronological order, they'd (roughly) be --

Superstar Bill Dundee
The Fabulous Ones
Hulk Hogan
The British Bulldogs
Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
Randy Savage

Arn Anderson
Lex Luger
The Undertaker
Sid Vicious
Ric Flair
The NwO (for the promos alone)
Stone Cold Steve Austin
The Rock

Lawler may be the most unsung wrestler of the modern era. But you're old enough to know who
Dusty Rhodes is - no love for the American Dream?

I would argue that you've placed Hitman too high on your list for someone who "executed" pedestrian
promos at best. Lex Luger and Arn Anderson and Sid Vicious? Whoah!

He was probably the father of the modern promo and modern day heel.

My grandmother, who introduced me to wrestling, adored him. His bits with Kaufman were fucking
genius.

1. Ric Flair (as the old saying goes...he could carry a broomstick to a 5-star match)

-

2. Ricky Steamboat (as Flair would say...you want to know how to do it right? Watch Steamboat videos)

-

3. Bret Hart (one of the only reasons I watched the WWF in the late 80s/early 90s, even as a tag wrestler)

-

4. Randy Savage (the other reason I watched WWF in the 80s)

-

5. Stone Cold Steve Austin (preferred him as Stunning Steve in USWA/WCW, but he was the man)

-

6. Kenta Kobashi (quite possibly the greatest all around heavyweight wrestler EVER...look him up on youtube)

-

7. Kurt Angle (WRESTLING MACHINE)

-

8. Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan (WRESTLING MACHINE)

-

9. Manami Toyota (GREATEST FEMALE WRESTLER EVER...look her up on youtube)

-

10. Bull Nakano (2nd GREATEST FEMALE WRESTLER EVER...look her up too)

-

11. Shawn Michaels (I rank him low because he's a piece of shit, but he could do it in the ring for sure)

-

12. Chris Jericho (quite possibly the most underrated wrestler ever)

-

13. KENTA/Hideo Itami (never should have signed with NXT...look up his matches w/Bryan Danielson on youtube)

-

14. Naomichi Marufuji (AWEOME junior heavyweight, look him up!)

-

15. Dusty Rhodes (wasnt that great in the ring, but I love me some Dusty!)

Make it so, Number One...

I only really know him from the mid 90's WWF and his commentary in the late 90's. I used to love his jokes about Stu Hart being old. "Stu Hart is so old, the three wise men used to help him with his homework" or "he still has his ticket stub from the original David vs Goliath".

Indeed.

Lawler was one of the biggest names in the game in the pre-WrestleMania era. He was the lead draw. In the Southeastern circuit, he helped put over the Randy Savages, Iron Sheiks and Hulk Hogans of the world.

A lot of people don't realize this, but he was a lead draw in Southern wrestling well into the 90's, against the WWF's own Vince McMahon and the Harts, who played the heels in regional tickets as the big bad bullies taking over pro wrestling.

He was much more than the commentator you've seen on the WWE for 20 years. He was probably one of the 3 biggest names in the business before the WWF took off.

Lawler may be the most unsung wrestler of the modern era. But you're old enough to know who Dusty Rhodes is - no love for the American Dream?

In terms of skill, though, was Dusty really on that level? I loved the American Dream, but he was the "everyman." He had the charisma and the draw, but skill?

I would argue that you've placed Hitman too high on your list for someone who "executed" pedestrian promos at best. Lex Luger and Arn Anderson and Sid Vicious? Whoah!

Not everybody has the same mix of skill, charisma and draw. Hitman was a highly skilled wrestler, who really was the bridge between the Hogan and Attitude eras in the early-to-mid 90's, when WCW began to pick off top WWF talent.

You see my choices were different from my FAVORITES. Two different lists. Only Flair and Rock are on my list of favorites. Back when I was lifting weights in the 80's and 90's, my favorites were the bigger lugs with the power moves. That's why Luger and Vicious were on my list of favorites. They aren't even in my conversation in terms of the best.

Just curious, does everyone still watch pro wrestling now. I see a lot of the legends but not too many new names apart from Rusev.

I can't narrow it down to just 10 favourites as there's different variables to consider, actual wrestling skill and there's promos, the actual showmanship etc. For me guys like Ric Flair, The Rock, Stonecold, HBK, Superstar Billy Graham, Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Dusty Rhodes, Macho Man had charisma for days. There's also the wrestling guys like Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Dynamite Kid, Dean Malenko etc. You have the Puroresu legends like Muta, Kabuki, Kobashi, Misawa, Kawada et al. Many great tag teams over the years and there's the unsung guys like Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton, Ricky Steamboat, Mr Perfect, Rick Rude who never really rate in top 10s but were great workers. IMO the best wrestlers are those who can take a gimmick which on paper doesn't work but turn it into gold. Undertaker has I think the best gimmick in wrestling history and he's really made it work and although he evolved other the years he's still The Phenom. I could sit through hours of old WWF and WCW for the entertainment value alone. ECW too especially from 1995-97, which predates the WWF Attitude Era. WCW in the early 90s with the Dangerous Alliance, Sting, Cactus, Vader, the Pillman/Liger matches I prefer to the Monday Nught Wars era. When Bill Watts took over he made wrestling more authentic like he did with Mid South and the UWF. So yeah top 10 is too close to call but Flair, Hogan, Dusty et all are rightly lauded as legends.

I don't really watch it anymore. I stopped watching completely around 2002 and last year I began watching some of the ppv's like the Royal Rumble and wrestlemanias and one or two others but it's not as good as I remember it. I've watched a few NXT events based off a recommendation of an orger and they are really good. My fellow countryman Finn Balor is a particular highlight. There's a Japanese guy too who's name escapes me. He's really good. Some of the women are great. Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks and Bayley are involved in some really good matches. It's a major step up from Sable and Sunny anyway.
