bruno, a very simple berliner (borderline mentally handicapped, possibly?), who has nothing in the world and whose only friends (he thinks) are a prostitute & his senior citizen neighbor, escape cruel germany to join the senior's nephew in wisconson. everything ought to turn out alright in wisconsin, i guess, because it's in america and things generally seem to turn out ok for most americans, according to the senior & the prostitute. bruno, simple as he is, seems to have a more fatalistic outlook.

bruno really does have a hard time of it, he has a reason to flee his miserable life, and things really don't get better for him. everything falls apart, climaxing in the best robbery scene i think i've ever seen outside of a coen brothers' movie, and what has to be the greatest ever use of a chicken in a film.

this is weird, funny, & i think this might be the most perfect movie i've ever watched. 5/5

Stroszek (Werner Herzog, 1977)
Watching that older gentleman write down his findings in animal magnetism gets right down to the broken heart of it. We have no idea what we do to each other in our vain attempts at implying anything other than a kind understanding of what it's like to be human.
But it's not all bleak. In many ways it's strangely up lifting. Perhaps in some fashion it almost works as a type of a love story to our dysfunction.
And we'd say, "That's so bizarre!" Then shrug and put another nickel in the slot and watch the chicken dance.
Moonlight.... A perfect example of why oscars mean nothing to me. Thumbs down.

What's to like. The movie is boring & light on story.
The acting is on point but with exception to the lead character, we've seen it all before. Drug dealers, bullies, neglectful junky mom, etc... And I get it, it's hard to be gay in the ghetto. Surprise!
It's pure oscar bait, which is not my thing. The only nominee I've seen this year that was good was Hell Or High Water (excellent film!). At least I gave Moonlight a chance. I'll never subject myself to La La Land... Ryan Gosling in a musical? No thanks! That's two things I don't like.
I'm not putting anyone down for liking Moonlight. It's just not for me. Not enough of a story, nothing special about the cinematography or interesting about the direction. The first segment with the Chiron as a child pulled me in (I wanted to see more of the mentor relationship with Juan) and then nothing. Just boring.
To suggest that if I don't like the film it must be for racist reasons says more about 2freaky than it does me. He's just trying to bring some Politics & Religion drama into a movie thread for no reason. I'm with you on 'Moonlight.' Although I don't necessarily mind it being light on story, what story there is is poorly told. I think the first part ("Little") would be a great short film - it does have emotional resonance. The disappearance of Juan is the biggest misstep in the film (since he was the only interesting character).

i was really curious to see what you'd have to say, & i'm truly happy to see you think so much of it.
i don't feel at home in this world anymore - 3.5/5 a working class woman, frustrated & occasionally humiliated by her daily life, tries to retrieve her stolen laptop; violence & some hilarity ensues. directed by macon blair, best known to date for appearing in jeremy saulnier's films (murder party, blue ruin, green room). this definitely feels 'of a piece' with those saulnier movies, & people who like them will probably feel right at home with this as well.

(1962) starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford....to help me prepare for Feud: Bette & Joan on Sunday, and I have to say I found this film to be both campy and quite intense Both actresses gave really brave performances, especially Davis who should have won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1962 for her tour de force and unforgettable performance as "Baby" Jane Hudson.....the way she tortures Branche both mentally and then physically is spellbinding I give this classic film a 4.5 out of 5

It's quickly become a favorite. I've seen it twice in the last couple of days. So many lasting images.
My new tagline: "Is this really me!" with no question mark. I don't think I'll ever see a chair lift again without it invoking this movie.
