Despite the common cry that cursing makes people sounds less intelligent, research suggests it may actually be a sign of a solid vocabulary.

Benjamin Bergen, professor of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego, is the author of "What the F: What Swearing Reveals About Our Language, Our Brains, and Ourselves." He tells CBS Los Angeles people who swear the most "also have the biggest vocabulary overall."

A 2014 study by the Language Sciences Journal found people who use swear words are often more articulate on other areas. The experiment asked 49 participants ages 18 to 22 to say as many swear words as they could in 60 seconds.

Those who used the most swear words were also able to name more animals in the same amount of time.

According to the Daily Mail, another group of researchers say swearing can also be an emotional coping mechanism, making us feel like we can bounce back more easily in difficult times.

I've never really thought people had a limited vocabulary because they cussed. Cussing has its place, and certainly enhances communication sometimes. I'd much rather tell someone to go fuck themselves than 'get a life' or 'eat my shorts'.

But I've also heard people superfluously use cuss words and I tune out. There's some comedian that uses the n-word as a comma or a period. It's just unappealing. I remember Eddie Murphy's Delirious being so popular, then Raw came out and people hated it because it was too much cussing. Not that people were offended by fuck, just that it overshadowed the story telling. 223 times in 90-minutes is a lot of fucks given. Oddly, it's still the #1 stand-up movie ever.

I never tipped the swear jar. I jerked off into it. lol

Ironically, I just received a t-shirt in the mail yesterday that says, in big white letters BEARD THE FUCK UP on the front of it.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

I fucking knew it!! And after all those fucking cunts said "Emma, don't swear. It's a sign of a limited vocabulary". Well fuck them, the stupid fucking bastards. Shows how much they fucking know. Fuck all. The useless shower of shits. They don't know their arse from their elbows. I always knew that fucking swearing had its place. As long as it's done in fucking moderation of course. You don't want to just put a "fuck", "prick" or "motherfucker" into every fucking sentence just for the fucking sake of it. It's fucking overkill. Besides, people will think you're a cunt. So swear, by all means. Just don't fucking overdo it.

Who the fuck listens to this shit? Honestly - 49 people aged 18-22 (probably University students) who list a corpus of swear words and then a corpus of animals is representative of the total vocabulary of all of us? Bullshit!

Fuck

Perhaps one of the most interesting and colourful words in the English language today is the word "fuck". It is the one magical word which, just by its sound, can describe pain, pleasure, love, and hate.

In language, "fuck" falls into many grammatical categories. It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John). It can be an action verb (John really gives a fuck), a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck), an adverb (Mary is fucking interested in John), or as a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck).

It can also be used as an adjective (Mary is fucking beautiful) or an interjection (Fuck! I'm late for my date with Mary). It can even be used as a conjunction (Mary is easy, fuck she's also stupid). As you can see, there are very few words with the overall versatility of the word "fuck"..

Aside from its sexual connotations, this incredible word can be used to describe many situations:

1. Greetings: "How the fuck are ya?"

2. Fraud: "I got fucked by the car dealer."

3. Resignation: "Oh, fuck it!"

4. Trouble: "I guess I'm fucked now."

5. Aggression: "FUCK YOU!"

6. Disgust: "Fuck me."

7. Confusion: "What the fuck.......?"

8. Difficulty: "I don't understand this fucking business!"

9. Despair: "Fucked again..."

10. Pleasure: "I fucking couldn't be happier."

11. Displeasure: "What the fuck is going on here?"

12. Lost: "Where the fuck are we."

13. Disbelief: "UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE!"

14. Retaliation: "Up your fucking ass!"

15. Denial: "I didn't fucking do it."

16. Perplexity: "I know fuck all about it."

17. Apathy: "Who really gives a fuck, anyhow?"

18. Greetings: "How the fuck are ya?"

19. Suspicion: "Who the fuck are you?"

20. Panic: "Let's get the fuck out of here."

21. Directions: "Fuck off."

22. Disbelief: "How the fuck did you do that?"

It can be used in an anatomical description- "He's a fucking asshole." It can be used to tell time- "It's five fucking thirty." It can be used in business- "How did I wind up with this fucking job?" It can be maternal- "Motherfucker." It can be political- "Fuck Dan Quayle!"

Well this study was obviously funded by The National Swearing Sailors Organization.
