Shelley Duvall and mental illness

The Popeye and The Shining actress sat down for a talk with Dr. Phil. (I'm not here to battle over Phil's legitimacy, not the point so save it please.) The show aired today. She's been battling mental illness for a good decade, living in Texas (from what I've read). She is very intelligent, verbal, but suffering from delusions of implants, shapeshifters (she believes Robin Williams is not dead, but rather shape shifting), and has more issues.

Phil explained a condition called Clang Association, which is where a person which is where a person gets hung up on a word or a thought and goes off on it. She used the word "hornet", then diverted and said "I'm not calling Bette Midler a whore, or the band Chicago a whore..." "hor" being the syllable she got hung up on. She got hung up on other random words. Another time he said "you're very sweet to talk to me", and she said "I'm not diabetic", being hung up on the idea of sweet or sugar.

It troubles me when I see people suffering from a mental disease or disorder. It has to be torturous for the victim of it. They're always on guard, paranoid, overthinking things, stuck in rituals as a form of quasi-self protection (thinking they're being threatened by "them"), and never seeing things clearly. Shelley is a stunning example of just how severe it can be left untreated.

The show is compelling and heart-breaking. It's not just that it's Shelley Duvall. It's that you realize that many unnamed and often forgotten people suffer without treatment every day.

I couldn't have put it any better. I hope people watching this will think twice about how they treat people who may be suffering from a mental illness...

Oh wow. Yeah, I'll check it out. I loved her spin on the Mother Goose nursery rhymes years ago.

Vivian Kubrick, whose father directed Duvall in The Shining, described the interview as "exploitive entertainment" and "appallingly cruel,"[28] and began a gofundme to raise funds for Duvall.

You know it makes me sad, I always thought she was so freaking adorable.

Shelley also had a great cable show called Fairie Tale Theater which I really enjoyed.

I just seen that. Man, my heart goes out to Shelley. I really sympathize with what she's going through. I was(am) a fan of her acting etc, but hadn't heard anything about her in years. And to be honest, i was completely shocked at the state that she's in. I sincerely hope that she can get the help that she needs. pray rose

Is anyone here disgusted with Dr.Phil? I hate that piece of shit. He exploits people all the time on his show. I never watch it but obviously have seen it. He is disgusting and I don't think he wants to help anyone- the help he offers is always to benefit him- signing them up for HIS life course or giving them HIS book or sending them to one of HIS psychiatrist friends-- This is awful what he did to her - putting her out there for the world to gawk at-- so I refuse to watch it- but not only does he do this to her, he does it to people all the time on his show. I am disappointed in Oprah for being behind this mess. neutral sad

Again, this thread is not about the merits of Dr. Phil. It's about those suffering from and fighting mental illness.

Gotta agree with Superfan1984...

Saying this isn't about the merits of Dr. Phil is all very well but there is a big problem in our society that people with mental health problems often get exploited (and treated like cr*p) - both of which only serves to make them worse and make it harder for them to get the help they very much need. There's a reason they're always "on their guard" - it's not necessarily paranoia. It's because some people are abusive creeps and abusive creeps tend to seek out the vulnerable because, obviously, they're easier to take advantage of. Sometimes that's what leads to mental health problems in the first place - years of abuse that the mind just can't process.

Anyway, my heart goes out to her, I hope she can find someone who doesn't treat her as a form of entertainment and instead genuinely gets her some help.
