It's been such a long time (11 years) that a major hurricane has rocked Florida, most people are having a hard time remembering what it's like to experience major flooding and destruction from one.

Anybody here in the path, either in Florida or Georgia or the Carolinas? Where I am people started buying up all the water, gas, batteries and flashlights a couple days ago. Workplaces have already shut down until probably Monday. Fights are breaking out over the last items on shelves and when people try to cut lines. It's gonna suck without electricity ... no internet, no org

Especially when it comes to candles. A few years ago I fell asleep during a power outage with a candle still going, thank God I woke up in time to see the glass candleholder had cracked and the flame was still going. Unattended candles have cost many people their lives, it's always a good idea to make sure they are put out before leaving the room or going to sleep.

I highly advise anyone in the path of the hurricane to evacuate as far inland as you can.

And if you leave, try to stay out until services are back. Electricity, gas stations open and pumping, grocery stores open, etc.

Then go to Georgia or Alabama or Mississippi. But I would not advise ANYONE that is possibly in the hurricane's path to stay. Grab your valuables, make sure your insurance is paid up, take pictures of what you're leaving behind, and then GET OUT.

I hope people who tried to get out did and those who didn't will be safe. It's been a long time since I went through a Florida hurricane but they ain't no joke. A battery powered radio is a god send in that situation... for everyone there.

I'm hoping I don't jinx myself, but I am absolutely amazed I haven't lost power yet. Went off for a half-second twice, but still on.

He's near Orlando which is fairly inland, but still I've been texting him constantly to make sure that he's prepared for the worst.

Right NOW they don't have any heavy winds, only rain. Praying it stays that way as the storm moves North.

It has been reported that four people died because of the hurricane in the Dominican Republic.

But on the other side of the island in Haiti, some reports are saying over 800 people died from the hurricane! What a crazy disparity!

Damn. I'm still wondering how Florida has managed to dodge so many destructive hurricanes over the years... So many times they turn at the last minute...

I'm sure it has everything to do with Haiti being an incredibly poor country while nearby more affluent areas like the Dominican Republic and Florida don't experience nearly as much damage.

But still, four deaths vs. 800+ on different sides of the same island is ridiculous.

Hurricane Katrina was way worse Hurricane Matthew. And I would know because I survive it in Metairie, Louisiana. But still, Florida, Georgia, & The Carolinas are going to be OK.

It's the poor people of Haiti & the Bahamas that had it real bad. Matthew was Catagory 4 in those areas.

Florida and South Carolina definitely lucked out, no doubt about it. Coulda been much much worse.
