Browns trade Justin Gilbert to Pittsburgh Steelers

Justin Gilbert's disappointing run in Cleveland is at an end.

The Browns traded the former first-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, the Browns announced. The Browns got a sixth-round pick in 2018 in return for Gilbert.

ESPN first reported the trade.

Since being drafted No. 8 overall in 2014, Gilbert has struggled, starting just three games in two seasons. Gilbert often looked lost in coverage and was picked on when on the field.

Browns coach Hue Jackson talked up Gilbert's maturity growth this summer. The corner displayed a modicum of improvement this preseason but still looked lost at times. The 24-year-old suffered a concussion in the team's third preseason game.

The Steelers have been scouring to upgrade their cornerback group. Pittsburgh drafted Artie Burns in the first round, but the 6-foot corner dealt with a quad injury during training camp before playing in the final preseason game.

It's rare for a teams to make inner-division trades, but it speaks to what the Browns thought of Gilbert's progress.

For Cleveland it's another reminder that executive vice president Sashi Brown and the new brass is in full-on rebuild mode with no concerns about jettisoning the previous regime's picks.

The Steelers now have multiple 1st and 2nd round picks invested in their youthful
secondary. Hopefully it will pay dividends as the philosophy under Dick LeBeau
of waiting until the 5th round to draft db's seems to be a thing of the past.

The AFC North considering all teams stay healthy should be a 3 dog fight between

Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Baltimore. Cleveland will probably be a little pesky at

times but the other 3 teams will beat up on each other.

A healthy Steeler's team (with no suspensions) IS the best team in the AFC North.

Truth. Baltimore gives us problems though at times. They seem to beat us in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

It's what makes them a tough matchup for us.

Sports
NFL 2016 Super Bowl and playoff predictions: Steelers have a ring to them
By Mark Maske September 8 at 3:00 PM

Mark Maske sees the Steelers as future Super Bowl champions. (Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images)

A quick rundown of Mark Maske’s predictions for how the 2016 NFL season will play out:

NFC Division winners

EAST: Giants

The defensive makeover is good enough to hold some late leads and Ben McAdoo gets a division title in his first season as an NFL head coach.

[Full 2016 NFL predictions and preview]

NORTH: Packers

Green Bay benefits from the late QB shift-by-necessity by the Vikings.

SOUTH: Panthers

They’re too good for anyone to overtake in the division.

WEST: Seahawks

Seattle regains NFC West supremacy behind an offense now built around the passing of Russell Wilson.

[The Cowboys hope Dak Prescott can carry them through a closing Super Bowl window]

Wild cards

WC1: Cardinals

Chandler Jones bolsters the pass rush and Arizona remains on the Seahawks’ heels all season in a tight division race.

WC2: Buccaneers

The Buccaneers? Yes, the Buccaneers. Jameis Winston has vowed that he’s ready to turn the team into a winner, and he delivers.

AFC Division winners

EAST: Patriots

Tom Brady’s absence gives hope to others and might cost the Patriots home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs. But no one in the division is able to capitalize.

NORTH: Bengals

Andy Dalton remains healthy and the Bengals are as good as anyone entering the playoffs.

SOUTH: Colts

Andrew Luck gets back to being the sport’s next great QB.

WEST: Chiefs

This time, the Chiefs don’t give themselves such a sizable early-season hole.

Wild cards

WC1: Steelers

No Martavis Bryant. No Le’Veon Bell (temporarily). No matter. The Steelers are still very good.

WC2: Broncos

The defense gets it done again despite a less-than-ideal QB situation in which rookie Paxton Lynch takes over for Trevor Siemian at some point.

[The case against a Broncos Super Bowl repeat is pretty damning]

NFC title game

Seahawks over Panthers

Russell Wilson gets back to another Super Bowl.

Yeah but he played in the second matchup at Baltimore and Baltimore beat us with some

backups. Flacco was out and Forsett. We may have taken them lightly but they seemed to be

the more determined team.

You're right where as most games the networks bypass the national anthem and
get right to coverage of the game. Just something else to stir up more controversy.

As for football it's been a lot of great games today. The Jags gave the Packers
all they wanted. The Bengals and Jets had a playoff atmosphere to today's game
and the Chiefs made an amazing comeback over the Chargers in OT after being down 24-3. I watched several games on Directv NFL package preview weekend.

Yeah I know. Jets kicker Nick Foles missed a chip shot FG and an extra point
and Mike Wallace of all people scored the lone TD for the Ratbirds.
