Master Deputy Sheriff Ryan Flood said Tuesday that the authorities had not confirmed any of these sightings but said that extra deputies were patrolling the apartment complex. Property managers were also distributing fliers that warn children against walking in the woods alone at night. And the calls to the police continue: On Monday, a child at a different complex phoned the police to report another clown sighting.

on October 04, 2016 at 12:59 PM, updated October 04, 2016 at 1:10 PM PARSIPPANY — In the wake of recent creepy clown sightings nationally, township police say they responded Monday night to a report of a person wearing a clown mask carrying a plastic machete and scaring people at the QuickChek. A woman told officers when they arrived around 10 p.m. a male in a clown mask approached her as she was exiting the QuickChek at 490 North Beverwyck Road and made gestures aimed at scaring her before fleeing to the side of the building out of her view, Parsippany police said in a Facebook post. The individual was described as male with black hair wearing a clown mask, black hoodie and black pants. A second witness told officers he saw the individual wearing the clown mask approach as he was walking around the side of the building. The individual wearing the clown mask was dragging a plastic machete on the ground and attempting to scare him. The individual then fled the scene, possibly with two females, through a hole in a fence in the rear of the building, police said.
Officers were not able to locate the clown, but, police said, the incidents are believed to have been more along the lines of "misguided pranks" than criminal threats. "Well everyone, the first of the clown calls have arrived in Parsippany," police said in a statement. "While the perpetrators may think it's funny to dress like a clown, carry objects, and frighten people, it can also get you into some legal trouble depending on the circumstances." The statement continued: "We are hoping it never has to come to this, but some of the 'clown charges' you may be charged with are terroristic threats, harassment, and creating false public alarm depending on the circumstances of the incident." | |

Penn State police Sgt. Mike Nelson said that there were no real sightings of clowns known to authorities. That didn’t stop at least 500 students, Nelson’s minimum estimate, from latching onto the idea that there was one on the loose in the borough. “Fortunately, there was no property damage, no injury and no violence,” Nelson said. “And there were no sightings.” The rumor mill spread quickly, causing dozens of students searching for a clown to turn into hundreds. Police were inundated by phone calls about students gathering in places across the downtown area and on campus. “The cause of this specifically was social media,” Nelson said. “If there were any clowns with this many students out there and with our police responding to calls, we would have ran into it. Some photos we’ve seen were photoshopped or incidents from across the country.” The only real clown sighting, Nelson said, was a screen shot of a clown projected onto Beaver Hill Apartments. The Centre County incident is just the latest in a nationwide spate of clown-related hysteria. Within the last 24 hours, there are reports of creepy clowns popping up in New Hampshire, Delaware, Texas, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon and New Mexico. Several are around college campuses, like the University of Connecticut and SUNY Cortland. Many of the reports have been called “unfounded” by police.
