Creepy Clown Sightings in South Carolina Cause a Frenzy

At the edge of dark, dark woods in South Carolina, children have been telling adults that a group of clowns have been trying to lure them into the cluster of trees. They say the clowns live deep in the woods, near a house by a pond.

This tale sounds like a mishmash of newspaper clippings and pages ripped from Stephen King novels, but these are actually details taken from a report filed by the sheriff’s office in Greenville County, S.C., last week, after several residents at an apartment complex there said that people in clown makeup had been terrorizing both children and adults.

Several children said that clowns were offering them money to follow them into the woods, close to the house by the pond. (The police say they have found no evidence of clown paraphernalia at the house.)

A woman walking home late one night said she had seen a “large-figured” clown waving at her from under a streetlight, the police said. (She waved back.) And another woman said her son had heard clanging chains and a banging noise at his front door. In these cases, people who reported clown sightings refused to give their names to the police.

The police don’t know whether the stories are coming from the imaginations of children or something sinister is afoot, but panicked residents seemed to be taking the law into their own hands: The Greenville sheriff’s office investigated reports that residents of the apartment complex may have fired shots in the direction of the wooded area.

Master Deputy Sheriff Ryan Flood said Tuesday that the authorities had not confirmed any of these sightings but said that extra deputies were patrolling the apartment complex. Property managers were also distributing fliers that warn children against walking in the woods alone at night.

And the calls to the police continue: On Monday, a child at a different complex phoned the police to report another clown sighting.

A similar incident like this happened in NYC a few years ago. The NYPD tracked this clown down and put a stop to it quickly.

Reports of Creepy Clowns in Woods Spooking Residents of Greenville, S.C.

Multiple reports that menacing clowns are lurking in the woods — sometimes, allegedly, offering kids cash to follow them — have the residents of Greenville, S.C., looking over their shoulders and even brandishing guns.

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said it has boosted patrols around the Fleetwood Manor apartment complex after it learned that men opened fire into woods behind the complex last week. Residents told a deputy that the men were spooked by what an incident report described as "recent clown activity."

A purported picture of one of the clowns — which NBC News hasn't been able to verify — was posted Tuesday to Twitter.

According to the incident report, multiple residents, some of them children, said they saw the clowns — who they said were carrying flashing green laser lights — creeping around on the night of Aug. 21.

Some of the kids said the clowns showed them "large amounts of money," according to the investigative report. But when the deputy canvassed the abandoned house the kids said they'd been lured to, nothing suspicious was found.

Donna Arnold, a Fleetwood Manor resident, said her son was one of the kids who saw a clown.

By day, the woods behind the Fleetwood Manor apartment complex in Greenville, S.C., appear peaceful. But at night, scary clowns come out to menace their children, residents say. WYFF-TV via NBC News Channel

"At first, I thought he was telling a fib, and I said, 'Go in the house, and we'll talk about this when I get in,' because I didn't want it all over the place," Arnold told NBC station WYFF.

But the next day, "30 kids ... come up to me and said, 'Ms. Donna, Ms. Donna, there's clowns in the woods, there's clowns in the woods.' My child was with me, so I knew they had to see something. There was more than one kid that seen them, so I feel confident that he was telling the truth."

Managers of the complex circulated a flier last week asking residents to "ensure your children's safety — keep them in the house during night hours."

"At no time should a child be alone at nights, or walking in the roads or wooded areas at night," the flier said.

Odd sightings of clowns causing alarm aren't new.

In September 2013, a clown prowling the street...in England led to a police investigation. It later emerged that he was simply a college student on his wa...ittle girl.

And as recently as earlier this month, a gruesome-looking clown carrying black balloons terrorized Green Bay, Wis. Police said that he was harmless and that there was no law against walking around in public in a clown costume.

Creepy Clown Terrorizes Green Bay 0:37

The Green Bay case, it turned out, was a promotional stunt for a movie.

And there's persistent speculation that that could be what's behind the sightings in Greenville.

Speculation is centered on horror movie director Rob Zombie, pictured in concert Aug. 2 in Austin, Texas, as perhaps being behind clown sightings in Greenville, S.C., where his new killer-clown movie, '31,' has a sneak preview Friday. Manuel Nauta/REX/Shutterstock / Shutterstock

Commenters on horror movie forums point out that gore movie director Rob Zombie, ex-front man of the band White Zombies, has a new movie, called "31," opening soon.

It's about a gruesome game, "the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns," according to its promotional materials — which, in fact, prominent...ure clowns.

Sneak previews are Friday. One of the preview theaters is in Greenville.

Saban Films, the movie's distributor, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Creepy overweight clowns in a forest. It's one of two things

1. Cameron from Modern Family

2. John Wayne Gacy's ghost, anyone who does not know who John Wayne Gacy is, look him up, if you can't be bothered. John Gacy was a so called pillar of the community in Chicago in the 1970s who helped at risk kids by teaching them building as a trade and performing in children's hospitals and birthday parties as Pogo the clown, he was also in the Democratic party and the Jaycees, a photo of him exists shaking the hand of Rosalind Carter until.

.

January 1978, Police react to a tip off of a missing 15 year old boy called Robert Piest who went missing and was last seen with Gacy. Gacy owns up to his disappearance and murdering him. He confesses to murdering several boys after having sex with them. Police investigate his basement in his house and find at least 35 bodies of teenage boys in various states of decomposition. Mostly the boys had been social outcasts and lured back to Gacy's house with the promise of beer, girls and a job. Once there Gacy either drugged them or got them drunk, he then got violent and had brutal sex and torture with the boy, then killing him and dumping him in the basement underneath. Gacy entertained dignataries and people above in his spotless house, while corpses of boys decayed in the basement crawlspace.

.

Gacy was convicted of the 32 murders and some of the boys were never identified, most were white and age between 15 and 22, some were Black and Hispanic and there were apparently many more that were never solved or identified. It is believed Gacy could have buried bodies on various building sites and dumped in rivers, in fact any house in suburban Chicago built by Gacy in the 1970s, is likely to have the decaying remains of a catamite underneath it or in the concrete.

.

Gacy was sentenced to death in 1979, but it took until to 1994 to execute them. Gacy was descended from poor and rough Polish people, but was very intelligent and precocious, he was believed to be satanic and did a series of eerie paintings of him dressed as Pogo in prison and submitted to interviews. Kept in isolation as paedophiles were often killed by other inmates. Finally in 1994 he was exceuted, the saddest thing being that no one suspected he was a deranged murderer until they found the bodies, none would suspect big gentle John the man who gave everything to the less fortunate in society.

.

Gacy'sghost has been seen in various places and South Park and a recent program about a haunted hotel have featured him, he is a piece of American folk lore and is often ranked next to Jeffrey Dahmer and Bianci and Buono along the most notorious murderers of the late 20th century. Do you think Gacy wanted a warmer climate rather than freezing Chicago.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Reports of Creepy Clowns Spread to More Cities: 'It Is Not Funny,' Police Say

There have been reports of more clowns in more cities spotted lurking in the woods.

In the past month, police in the Carolinas have received multiple reports from people claiming clowns with white-painted faces were acting strangely in the area – at least once attempting to lure kids into the woods with money.

The reports have fueled speculation that the sightings could be a hoax, or possibly even morbid fans trying to promote the 2017 movie release of Stephen King's It, about an evil clown known as Pennywise that terrorized a group of young boys.

One local TV station wondered if Rob Zombie's upcoming film, about a group of kidnapped carnival workers, might be involved in guerrilla marketing – but the distributor said they were not.

"If this is a hoax or publicity stunt it is not funny," Greensboro police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen tells PEOPLE. "It is alarming to the public and a drain on police resources. We just don't know at this point, because we haven't had the chance to interview any clowns."

The latest sighting occurred on Tuesday, when a man brandishing a machete chased a clown into the woods near an apartment complex in Greensboro, North Carolina, police said.

The person, who was wearing a scary clown mask, red curly wig, yellow dotted shirt, blue clown pants and clown shoes, ran back into the woods and disappeared from view, according to police.

"We don't know why he was there or what he was doing there," Danielsen says. She says officers scoured the area, but couldn't find anyone.

© Provided by TIME Inc. While it's not illegal to dress as a clown in Greensboro, Danielsen says the city has an ordinance that prohibits people from wearing a mask within city limits.

The police department, she says, is also discouraging "copycat behavior."

This has terrified my 12 year old daughter. I didn't know she had such a fear of clowns until last year, when we went to a haunted trail, which happened to have "Killer Clowns" on the trail. mad That's when we discovered her fear of clowns. She admitted that she had been afraid of them before then, had nightmares about clowns, but just never let us know. There was a report that one of the clown sightings happened about 6 miles from our house. She has been absolutely terrified to go outside since the kids at school started talking about it. sad

These pranks aren't funny. It's bad enough that adults are scared but it's beyond despicable when children are so traumatized that they live in terror of stepping outside their front door. It's evil.

Clowns sighted in McDuffie County, parents worried

Tuesday, September 13th 2016, 9:42 am CDTWednesday, September 14th 2016, 10:21 am CDT

MCDUFFIE COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

Reports of clowns hanging around residential areas in South Carolina have been making national headlines. And now, reports of clowns are coming out of McDuffie County.

Chief Deputy Ronnie Williamson says the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office has received two calls reporting clown sightings in the county. At 11:46 p.m. on Sept. 11, a caller reported seeing a clown standing on the side of State highway 221 between Hobbs Road and the Jefferson County line. And on Sept. 13 at 6:37 a.m., a caller reported at clown chasing children from a school bus stop in the area around Davis Circle.

"Both of them were running, he's like 'mom mom there's a man chasing us in all black and a clown suit,'" said Caris Frails, who called the police after the sightings.

Frails couldn't believe what she was hearing from her kids. Two people -- dressed as clowns, standing near the bus stop, scaring kids.

"There are these sightings out about clowns here, clowns there, but when it hits close to home, that's a whole different story," said Frails.

Frails called the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office and they are taking the report very seriously. The school board and sheriff's office both monitoring
the stop until further notice.

"We didn't think it would happen in McDuffie County but it seems like it has," said Major Ronnie Williamson.

Major Williamson says even if these clowns are just clowning around, it could wind up with someone getting seriously hurt, as people try to protect themselves.

"It's going on throughout the country it seems like, and what could be an innocent scare could lead to someone getting hurt," said Major Williamson.

One mom at the bus stop this morning says she couldn't make out a description since it was dark out, but they were there.

"We came out right here, and the clowns were standing right here behind this house and they were scaring the kids," said Brenna Dove.

Frails will be taking her kids to the bus stop herself from now on.

"When you get to my kids, and they were as terrified as they was this morning, you have crossed the line," said Frails.

Chief Deputy Williamson says the sheriff's office is taking the sightings seriously and will press criminal charges once the suspect or suspects are caught.

Nah, it's not supernatural. There was one adult with a machete that had actually chased one of the clowns back into the woods. That happened in North Carolina. It's interesting to me that they seem to be occurring around apartment complexes though.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The circus may be coming to town.

After several clown sightings have been reported in recent weeks — primarily in Southern states such as South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and most recently Alabama -- a new clown threat claims to be targeting Montgomery schools.

A newly created Facebook account named Bingerman Clownferd, which has since been deleted, began posting about visiting Montgomery schools last week. This weekend, Clownferd caused a stir on social media with a post listing which Montgomery schools would be visited.

The posts included vulgar language and threats of violence and began the day after Flomaton Police Department arrested two juveniles and an adult for a similar threat that caused a soft lockdown at Flomaton schools.

"I'm the southlawn clown I saw all of you all today at school I watched y'all walk home ik who y'all are if I don't get u tonight it will be monday (sic)," Clownferd posted on Sept. 16.

Montgomery Public Schools Senior Communication Officer Tom Salter said the school is taking the threat seriously.

“They arrested three people in south Alabama (last week) making threats to a school in Flomaton. It may just be a copycat thing, but we’ve been talking to law enforcement all weekend. We’ve taken all the precautions we need to take,” Salter said.

In 11 years as MPS senior communication officer, Salter has not seen anything like this.

“It’s the first time I remember anything associated with clowns but it’s no laughing matter,” Salter said. “We got a few messages from parents and one or two from teachers mainly making sure we were aware of it, which we were. We always encourage anybody who hears of any concern to reach out to us. There may be one we haven’t heard of.”

Troy Police Department announced Monday that two teens who were similarly clowning around in Troy were apprehended. No charges were filed, but Troy PD confiscated the teens' masks and Facebook account used to threaten violence against Troy residents.

The teens are students at Charles Henderson High School.

In some cases, the clown sightings have seemingly been pre-Halloween pranks meant to unnerve locals. In other cases, the threat has been more serious. Bibb County Sheriff’s Office was called Sept. 13 after reports of clowns chasing children away from bus stops. In Greenville County, S.C., patrols have increased after reports of clowns trying to lure children into the woods.

And Monday in Irondale, a high school was on lockdown after a social media post warned of clowns showing up to the campus.

Shades Valley High School, which is just east of Birmingham, was locked down Monday after a student alerted authorities to Facebook posts hinting that clowns might show up to the school.

Irondale police Officer James Lewis, a school resource officer, says "there was no threat."

Spike in creepy clown sightings, with more arrests across US

http://www.aol.com/article/news/2016/10/01/spike-in-creepy-clown-sightings-with-more-arrests-across-us/21484591/

The creepy clown craze spooking the nation reached a fevered pitch last month with at least a dozen people arrested for taking part in the menacing stunt or for making false reports, according to police.

Now, various communities are stepping up patrols — with one suburban Cincinnati town ...tra police at its football games Friday — while warning against clown-costumed copycats.

"Our citizens are frustrated with everything going on in society and this is another issue to address," Christopher Nacco, the sheriff of Pasco County, Florida, told NBC News in an email Saturday following a spate of claimed sightings.

"We are warning teens and young adults not to get involved in this fad, of dressing up as clowns to cause fear," Nacco added, "because eventually someone is going to perceive their actions as a threat and take justice in their own hands."

Reports of costumed characters sprung up like urban folklore. In late August in Greenville County, South Carolina, children reported spottin...the woods and showing them "large amounts of money."
