Pokémon Go is being used by armed robbers to lure gamers into their trap Pokémon Go is being used by armed robbers to lure gamers into their trapIncident in Missouri leads to police warning image: http://nme.assets.ipccdn....cle_x4.jpg POKEMONArmed robbers in the US have used new video game Pokémon Go to lure "unwitting victims" into areas of "seclusion" before carrying out their crimes.
Pokémon Go - released to much fanfare last week - is an augmented-reality edition of the popular game franchise and sees the fictional creatures superimposed into real life settings. The game has already attracted controversy, with police in Australia issui...mer safety that users should be aware of their surroundings, while it has also been reported that a gamer found a dead body while playing the game. The Guardian now reports that armed robbers in O'Fallon, Missouri used the game's multi-player feature - which allows users to congregate at a specific location - to entrap victims. "Using the geolocation feature, the robbers were able to anticipate the location and level of seclusion of unwitting victims," Sgt Bill Stringer said. Four suspects, all aged between 16 and 18, were later arrested and charged with first degree robbery. They are also thought to be connected to robberies in other nearby counties. love me some senator al franken :
Sen. Franken asks Pokémon Go creator: Why all the privacy problems? What's being shared and with whom? And why not an "opt-in" system?
Earlier this week, we learned that the insanely popular mobile gaming app Pokémon Go requested full access to users' Google accounts when activated on iOS. Niantic said that it was a mistake, and the issue was corrected in an update for the app. Yesterday, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) sent a letter (PDF) to game creator Niantic asking the company to explain that issue, as well as some of the other privacy choices in the game. The letter notes that Pokémon Go collects profile and account information, location data, and data "obtained through Cookies and Web Beacons." The game also asks permission to do things like control vibration and prevent the phone from sleeping. Franken wants to know what information and functions exist to support and improve services, and what's being gathered for "other purposes." Further ReadingFranken, the top Democrat on the Senate Privacy and Technology Subcommittee, also asks if Niantic would consider making more of the information gathering "opt-in" rather than requiring users to "opt out" if they don't want data collected. He also wanted to know what third parties The Pokémon Company shares information with, and what kind of parental consent is obtained with regards to the personal information of children. The game has been downloaded about 7.5 million times in the US, Franken noted in a press release accompanying the letter. "While this release is undoubtedly impressive, I am concerned about the extent to which Niantic may be unnecessarily collecting, using, and sharing a wide range of users' personal information without their appropriate consent," stated Franken. Franken wants the company to respond to his questions by August 12.

It's funny how any time something like this is successful there are always stories like this in the news warning people against it. Like when the 3DS came out and offered 3D gaming without the need for 3D glasses and the papers were full of stories warning parents about how it will make your child go blind. Which was later proven to be bullshit and it turns out that playing games in 3D is actually better than playing on a 2D screen. Or when any Grand Theft Auto game is released and despite it being for adults only, the media is full of stories about warping children's minds with the dreaded "violent and sexual content". It will be interesting to see what will happen if someone dies of a heart attack while playing a horror game on the Playstation VR. I'm sure there are politicians out there salivating at the prospect of it so they can come out and condemn Sony and win a few extra votes from the uninformed in the process. As for this pokemon thing, I'm not sure what it is exactly but it seems to be doing well so I'm sure we'll hear a lot more horror stories like this in the weeks and months ahead.

The game has a disclaimer at the start saying be aware of your surroundings at all times so it's really up to the individual if they hurt themselves playing the game. If anything it's got people to move around and it's a clever way to get folks to get some exercise by walking around to capture some Pokemon. Also i find the Nintendo made games have universal appeal to everybody especially like Mario, anyone can and should play that game, even the OG one. Doesn't matter how old somebody is you can like and play video games at any age, they are like a hobby. Plus nothing wrong with Pokemon you got grown folks dressing up like Pony's and all power to them too. So much hatred in this world today that doing fun stuff should be encouraged.

Pokemon Go Still No Go in Japan But Government Warns Users About Its Dangershttp://www.forbes.com/sites/jboyd/2016/07/21/pokemon-go-still-no-go-in-japan-but-government-warns-users-about-its-dangers/#1590b2506a08 Japan may be the home of Nintendo’s Pokemon multibillion dollar game and anime franchise, but the latest smash hit Pokemon Go game for the Apple iPhone and Android smartphones is still to be launched here. Yet that hasn’t stopped government officials from issuing warnings not to play the game in dangerous areas, when walking and cycling, and to take care not to fall victim to heat stroke when playing it this summer. During a press briefing today, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the game was “a success overseas and it’s something we are very happy about.” He added, “We want players to enjoy playing it but in a safe manner.” For this reason, the National center of Incident readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity (NISC) issued a warning yesterday about being taken in by fake apps and suggested players not use their real names when playing. The augmented reality game inserts cute Pokemon monsters (the name is a contraction of Pocket Monsters) into real-time video of a GPS smartphone taken via the device’s camera. The player then has to try and capture the monster, of which there are various kinds, and train it to battle.
The game has proved to be a phenomenal hit in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia and New Zealand. It was rumored to be released in Japan on Wednesday, but various media reports say that leaked emails about its imminent launch gave Nintendo and US co-creator Niantec pause, given the likelihood their servers would be overwhelmed with users trying to download the game. Reports from around the globe say that addicted players so engrossed in searching for the Pokemon monsters have been involved in traffic accidents and other dangerous incidents. Pokemon World, for instance, a US unofficial online fan site that tracks all things Pokemon, reported that two men in Encinitas, California in search of the monsters fell off a cliff after climbing over fences meant to keep the public away from the edge. Both are said to be in stable condition. But the site also warned that a number of accident reports are turning out to be hoaxes and are publicized in order to bring traffic to websites.

Some moron put a Pokemon on my cul-de-sac and now I have zombie kids walking up and down my street all day and night, heads down, thumbs clicking, oblivious to the world around them. I guess it's good they are outside but the truth is that with their heads buried in their phones, they probably have no idea they ARE outside.
