Around the holliday season some people watch The Sound of Music, while others watched Its a Wonderful life....but my go to film was a classic from the 80s The Last Dragon (1985) and this year for my B'day I finally got it on Blu-Ray cloud9 woot! In a nuttshell its about a young man who searches for the "master" to obtain the final level of martial arts mastery known as The Glow. Along the way, he fights an evil martial arts expert named Sho'nuff (the Shogun of Harlem) and rescue a beautiful VJ Laura Charles from an obsessed music promoter Eddie Arkadian. I know it was made on a low budget, it was cheesy and most of the peformances are over the top, but it was a memorable film because it had alot of great one liners, a cool soundtrack, a hot leading man in Taimak and it had Vanity in it biggrin and finally a great message that we all have the glow within. I have lost count how many times I've seen this fiilm and out of 5 it give it 5 popcorn Its a guilty pleasure and I highly recommend it.

A man alone on a street, wearing white, he is kicking high in the air. The cityscape fills the background, in the sky on the left is the face of a woman, and on the left a man punching upwards, his fist like a star.

Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall (2016) - A look at the life of the late pop star Michael Jackson from his early days at Motown Records to the release of his hit 1979 album, Off the Wall.

The archival performance footage is great. The choice of some of the celebrities interviewed is questionable though (I'm looking at you Kobe Bryant). 3.5/5

Thanks it was better than the BAD doco, but some of the celebs interviewed were dodgy eg. John Legend hmph! . The live footage was freakin amazing (note to the estate please release all the Jackson's concerts on dvd/blu-ray!!!!!!) and it was nice to see a doco put the emphasis back on MJ music and not the caricature the tabloids and certain parts of the media are so hell bent onto this misunderstood, flawed genius.

We just watched "Seven Years In Tibet" (recorded from film 4)

I liked it... the cinematography was beautiful - and Brad Pitt's accent was to die for!!!

Anything with David (Naked) Thewlis is always worth a peek (married my teenage crush Anna Friel razz )

Oh...and then she started watching Magic Mike...after seeing Olivia Munn's tits...I came onto the.org biggrin

A Brad Pitt film that I haven't seen omfg thanks I definately gonna check this out biggrin

Your welcome!

Apparently it was panned at the time - and in competition with Scorsese's project "Kundun"

I think Tibet was topic du jour in Hollywood at the time

I was being a bit tounge-in-cheek about Brad's accent... it was not good! But you forget about it after a while

Let me know what you think...

except Nasty Girl of course..she owned that shit bow

Lifeboat (Alfred Hitchcock/John Steinbeck, 1944)

Our worst fears and prejudices grasp at what little remains adrift in the lonely echo of the awesome Atlantic after a German torpedo discloses its point of departure. Here for the duration humanity is wrestled amongst the tight quarters of class, sex, and race. The horror ebbing and flowing aimlessly preordained with the bellow of an agreed-upon resolve that intermittently lifts the sail.

This ensemble cast — almost as captivating in its participated claustrophobia as the collective sweat of "12 Angry Men" — perhaps finds a way (you be the judge) through to the sinking of that which separates us from each other.

No pull-away gloss of happily-ever-after. No "wow" moment of freeze-frame reflection. And certainly no fish-out-of-water dialogue to shake loose this our precious cargo. The ending is philosophically abrupt. Perhaps our divine will (or whatever you choose to name it) is far too often squandered until after the waves take their final exhalations.

4.5 out of 5

The Great Beauty (2013)

Lives up to its title; it's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. It does for Rome what Woody Allen's films did for New York. Jep Gambardella (played to perfection by Toni Servillo) is the best-dressed character I've ever seen in a film. Had the film had better editing in the third act, which went on a little long and (IMHO) got a little pretentious, I'd give it 5 stars. But I loved it.

Last night I attended a Prince event called "Pancakes and a Movie". It was awesome! We ate great pancakes and omelets, watched some Prince videos, and then viewed "Under the Cherry Moon". Guess what?

"Under the Cherry Moon" is a MASTERPIECE. I thought it was phenomenal!

I have spent the better part of this day trying to remove my Prince fandom from my perception of UTCM. I think I've done a pretty good job, and I STILL think this movie is great.

First point - Prince didn't write it. A lady named Becky Johnston did. It was her first screenplay. She went on to co-write the sxreenplay for "The Prince of Tides" for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, so she is no slouch. But mainly, remember that Prince didn't write this movie.

But he sure made it brilliant.

His comedy is other-worldly. So is Jerome Benton's. I laughed my butt off over and over at those guys. And not because it was Prince - although I'm sure seeing him as "out of character" was partly the reason he was so funny - but mainly because the lines were funny and the deliveries were perfect.

And the clothes! With all due respect to namepeace, I can't believe anyone in film ever dressed more awesomely than Prince did in UTCM. Granted, he's the only guy that could have pulled that off, but his wardrobe was dripping with perfection. Everything he wore was the coolest thing ever.

The production was incredible. Nice, France was so beautiful. I want to find that white piano on the side of the mountain! I bet Prince wanted to film there but they wouldn't let him. Too bad, it was like that was built for Prince. Everything was just so cool.

Filming it in black and white was absolutely the right decision. It's so different, and it's unforgettable.

If this movie isn't a cult hit already, it should be. This is the kind of movie that could be shown every Saturday night at midnight, and I bet the theater would be packed each week. It's just so funny - until the end, of course.

If you're on Prince.org, you know how it ends so this isn't a spoiler. The only problem I had with the ending was the blood coming out of Prince's mouth. I think it would have been more in keeping with the movie's tone if no blood had been shown at all. But that is the ONLY criticism I can come up with. Everything else about this movie is great.

I hadn't seen UTCM in probably 25 years. I remember not being all that impressed with it. But now?

The movie holds up incredibly and I appreciate how funny it is. I really do think this movie is one of the all-time greats.

I give "Under The Cherry Moon" Five White Pianos on the Side of a Mountain out of Five White Pianos on the Side of a Mountain. BTW, here is that piano!

And also, everyone needs some of this!

Last night I watched The Martian (2015). It's about an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead after a freak storm, and he has to find a way to send a signal to Earth to let them know he is alive and needs saving. It was a feel good castaway fantasy film, had a cool soundtrack and I liked it, but it dragged on a bit.....and I noticed that this was the second space related film that Jessica Chastain has been in lol the other being Interseller (2014). Out of the space survival themed films of recent years, I preferred Gravity (2013), because of the intense special effects and that fact it was only 1 hr and 30 mins. Out of 5 I give The Martian 4 popcorn Gravity gets a 4.5 popcorn and Intersteller gets a 3.5 popcorn because of its Contact (1997) like vibe which I found annoying (really its all about your dad seriously shrug ) 2.5 popcorn

Another film with Jessica Chastain in it lol I liked it, it was beautifully shot and the performances were really good, especially Brad Pitt. Out of all the Terrence Malick films it is in my top five, I give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 popcorn . The other films I liked are;

1. Days of Heaven (1978) 5 out 5, and that music score is to die for.

2. Badlands (1973) 4.5, it stays with u, and Martin Sheen does remind me of James Dean lol .

3. The Thin Red Line (1998) 4 a more philosophical view of war,.

4. Tree of Life (2011) see above

5. The New World (2005) 3 out of 5, a more realistic re-telling of Pocahontas .

i just upgraded my tv, so i've been re-watching some old favorites. last night was 'magnolia'...

fucking brilliant. when people talk about the art of american cinema, this is the movie that should be held as the shining pinnacle. the performances, the premise, the casting (tom cruise in a career justifying role, and melora walters?! jfc!), the visuals, the absurdity...it really doesn't get better than this in my opinion. it's 3 hours of cinematic bliss.

contrarily, i recently attempted to watch the ultimate edition of 'batman v superman', which also clocks in at 3 hours...what a slog. this movie is an indefensible piece of garbage. i turned it off at batman stepping on superman's neck, superman whining 'maaarrrrtthaaa, must save maaarrtha...'. tripe.

I loved Magnolia up until the end. Then it got stupid. Tom Cruise was brilliant though.

I think people are a bit hard on Batman v Superman. The "Martha" scene seems to be the main focus of the criticisms but aside from it being a little heavy handed, I thought it made sense. Batman no longer sees Superman as this potentially dangerous alien, and instead sees some humanity in him. It is a bit strange that Superman suddenly begins calling his mother by her name, but like I said, it's not perfect. Ben Affleck is my favourite live action Batman though. That Batmobile chase and the fight scene against Lex's hired goons are two of the best moments in any superhero movie.

Saw Bad Moms last night. Mila & Christina were excellent, they've really developed into great actressess. First half of the movie was hilarious, the ending seemed anticlimactic though. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I think (17-year-old memory) it connects the huge disparate ensemble of stories that have all reached their climax of grief, depression, and depravity, and wraps them all up (and the audience) in a type of otherworldly bizarreness that acts as a shared disbelief for us all. It's a biblical plague promised by God in the bible (Exodus 8:2, referenced throughout the film) that felt to me at the time an almost optimistic relief valve. Just at that moment everyone is about to burst, suddenly so do the heavens.

It felt oddly joyous to me. Like no matter how awful things get for us in this experience, it can get even worse—or in some strange way, experiencing the power of something far greater than self (God/Nature) can perhaps bring about some level of relief, or at least respite.

Last night I watched the new Jason Bourne (2016) film, what can I say? I give it a 4 out of 5 popcorn it had everything u expect in this franchise, lots of action, great locations and Matt Damon who must say looks pretty amazing without his shirt on drool3 yes I'm not afraid to say I like beefcake. If are gonna do an action film, training for six months and only eating protein to buff up your muscles etc I want shirtless action.....even if u are in fight like Matt does so well in this film, u will know what I mean when u watch the film. In a nutshell its about Jason being is drawn out of hiding after 10 years, to uncover hidden truths about his past. However, little does he know that the CIA have also activated "Operation Ironhand", the successor to Operations Treadstone and Blackbriar, in an attempt to hunt him down and bring him back into their clutches. The rest of the cast is pretty solid, however Tommy Lee Jones is still playing a Tommy Lee Jones type of character in this film lol So if u like the previous Bourne films like I did, you will enjoy this....and I plan to get this on blu-ray to add to my Bourne collection. Is this the best one in the series?......no, my fav are as follows popcorn ;

1. The Bourne Identity (2002) 5 out 5

2.The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) 4.5 out of 5

3. Jason Bourne (2016) 4 out of 5

4.The Bourne Supremacy (2004) 4 out of 5

5.The Bourne Legacy (2012) 2.5 my least fav of the series, Jeremy tried but I found his character boring, and I couldn't get into the film and didn't care whether he lived or died. I've read that they are gonna make the next one with Jeremy for 2018 and I pray that this time around his character isn't so bland and predictable.

Last night we saw the movie that YOU need to see - "Bad Moms". Heck fire, this movie is two hours of non-stop laughs!

Now, this might come as a shock to you, but we went to see this one at the Star Cinema Grill, because they serve booze. Also, they have assigned seating and guess what? There was someone in our seats! We had seats I5 and I6, but there was a young couple sitting in them, and they already had food delivered, and were in the middle of eating it. I said, as nicely as I could with a giant smile on my face, "I never thought I'd say this in a movie theater, but you guys are in our seats". Turns out they had I15 and I16, and thought the "I" on the seats was a "1". So they thought "I5" was actually "15". Honest mistake, but my wife told me I was rude for making them move. Wait....what? Those are my seats, that I picked out specifically online! Where were WE supposed to sit? In THEIR seats? Guess what? There was somebody else in THEIR seats! It was mass confusion but I made sure we got our seats. I had to soothe my wife's unreasonable opinion of my heretofore unquestioned diplomatic abilities. You know what that meant, right?

Wine! Lots and lots of wine!

OK, we were going to have lots and lots of wine anyway.

I specifically chose this movie and this venue because I knew this would be an event. A PTA Moms-Booster Club Moms-Helicopter Moms-Sportsball Moms kind of event - and I was right! Of the total audience, I bet there were only about 10 dudes. The rest of the audience was made up of packs of PTA moms, taking selfies in front of the movie poster, selfies in their seats, selfies when they went to the bathroom (I'm guessing on that one but you know I'm probably right). It was AWESOME! I added to the festive atmosphere by periodically yelling out things like "You go, girl!" and "That ain't right!" and "I hear you, sister!" This was apparently much appreciated by all the PTA Moms in attendance, as I seem to recall them electing me King of The PTA Dads at some point.

This movie is pretty raunchy, but funny raunchy. Do not take your school-age kids to see it. Seriously, don't. You're a bad parent if you do. So sayeth the King of The PTA Dads.

But DO go see it with a pack of PTA Moms! Make a night out of it! Get blasted, go to a theater where they serve booze and get even more hammered, and Uber it on home later. I guarantee you will have the most fun of any night this summer!

This is where I'd normally summarize the plot but, what plot? Mila Kunis (who was great in this movie) is an over-worked, over-whelmed mother of two and she catches her husband yanking it online to some girl in a....what do you call it? You know, where you have a video interaction with someone? I forget, but he'd been doing it with the same video chick for 10 months, and was a total loser anyway, so Mila Kunis throws him out of the house.

She happens to meet two other girls from the PTA in a bar, who are an overwhelmed innocent, and a randy divorcee (that's putting it mildly). Oh! And guess who the enemy is?

Kelly Bundy!

Christina Applegate plays a character that is in every way the total opposite of Kelly Bundy. It would have been really cool if her character was named "Kelly Whatever" and you could spend part of the movie saying, "Is that really a married Kelly Bundy? Because if it is, that if F***ING COOL!" And if they'd had a cameo by Bud Bundy, I would have rated this movie as an equal to "Animal House". Seriously, this movie is THAT funny.

But they didn't, so I can't quite put "Bad Moms" up there with The Holy Foursome of "Animal House", "Caddyshack", "Stripes" and "This is Spinal Tap". But it's not far behind!

All kinds of hilarity ensues. Mila Kunis confiscates her loser husband's bright red 1970 Challenger, which has a 440 6-Pak and a brand new white interior from Legendary Interiors (I know the interior is from Legendary Interiors because every Mopar that's ever been restored has an interior from Legendary Interiors. Read any restoration article that's ever been published in any Mopar magazine ever, and you will see that I'm right). There are great lines aplenty - too many to mention. Kind of like "Deadpool". And like my review of "Deadpool", I won't spoil any of them - except for one. It has to do with booty sex. The joke itself is funny, but even funnier will be the reactions of the various packs of PTA Moms in your theater. If you are a dude, you will know EXACTLY when to say "You go, girl!"

Hey, and stay for the credits. There are some really cool things after the movie is over. I won't spoil it, but you will be glad you stayed. I promise.

I give "Bad Moms" 4 1/2 Bake Sales out of 5 Bake Sales. Go see it!

Captain Fantastic (2016)

Had all the makings of a formulaic indie flick - quirky, precocious family on a road trip - but was transformed by great performances. Viggo Mortensen should be in the running for an Oscar nod. Solid, unassuming performances from top to bottom. 2016's Little Miss Sunshine.

I added to the festive atmosphere by periodically yelling out things like "You go, girl!" and "That ain't right!" and "I hear you, sister!" LMAO, did it hit too close to home? Are you a PTA mom? Just kidding. You really didn't find that movie funny? ZOMG, the PTA Moms were busting a gut in our theater! IIRC, your child isn't that old yet, right? Or maybe y'all do the PTA thing (which means "Parent Teacher Association" in case y'all call it something else) differently or better in Ireland than we do it here.

But holey moley, did they hit the nail on the head when it comes to my experience! We had not one but probably 30 Kelly Bundys at our kids' intermediate school (grades 6 - 8). And we had about 100 of them at elementary school! There were some moms that spent the better part of their week at their child's school. It was ridiculous. The only time my parents ever came to my elementary school was when I got sent to the principal (5 times alone in 3rd grade, LOL).

So watching this movie just hit so many right buttons for me. The jokes were PERFECT and the characters were spot-on. How did the PTA moms at your theater like the movie?
