Why Did Cops Raid Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles Restaurants?

I just read this. Hadn't heard anything about it or whether it's all resolved. Anybody know?

Bad news for Gladys Knight. A bunch of chicken and waffle joints bearing the singer’s name were raided and shut down by authorities in Atlanta on Tuesday just before lunch time, leaving many residents hungry.

The Georgia Department of Revenue initiated the raids, which reportedly has to do with an investigation around her son Shanga Hankerson, who runs the operation. During the raids, customers were told to leave and employees were ordered out of the premises as the agents took files and computers as well as the contents of safes. Hankerson is allegedly being investigated for $1 million in missing revenue, but authorities say Gladys is completely in the clear.

Now you know Big Mouth Wendy Williams talked about it...Wendy's Goons got the 411....Gladys's son Shanga was living above his means and not paying taxes...Shanga was blowing the profits on nonsense material Shit..Wendy also said the IRS gave Shanga about TWENTY chances (because of who his Mama is) to pay what he owed but he kept dodging. They wanted to go after The Empress but her Lawyers said she let her son use her name to bring in bizness but the three joints & PROFITS were ALL his and his name...Gladys said she has NOTHING to do with the joints that bear her name (other than helping promote them and making sure the Cooks get the food right whenever she drops by)....I agree with Wendy, Gladys needs to beat him upside his head.....His mother was NICE enough to let him use her name and he's acting STUPID...

I've heard that. But I wonder if one limits the "Sunday dinner" feast to only an occasional thing as it originally was, and ate the rest of what would have been considered "slave" food (that which was grown in their gardens) regularly, grits and meal, eating meat rarely would it be the same problem? I mean if you ate a sunday dinner feast almost everyday of the week of practically anybody's food it wouldn't really be that good for you.

I think it depends on what you would call a "Sunday dinner" which is probably different in Okinawa,
Japan and countries who exist upon the "Mediterranean diet" than it is in the deep South, which is
where I am from. And typically, I think the rule of thumb is "everything in moderation." However,
soul food contains a large amount of fats, sugars, and salt: yet fats, sugars, and salt are addictive so
that stuff is most likely not consumed in moderation.

I like watching preaching videos on Youtube as I enjoy assessing Black American theology as it is
practice and exhorted in mostly non-denominational churches; and I am not shocked at the sight
of many Black American wo/men who are obviously overweight. That being said, I read an article
a month or two ago which surmised that the participants in that NBC show about obese people
losing weight gained the weight back after the show ended. Why? Because their bodies are pre-
disposed to being, well, I hate to use this word, but "big." In other words, scientists discovered that
some obese people will not be able to maintain significant weight lost because their bodies want to
be overweight. I think that article mentioned only one participant who was able to maintain her
post-show weight.

The article.

Ok, America has an obseity problem, it ain't behind soul food. It's from overindulging on one type of food, over another. The original foods did not contain a lot of sugars, maybe a lot of salt, but not sugar people weren't big simply eating it. It's when the shift came and people could opt to only eat things heavily laden in fats and sugars. Same difference with the fast food industry. When you only eat that, you get the same result.

Seems like anything the body becomes accustom to, it's a struggle to stay away from it, alcohol, cigs, drugs, you name it, it's a life struggle.

The context of my post applies to Southern Black Americans for this is where Knight's restaurants
are located. And the soul food diet consumed by Southern Black Americans is not healthy for reasons
I've already explained. I'm a southerner by culture although I live in Boston and my extended family
eats that diet daily. Anecdotal evidence? Yes. But here and here and here and here and here. So,
make no mistake: I'm not saying ALL Black Americans consume a daily diet of soul food; just that the
Southern Black American diet of soul food is not healthy, and I contend this diet is not reserved for
Sunday dinners but is consumed daily, or, more than one day a week.

I think you misunderstood the context in which I was working within. But I don't know why you did
this for you cannot abstract from my post that I was claiming all obese Americans eat a soul food
diet.

I hear you. Granted I was not raised (and as I think about it never been) in the South. Most of my family is from Ohio, but going back 2 more generations then you get to the South. I'm only going by what I've read. Taking the Mediterran Diet for example, the traditional diet is healthy, but having Lasagna, and pastas, and lamb and chicken and couscous, as the center of your weekly diet, opting out of the leafy greens, and veggies that were traditionally the central part of the everyday diet is not healthy at all. Same difference with soul food, eating meat and starches as the central dishes in the diet as oppose to the original tradition where these things were eaten on special occasions only, and the garden grown foods were the original central daily altered what soul food has come to be. Grubbing on the party food to fill your belly as your everyday eatin don't work for nobody. Trust I know these problems at least ain't about Southern cooking.

(1) Of course, Morning! And this is what I'm claiming: my parents, yes, a small sample size,
but they eat southern soul food most of the week! If 48% of Black Americans are obese, it's
not because they're eating soul food or unhealthy food once a week! And I'm not sure that the
diet of Black American slaves was as healthy as you imagine: cornbread, pork, and greens
flavored with more pork.

(2) Let me make a distinction between southern cooking and soul food: there's a distinction! For
example: Louisiana has Creole and Cajun cuisines; South Carolina has a few disparate cuisines;
so does Texas, Virginia. Soul food? Sure, they have fruits - in cobblers and pies loaded with sugar.
Black tea that is healthy - sure, loaded with sugar. There's even a joke down south: "Do you want
some tea with your sugar"? Greens? Yep - collards, mustard greens that are salted and flavored
with pork (fatback) etc. Black-eyed peas and other beans? Throw that smoked turkey neck in
there with bacon drippin's. Macaroni and cheese. My father eats pig feet; pig ears; chitlins. Why?
Because down South, slave owners gave their slaves offal - that tradition remains. So yeah . . .
Black Americans down south consume that diet more than once a week and it is more integral than
you think.
