Josh Scobee apparently won’t become the New Orleans Saints' 11th kicker in 11 years this season. The veteran was released on Monday, two months after he signed with the team.

That leaves incumbent Kai Forbath as the only kicker on New Orleans roster, for now.

It’s unclear why Scobee was released, as he had just talked Monday at the Saints Hall of Fame golf tournament about his expectation to compete with Forbath this summer. But the Saints did have kickers Connor Barth and Nate Freese in for tryouts this past weekend, so another move could be pending.

Scobee, 33, spent his first 11 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. But he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers last summer and was cut a month later after struggling with injuries.

The Saints signed Scobee in March to compete with Forbath, who joined the Saints midway through last season. Forbath made 9 of 13 field goals for the Saints, including a game-winning 50-yarder in New Orleans’ 52-49 victory over the New York Giants. He made 33 of 34 extra-point attempts.

The Saints also released offensive tackle Bryan Witzmann on Monday and officially announced the signing of undrafted rookie defensive back Jimmy Pruitt from San Jose State.
