Whatever happened to real men in movies?

While watching an old Charlton Heston film, I am taken with the strong male characters that he always seemed to play and it hit me that these kind of real men are almost gone from movies today.

While I'm not a fan of Charlton Heston, I was raised on 80's and 90's action movies like Commando, Predator, First Blood, Die Hard etc. I miss those kinds of heroes in movies.

Art imitating life or...u kno the rest. Over emotional, bitchy, gossiping males are pretty common nowdays. Sperm count dropping at alarming rates 4 some yrs now.
Estrogen in the meat, dairy. Contraceptive pills flushed down the loo's/tap water. Endocrine disrupting chemicals all over the place...

Sad but true. All of this ties into why there is definitely an anti-masclinity agenda on the part of the entertainment & fashion industry. They are implying that being butch is no longer in vogue.

In war u take out the men/warriors first. Leaves the women, children & elderly.

All though that "role" is still out there, it is not as prevalent as it once was. Just like Westerns were popular once, things go in cycles. You also might note that the completely emotional helpless female roles are less prevalent too. You may not need a strong man to save you, if you can save yourself.

Tom Hardy.

I caught the better half of "Child 44" from last year, and he was a beast (in a tough, macho, chivalrous way).

When I grow up I want to be like Tom Hardy in Child 44.

Society has changed in time. I don't remember the movie but there was a movie with Clark gable (I believe) that showed him in a tank top undershirt and it created a huge uproar.

The acceptance of "foul" language has changed as well. A movie could have earned an "x" based on cursing alone. Now nudity, same sex relationships, drug use, and other "taboos" are portrayed commonly in movies.

Stories are now driven by special effects and box office draw Rather than content.

Sadly the days of Steve McQueen, Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman and others, actors who could act and used talents in their craft have been replaced by pretty faces and bodies.

There are still movies with good acting in them...but the old days of Hollywood stars has passed in my opinion

You are thinking of "It Happened One Night." Actually...Clark Gable took off his shirt in that and he wasn't wearing an undershirt, which is what caused the uproar. Sales of undershirts tanked because if a manly guy like Clark didn't wear one, why should anyone else?

It took WWII and uniform requirements for undershirts or t-shirts to bring them back.

I'm old enough to remember the days when men looked like men - and I miss them. (Both the times and the men.)

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
