No I meant LinkedIn itself - what IS it? what does it DO?

It was suppose to be a website for professionals to network with others. I know someone who vets for Corporate American... this was his go to site weed out the liars, posers, and exaggerated credentials of folks who claimed they were this or had that. I'm sure Microsoft bought as another data source...

"network with others"? what does that mean, exactly? How does the website verify that you are, indeed, a professional?

i didn't understand what you meant by "vets for Corporate American"...? do you mean corporate americA? so - somebody told him a lie, and linkedin the truth??? what good would that do?

The website can't and doesn't verify what you do for a living but in the age of computers it's easy to do... in the US. IN our country most job applicants apply via the Internet. In most instances now, job applications go to a 3rd party companies who vet/verify credentials /background checks. You'd be surprise the amount of padding of credentials happen in the US corporate world. He's the CEO, the 1,500 employees do the checking. lol

Here in India, people apply on the net too! And AFAIK, there's absolutely no checking whatsoever (beyond the interviewer actually asking to see physical certificates etc. AT an interview, which, I would hazard a guess, can easily be faked as well! ) lol

hi there! i'm in the process of learning and switching to a Mac computer.

also, i thought people might get a kick out of this article:

Woman Sues Microsoft Over Windows 10 Upgrade She Didn't Want or Authorize, Wins $10,000

“Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update.”

A woman sued Microsoft over a Windows 10 upgrade and ended up winning $10,000, according to a new report from The Seattle Times (via Kotaku).

The woman, Teri Goldstein of Sausalito, California, said a few days after Microsoft released Windows 10 publi... July 2015, the computer at her travel agency business tried to download it without her consent. The update failed and her computer "slowed to a crawl," crashing at times and becoming "unusable for days at a time."

.

"I had never heard of Windows 10," Goldstein said. "Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update."

Goldstein attempted to reach Microsoft's customer support department to fix the problem, but that apparently didn't work, so she decided to take Microsoft to court. She sought compensation for lost wages and to cover the cost of a new computer.

As it would happen, Goldstein won the case, earning a $10,000 judgement, after Microsoft decided not to appeal. A Microsoft representative said the company didn't want to take the legal battle any further to "avoid the expense of further litigation," according to The Times.

Microsoft denied any wrongdoing.

excerpted from link:

A break with tradition

Soon after Microsoft released Windows 10 last year, it began prompting Windows 7 and 8.1 users to upgrade. The large pop-up window, reproduced here from Microsoft's own Windows 10 support site, looks like any other Windows operating system dialogue box.

Windows 10

The old Microsoft Windows 1-0 Upgrade dialogue box.

Image: microsoft

In the far left upper left corner is a static Windows logo and "Get Windows 10." Opposite it, on the right side, is the traditional Window minimize icon and, next to that, a white "X" on a red button. That button, that "X", should mean close without taking any action. That's what it means in virtually all other Window's dialog boxes. That's what it has meant since at least Windows 95, probably earlier, and dialogs in most other OSes work the same. In fact, one could argue that Microsoft invented this particular interface metaphor.

Here's a look at a classic Windows 95 dialogue box. Note the minimize and close icons.

Windows 95

Windows 95

Image: Microsoft

The red "x" in the Windows 10 Upgrade Notification box, however, broke Microsoft's own interface rules — a fact Microsoft cops to in the Windows 10 Support Page:

This notification means your Windows 10 upgrade will occur at the time indicated, unless you select either Upgrade now or “Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade”. If you click on OK or on the red “X”, you’re all set for the upgrade and there is nothing further to do.

In this one-of-a-kind Windows dialogue box, "X" somehow adopted the same meaning as the "OK" button. The only way to stop the upgrade was to select "Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade."

i hadn't really thought about it like that. if this were to be done, i think a better approach would be to publish notices in legal and other newspapers to advertise for participants in a class action suit. i think that would yeild a higher number of class action members

well, generally a plaintiff will retain an attorney, and if that attorney(s) has the know-how they can organize and file a multi-state class action lawsuit against microsoft. i suppose plaintiffs could appear pro se, without an attorney, but i wouldn't want to be the poor person who organized that claim

the word "class" defines a kind of plaintiff - i.e. those who fit into a "class" of individuals who have been wronged. the word "action" means legal action. i worked on the breast implant class action litigation back 20 or so years ago, which involved women from all over the US who'd received implants that failed. in this case, there were so many women who had suffered this way, from a faulty product, that they were considered to be part of a "class" of individuals and the case was litigated on behalf of all of these women. sometimes this type of legal action will arise with a single plaintiff, and then later other plaintiffs are added.

annnnd microsoft changed the windows upgrade dialogue box to its old format, after complaints:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/microsoft-adjusts-windows-10-upgrade-after-complaints/

. . .

The pop-ups themselves caused all kinds of confusion. When users clicked the red "X" in the upper-right-hand corner, thinking they had declined the offer, Windows 10 would instead begin to download automatically. Closing the window apparently was an "agreement" to upgrade to the newer software, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Now that has been changed. This week, Microsoft altered the pop-ups to include different, clearly labeled download options -- "upgrade now," "choose time," and "decline free offer."

"The new experience has clearer options," Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president for Windows and Devices, said in a statement. "If the red-x is selected on this new dialog, it will dismiss the dialog box and we will notify the device again in a few days.

. . .

France gives Microsoft three months to stop Windows 10 from collecting "excessive" user data

By Rob Thubron on July 21, 2016, 3:45 PM

Many US tech companies haven’t found France to be a very welcoming place recently. Authorities in the country told Facebook it must stop tracking non-users and sending data to the States earlier this year, and Google had its Paris headquarters raided by Police in a tax evasion probe last May.

The latest firm to incur the wrath of France’s data protection commission is Microsoft. It seems the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) isn’t very happy with Windows 10, and it’s nothing to do with (thankfully now expired) upgrade nagware.

The CNIL has issued a formal notice to Microsoft stating that Windows 10 “must stop collecting excessive user data” from the ten million people in France who have the OS installed without their consent. The watchdog highlighted the fact that Microsoft records which apps users download and how long they spend on them.

Additionally, the CNIL wants Microsoft to stop using cookies to serve up ads without properly informing users and without offering a way to opt out. It also takes issue with the 4-digit PIN system that lets users access their Microsoft accounts; the Commission says it is insecure as it allows an unlimited number of login attempts.

Finally, there’s the problem of Microsoft continuing to transfer French account holders’ personal data to the US under the Safe Harbor agreement, despite the European Court of Justice ruling it invalid back in October last year.

The CNIL has given Microsoft three months to comply with the notice; if no action is taken, an internal investigator may be appointed who could issue sanctions against the company.

In a statement to Reuters, Microsoft vice president and deputy general counsel David Heiner said the company would work closely with the CNIL over the next few months to understand its concerns fully and "to work toward solutions that it will find acceptable."
