The kids starving commercials

I had a question about the commercials that advertise all the time on TV of kids and dogs starving .theres been plenty of times where I've wanted to help out but I was wondering if I donate money will they actually use my money to help the kids and animals ? Because of my aunt told that a lot of times they are scams and rip offs. Have any of u ever called the numbers on the commercials and actually donated $?

Donate to your local community or to your local pet shelter. It's your best bet.

My uncle worked for one of those charities that send aid to Africa. I remember one time he told me that for every pound (we used pounds instead of euro in Ireland back then) that's given, only 20 pence goes to the actual people in need.
Now, maybe they don't all operate the same way but it makes me wary.
When I want to give to charity, I go to the dogs home and buy loads of food for the dogs. I've actually adopted two dogs too. Or coming up to Christmas, I'll go to the childrens hospital and bring loads of toys. That way, I know my donations are going to the right place.

Donate to the SPCA where you live. The Girls & Boys Clubs of America is another good organization. Or your local food bank.

I remember when they used to show that animal commerical and they were using "In The Arms Of An Angel" as the soundtrack. OMG! I got to a point where I couldn't even watch it anymore because I would always end up crying my eyes out! My heart lies with animals. It's kind of hard for me since I have a cat now but I used to donate cat food to my local humane society regularly. I think ASPCA is great but probably our local shelters can use the help more.

I give all my charitable donations to international charities. It's where the need is the greatest, and I believe it's also where you can generally do the most good with what you can afford to donate. I've been very influenced by Peter Singer's writings on international poverty, and I'd really recommend his books The Life You Can Save and The Most Good You Can Do to everyone.

I personally donate to Deworm the World. Oxfam and Against Malaria.

I certainly agree that everyone ought to think very carefully about where they donate and try to find out what's done with their money. Charity evaluators like Givewell.org are the most effective ways for the average person to look into how donations are spent and how effective they are at saving lives.

Peter Singer's organization also has a list of recommended charities that you can find at their site.

Here is a youtube clip outlining Singer's 'drowning child' argument:
