when you wish upon a star dreams will take you very far. when you wish upon a dream life ain't always what it seems.

here is an additional idea for you to go over seventeendayze. i hope it helps. i know you can, i know you can, i know you can make it happen for you.

dove

sometimes actual visualizing and posting ideas can on a large wall calender in a you space on the wall is a good beginning. (i perfer a calender that's a page by page - my friend likes a dry erase 1 page calender)

so anyway:

1. set small goals like >

-

a. mondey post ideas of things you like to do. maybe 1 thru 7

b. schedule wednesday (or convenient day) to look up monday's job ideas on line

c. schedule friday to post results of the 1 thru 7 search - gleen off what is not condusive to your visions

d. scheudle monday for most favorable job finds

then go on with a monday - wednesday- etc scehdule to continue your goal(s) list.

pretty soon you'll find your you job interest. [it takes consistency and determination]

(just remember to "set goals." )

each small goal met makes way for the larger goals. (remember don't let anyone discourage you.)

Thanks, dear smile I'll keep this in mind smile

I agree that you have to have self-care to make it work, cause you could end up hating that hobby or get burned out from it. Have seen it happen a lot of times

Just make sure that whatever it is you want to do that you do the research, exhaustively so.

I don't know if this will help, but check www.surveymonkey.com - if you can do this research online, it would be great no? smile I have no idea what or how good this thing is, but I just heard someone here use it when he was starting up himself, so - thought I'd tell ya.....

Hey - do you have a website of your work somewhere? Would be great to take a look at it smile

Thanks, I've heard of this website but I never looked into it until now, so thanks for that smile

Today I had another "epiphany" of sorts at work....so, we're in a meeting and being told by senior management that this coming Fall is going to be a very busy season for us and we're getting a lot of business blah, blah, blah....then, we were also informed that the support staff that some people have been practically begging to get hired won't happen, so we'll continue to be stretched thin...Excuse me, why the HELL should I care if business is booming if my financial situation doesn't improve along with it? I mean honestly. Yeah I guess I could be "excited" to learn that (allegedly) business is growing (it could be sinking for all we know) but I was just sitting there like I could care less because it's not like my life is going to suddenly improve in the same way.

I just can't live like that the rest of my life. I can't do it. If I don't come up with my own plan I'd rather live in the woods and survive off berries and spring water....seriously. I can't fathom struggling and living check to check to make someone else richer while I stagnate or fall off completely due to inflation or whatever. Maybe I'm selfish, so be it.

Yes, true. Can't you just tell YOUR BOSS everything you told us?? Surely he doesn't WANT dissatisfied employees who might jump ship?

Out of curiosity, what is this job? What do you do?

Not really - like, some companies give ESOPs, you know? So, obviously your boss would expect that you know about such things...so what's to stop you wanting a piece of the pie? It's an obvious enough emotion......?

Are you talking about stock options? Ha! We don't have those and we don't have any perks at all (unless you count health insurance with high co-pays)...no retirement, etc.

Have you thought about finding a new job? Hating your job and feeling depressed and lost is probably not the best place to be starting from when opting to start a new business.

So, something else just happened that's making me dream of being my own boss one day. I have to be somewhat vague on the details for many reasons but here's something that happened....A few weeks ago, I inquired about working in a different capacity similar to what our independent contractors do. I was told that I didn't have the required number of years (basically a decade) experience and needed to have certain other "criteria" such as knowing about certain kinds of industry information, etc. Well, basically, they were just saying NO...

Fast forward, suddenly, one of the company's clients needs a task done and the company that I work for doesn't have any available contractors in their network who have a particular skill that the client wanted (I'm gonna have to decline to go into detail about the skill). But, my company said, "Well, we are going to assign this assignment to XYZ person but we were wondering if you were interested in going along with them to "help" out since this contractor isn't skilled in that area at all. I said I'd think about it and had to check my schedule (this would have been on a weekend). In the meantime, I was like, well instead of paying me for the time I'm simply requesting standard mileage (as they pay out to all contractors) and instead of compensation can I please just swap out the hours worked and leave early on a regular work day to balance out the extra time. The mileage reiumbursement would have been about the price you pay for a movie ticket and small popcorn but the company basically told me "nevermind". What upset me was that they are going to pay the clueless contractor FIVE TIMES the amount (literally) that I am paid to do my job (if you calculate hourly) but I wasn't going to get one penny nor time off to make up for what would have amounted to have been an entire work day. The guy isn't trained on what I can do but they want me to "help" him but he would have just sat back and had ME do all the work? They already made it clear that I needed YEARS of experience and told me to just "read up on stuff online and you can make it a good goal for you to aspire to". They didn't say anything to me like, "Well, can you help us out this one time and perhaps we can revisit the idea of you doing that kind of work for us in the future" Nothing of the sort. The company is notorious for exploiting people who "give" too much. I had a co-worker who once noticed a major problem with something and they decided to work from home all night, staying up until 1am to fix the problem for the company. They called the next day to say they'd be in the office an hour later than normal and told them why they had a late start due to them staying up so late the night before. Their reward? Being scolded for coming in an hour late and no mention of the employee helping THEM out. Yes, perhaps they could have just said they were running late and YES perhaps they should have expected them to push back but that's just an example of how insane things can be. You have to put your boundaries up or you will be eaten alive.

When I was in my late teens, I thought that I would be the owner of my own business by the time I hit 30. Well, I'm a bit past 30 and this dream hasn't happened yet. For those of you who are business owners/self-employed, how were you able to start your business? Did you have to quit your day job or were you able to work full time and start a business at the same time? I wish I had more control of my life, my schedule and my destiny and I want to put my talents to use to make myself rich instead of making everyone else rich.

I just don't think I'll be happy doing a same old 9-5 and living in a sleepy suburb until retirement and/or death. Someone help me escape the tyranny of mediocrity!!!

You might not like when I'm going to say, but if you had the personality to be entreprenurail, it would manifest itself in ways where you'd be doing that, because thats who you ARE.

I've been self-employed since I was kind of famously fired from a high profile position. Someone told me I was a 'pee-on' and that my career was over. I walked up the street and rented a dance studio, and have been in my own business ever since. Its been 25 years of running my own business.

There's nothing dreamy about it. Do not under any circumstance romanticize it. You will work MORE, not less, you will never turn off your brain because once you realize the more you work the more you MAKE...you start to see down time as something that costs you money. You never know when the next dryspell is so you will always be in GO mode.

I happen to thrive in conditions like that, and while I can't retire, I've navigated myself into the ability to license my stuff to larger organizations now...I still cant stop, I love what I do, but if you think you'll have more control over your life...well you will, but there really is no 'easing' your way from a hobby into a bill-paying small business imo. You either give it all you have or you shouldnt do it at all.

You have to decide if mediocrity and health insurance suits you better than will I have enough business next month to pay for my own health insurance does?

If you need things to be safe, and predictable, you're not a small buisness owner personality. I know I can make someting out of nothing. And I know I'm good at it. And I know I can do it no matter where I land. I knew that when this asshole fired me. You need to innately KNOW. I've never doubted that I could work onmy own, I just did it. And I did it no matter how hard it got. You need to know that its that hard, that daunting, all. the. time.

If you can't take that kind of stress, honey get a hobby and have some fun in your life. Small business isnt for the faint of heart, or for someone who thinks they'll have more freedom. If you LOVE what you do there is freedom in that. I LOVE what I do, like LOVE. You need a drive that pushes you through the fear - if that drive isnt love, you'll fail - and fast.

Sorry to sound dire, but I am always very bluntly real about it --- you dont need a life coach, I dont think you sound like you're built for it. People who are built for it somehow, some way end up in their own thing. When I look back, to when I ws a kid...I used to have lemonade stands, I'd take my bike apart sell the parts, and then go buy a better bike, then do it again, I'd mow lawns, babysit, rake leaves, deliver newspapers, sell my halloween candy....it was there in me from the beginning lololol

How anyone thought I'd ever have a 'job' I dont know....I'm in fitness which lends itself to independence, but I was also the countrys first Creative Director at a nationwide gym chain....so in the corprate culture I managed ot create jobs that suited me, so I was independent even in the job...that eventually fired me for defending my own trademark!

So, all this to say how do you start a small business? You just do. Thats it really, you just DO.

Go back and read what I wrote regarding the situation where my boss basically refused to approve mileage reimbursement and swapping out time off for proposed work on the weekend. I mean, what jerks! They use their employees and then act surprised when no one stays at the company longer than a year. The turnover rate is very high. Only a handful of people have been there longer than a year...

I understand how badly it sucks...but here's what happens when you have a small business that people dont talk about in those empowerment life coach courses:

- landlords - (I was in NYC) rent increases 25% yearly or more on commercial space and thats when you HAVE a lease longer than 5 years.

- airbnb next to, on the same floor as your legit commercial business - god knows what you see when you come in in the morning
- overcharging on repairs, electricty, just because you look like your getting successful

- employees - attempt to steal your clients (they never managed it w/me but they will do dumb shit like that and you have to fire them, instantly)

- attempt to walk with your proprietary stuff, contacts, etc etc

- flat out steal equipment, money, cleaning supplies, you name it

- clients - try not to pay you, if your contracting to larger companies, the REALLY try not to pay you

Taxes: if your a small business you're paying out the a$$ in taxes, the good news: write offs! the bad news is PROFIT, why? TAXES. So I dumped my money back into the business, the write offs for spending are better than taxes on your profit. The good news there is I gave other small biz people work, web designer, tech dude, PR guy, videographer, editing

They'll tell you: outsource!

the reality: go ahead and TRY finding a guy on a freelance website that you can trust with your webhosting info. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. you still have to do everything, then you have to manage people doing the job you're paying them for, and thats another job.

No one will care about your small business but YOU. It doesnt matter if you someone them for a service and you have a deadline and nothings been done.

So, I'm saying in order to put up with, all of the above, IT HAS TO BE LOVE. Or else, you'll fail.

So being in your own business wont shield you from people like your boss, in alot of cases people like your boss will be your clients who wont want to pay you....you will have to deal with that behaviour more often than not. What you do have to do is understand how to diplomatically get what you want at work, because that skill you'll need in SPADES in your own business.
