Black Cats Lives Matter...Adopt one today!

image 1

[Note: Pic borrowed from Facebook - luv4u]

It's called "Black Cat Syndrome"

The numbers are against black animals. One SPCA assessed that 40 percent of the cats taken in were predominantly black. Of those, 35 percent were adopted; 40 percent, euthanized.

Whatever the reason or reasons, the end result is happy, healthy animals being overlooked, and, sadly, euthanized in greater proportions than the general stray animal population.

Consider adopting a black cat or kitten, you really will be truly saving a life.

Here is a movement that i can get behind. My wife has always felt bad for black cats as they tend to be victims of obuse by kids. We are at capacity right now however.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Yeah, you have people who are not even religious who are still 'spooked' by the 'bad luck' thing with black furred cats and the connection to witches.

On Halloween especially people with black cats should not let them out if they do.

Awww, poor kitties. I'm not in a position to take on more but a black cat wouldn't bother me. No really superstitious. But I am curious though, what happens to the other 25%?

Black Cat Appreciation Day: Do You Know Your Melanistic Cats?

Blackcat-Lilith

Today is designated as National Black Cat Appreciation Day. It is a tribute—if you will—to any “solid black” domestic cat of pure or mixed breed pedigree, and, perhaps, some of their wild feline cousins.

The “awareness” and “appreciation” day is, in part, intended to help dispel age-old superstitions concerning black cats. Hopes are that the celebration will popularize these single-colored felids among the demographic of cat owners, potential owners, and “foster parents” in the United States. This is all in light of legendary myths that have lead to the demise of black cats for centuries.

Although some cultures consider the black cat to be good luck, as is the case in the UK, most US residents fear these boldly colored feline companion animals—doing everything they can to avoid crossing the path of a black cat. Presumably, they are also less inclined to take one of these dark colored creatures home.

For staff and volunteers at animal shelters nationwide, it is hoped that black cats, which are usually the last to be adopted, if at all, benefit from this day of heightened black cat awareness.

Despite the reluctance of many to keep black cats, solid black is a permitted color option in 22 cat breeds registered by the US-based Cat Fanciers’ Association.

Melanism, which is also seen in 11 of the 36 wild felid species, produces yellow irises as a result of high levels of melanin in the pigment of these carnivorans. In addition, melanism, the opposite of albinism, is most prevalent in male cats.

...

If you choose to rescue a black cat or any other domestic felid in need, please remember to keep the cats inside or construct an outdoor “catio” enclosure for them.

I also encourage you to read The Cat Whisperer (Random House) by cat behaviorist Mieshelle Nagelschneider. The science-based book is especially recommended if you need to address behavioral issues in multi-cat households or are contemplating relinquishing an animal or rescuing another feline friend.

In my review of the book, I said “The reason people are so mesmerized by house cats is because they are truly miniature versions of lions, tigers, and leopards. Mieshelle explains in an unprecedented and a most accessible way, the behavior of the house cat, with her unique insight into the often misunderstood companion animal that is as wild as we have become civilized.”

I love all cats big and small and especially the black ones. They're beautiful! My appartment is too small to have one, but fortunately there's a friendly black cat walking around in the neighbourhood.

If you ask most people, they will deny being superstitious but in the same breath say they don't like black cats because of the old wives tales they have heard about them. I'm like, well if you believe that baloney, then you are superstitious! They usually look really stupid after that.

I love black cats. I think they are beautiful. When I was looking to adopt a cat last year, surprisingly, I couldn't find one. They had one at a Petco I visited but he was like 3 or 4 years old and he was absolutely stunning! I passed though because I wanted a kitten. But, I wanted to take him home so badly because I knew there was a strong possiblity that he wouldn't make it out of there. sad

I adopted a black furred cat in 2012. Male. He protects the house from other cat's(walks around the house/garden) then comes in and wants his pay ie food and to stretch out on my lap while I scratch him.

He's a ball of energy still. And a talker. Real polite. Will come to the door of my bedroom and lightly meow for me to get up and feed him.

he doesn't kill anything, but he likes chasing bugs and playing in the dirt, especially when I digging in the garden. He's good for a short drive around the neighborhood too.

That's just a lot of misinformation. Dogs can be 'snobbish' too
But all that is in an animals natural behaviour being expressed in a human environment.

Male cat's in particular are more affectionate than the females. But in general a cat like any other animal will bond with it's owner. Too many people think 'cat's are indipendant' and just leave them alone in the house instead of connecting with them.
Too quiet? lol that is what I like, all you have to do is put a collar with a bell around their necks.

My neighbor has 5 cats and they are good for rat kills on the hill behind our
houses and also hold snakes at bay. My neighbor has a trap door for her cats and
they have occasionally brought mice and baby snakes in. disbelief
I don't mind cats but ain't no way in hell they are sharing the same space in
a house with me. They are outdoor pets as far as I'm concerned.

And they don't maul people and eat babies and other people's pets and I've never seen anyone get sued for thousands of dollars over a cat attack. And you don't have to put a cat on your homeowner's insurance to cover in case of an attack. I like dogs, I grew up with one. But there are a lot of breeds that I would not have in my home and I don't want to be around, pits in particular. Too unpredictable. Shih tzus are more my speed. lol

I wouldn't mind having a small dog but cleaning up after them is the pits. The only reason why I've stayed away from getting one is the cleaning and maintenance. Cats are so much easier to take care of. And one of the things I love most about cats is they aren't people pleaser. They don't just take you at face value. You have to prove yourself to them and earn their respect. Just like me! biggrin
